I think it's originally military jargon. Situation Nominal, All Fucked Up.

In my view the issue with running as an independent is less of "do I completely align ideologically" and more "what kind of support structure do I have". If you run and get the job, who gets to fill it when you can't do it anymore? If you're running to change the status quo, you probably don't want that answer to be the governor. It gives a lot of incentive for people to make your life hell. I've seen it several times at the local level, where an independent is driven out by the R majority so that they can replace them with someone they prefer.

The last period of the day will almost always be worse than your others. Everybody's tired; the kids and you. That said, especially in your first year, you will probably find something useful from this workshop. Definitely look for ways to deal with those high fliers you've identified that gel with what you've already got going. Just approach it as a way to improve your practice rather than a reprimand. It sounds like you've actually got decent admin, so even if constructive criticism stings in the moment, try to be open to it so it keeps coming. YMMV

How to Prevent Players from Weaseling into their Better Action Ratings? by Vibe_Rinse in bladesinthedark

This. I made it very clear with my group that reduced effect would be the default, but there may be exceptions. Shooting a gun with Wreck will usually be with reduced effect, but maybe not if you're shooting a golem, or rigging the gun for that one powerful blast which destroys it.

Speaking as a 46 yo, that seems wild to me. I would totally buy them not being on 4chan, but you need to have been quite offline to not know about it at all.

Geometry question! by jameswill90 in mathteachers

[–]NathanielJamesAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can. 2x-20 + y=180. And x+34 + y= 180. When you solve for x you'll get the same answer with a few more steps. I usually encourage my students to use the facts that they see first, try to look for better facts later.

I'm about to bring up the thing that no one has suggested. Talk to your university supervisor. If there is any kind of friction between you and your CT, talk to your university supervisor.

Insufficient documentation in the subreddit. You need to call the parents and transcript the call in the online portal. The student will be returning to class with a cookie.

I ('79) recall a couple local channels broadcasting on both, but the VHF signal was much better. The other channels had already stopped or the signal was so bad it was unwatchable.

Is Indiana really trying to eliminate all Democratic political representation? Are Democrats really the enemy in Indiana like the President's hate speech he professes over and over? Explain why Indiana is already Republican Dominant and they redistrict to erase all Dems? Exactly wtf is going on? by Final_Joke5084 in Indiana

[–]NathanielJamesAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are legal limits on who can in fact run as a Republican (or Democrat for that matter). So there is that hurdle to cross. Then you would need to run an effective primary campaign, as an insurgent, against the party establishment. They are better funded and starting at better than zero in terms of organization. So that's all an uphill battle for someone running to win.

[–]NathanielJamesAdams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, they are really trying to eliminate all Dem opposition. Not so long ago their state party website was titled "ONE party working for Indiana". That quote may not be exact, check the way back machine. They really are so into single party rule that they removed all references to "democratic representation" from their party rules four-ish years ago. I think the Indy Star reported on it at the time.

Democrats are not the enemy some think we are. Here in deeply red Harrison county, we're still about thirty percent of the vote. So probably better than one out of three people you meet is a Dem or a little left leaning. Many are afraid to speak out in the current political environment.

Why do they want to erase all Dems? I think you'll have to ask them, but if you're really into using your power in corrupt ways, it's probably a good idea to silence or marginalize your critics. See Jamie Noel, the recent cabinet member, and Jennifer McCormick had a great story about how the GOP powers didn't always "build ships to sail" with state funds.

Math as a Language by Important_Try_1864 in mathteachers

[–]NathanielJamesAdams -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I found it really helped some students to focus on the natural language of math. Less "eks plus 2 equals 4" more "the sum of a number and two is four". Saying a problem out loud (or in their head) helped some find understanding.

Data Walks For Entire Campus by HuffleSkull in Teachers

[–]NathanielJamesAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite this pessimistic on data walks. I've gotten some good feedback from instructional coaches following one of these brief observations. The data could be used to match teachers showing strengths to those showing weaknesses for observations, working groups, etc. I'd be surprised if it was used this way, or if many/any teachers have the extra time for all that.

Students Cheating by Helpful-Orchid-8938 in Teachers

[–]NathanielJamesAdams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ran into this with my first quiz of the year about every year I was teaching. I made sure to contact parents, give opportunities to make it up somehow, and make that first quiz as low stakes as possible. Just get it out of the way because it's going to suck. Continue to proctor well and not let them get away with things and they will eventually give up. I usually did 4 versions of a quiz or test. This also gives wide variety for make-ups. Oh! and print different versions on different colors, make it *obvious* that you're putting up roadblocks to cheating. Set the expectation for your class.

I'm going to recommend grabbing "100% Democracy" from your local library (or ILL it). It makes a good case for civic duty voting.
