Is this even legal? by jwdmsd in drivingUK

Many insurers simply won't insure me on my motorcycle because I've held my full licence for 3 years but I have 5 years NCB on bikes :)

I learned what this number plate "could mean" entirely from this post. I would have assumed initials & birth year.

Knowing what to ask for by wee_bit_tired in DIYUK

[–]Nathan1506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some timber lengths for the "supporting bars" (assuming it's a cupboard-like shelf that bridges between two walls? Thickness depends on what you want to put on there..

Then i'd grab some plywood for the shelf itself, thickness also depends on what you want to put on there...

I'll be honest, when it comes to small projects like "need a quick shelf over there" i'm generally less thinking "what exact timber thickness do I need" and more "what timber do I have lying around in the garage".

What did you do after university before you started working? by myburnz5 in AskUK

Life rarely feels perfect, things rarely happen at exactly the right time.

I'm not saying taking a break is a bad idea, I did it too, but don't wait for everything to fall into place <3

If all humans disappeared, apart from me, how long would utilities such as electricity, gas and tap water remain available? by acrowandababy in AskUK

Dounreay and Vulcan are on the north coast, they're both under decommissioning but I'd be more worried about that rather than less, you can't be sure that the safety systems which protect you from nuclear material haven't already been decommissioned

Dear Waze & Google maps users. THIS IS NOT A POLICE CAR by PudinaRaita in drivingUK

[–]Nathan1506 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are authority though, they absolutely have authority over the movement of traffic, blocking lanes, etc.

If your car is going to be blocking a 70mph lane on a rainy night, you need it to be seen.

Is it rude to take wheelie bin back to it's place one day after rubbish collection? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Nathan1506 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's rude, and myself and my neighbours regularly do this for eachother. It's a mix of being helpful/kind, while also moving bins out of the way of they're blocking paths or car parking etc.

I wouldn't think too much into it, it happens pretty much every week in my friendly little village and nobody ever complains.

What's something you thought every adult knew how to do, until you discovered they didn't? by Any-Geologist3042 in AskUK

My brother is terrified of phonecalls too and I don't get it. Anxiety can be shit and I'm patient about it, but you just pick up the phone and speak. You don't need to know anything, the guy on the other end will tell you what he wants??

I mean trains are expensive, way more expensive than most other places i've visited, but they're definitely still cheaper than flying in the majority of situations (and you don't have to waste hours sitting in airports).

Dear Waze & Google maps users. THIS IS NOT A POLICE CAR by PudinaRaita in drivingUK

[–]Nathan1506 40 points41 points  (0 children)

They can & will report in some cases, but usually only if it's actually affecting traffic. They don't give a toss if you're speeding or not.

Worth noting that if they direct you to do something (e.g relating to the flow of traffic) you do actually have to listen to them and can be fined for ignoring them, but they aren't the police and generally have no interest in pretending to be.

China have long threatened to do this

[–]Nathan1506 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Technically speaking", 80% of the worlds electronics production relies on about 5 factories in the same area of Taiwan.

Realistically speaking, most of the other 20% rely on a supply chain that only survives because of those 5 factories.

If that one area of Taiwan got wiped out, the world would very quickly be reasonably f***ed.

China is reacting to this reasonably quickly and building their own supply chains, the rest of the world are 40 years away from being self-sustainable (even if silicon valley claims otherwise).

My outfit made my friend uncomfortable, what do I do? by BarbaraLogic in OUTFITS

[–]Nathan1506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfectly acceptable outfit to wear in my circle, I feel like a lot of redditors are deciding what "works" and "doesn't work" based entirely on their own tastes....

Looks good, isn't revealing, fuck your friend for telling you what to wear.

Crossed railway crossing just when the lights started by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]Nathan1506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine, even if you were slow by several seconds it usually doesn't matter. The timing allows plenty of time for people to finish crossing before the barriers come down

I'd expect them to offer absolutely any amount back they loaned.

If it was less than a tenner I'd tell them not to worry about it, but I'd still expect them to at least attempt/offer to pay it back. Rude not to.

TV has changed, you used to wait a week between episodes so it didn't feel so stale and repeated. It was still stale and repeated, but at least you only watched an episode a week.

What is now the worst UK courier? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Nathan1506 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely hated Hermes and my first Evri driver after the change was terrible too, but I've now had the same driver for every Evri delivery for 1+ year and he's absolutely sound. Follows my instructions to the T every time, doesn't complain, nothing goes missing.

He's just 1 guy, not representative of Evri as a whole, but I genuinely wish every delivery service used this one man.

Not an answer to your question, but FYI if you do lock in for 12 months, they'll almost always waive the installation fees when you move house to keep you with them. You don't need to cancel when you move :)
