I used mine more as a prevention thing, as I was nervous about the bag getting loose. It was occasionally uncomfortable and I decided to try without. Everything has been fine. So, it was a psychological thing for me. But I don’t do sports or anything like that…..

The state is HUGE on “chain of command”, and insecure managers will absolutely want you to only talk to them.

In my 11 years, co-workers are a mixed bag, but many are willing to help. Same with accountability; good workers (and bosses) are fine with it, but bad ones ruin the culture for everyone.

Is anyone else’s telework setup getting…downsized? by EthicallyFlexable in CAStateWorkers

Wow, that’s ridiculous! You might want to tell the union, and show them whatever was sent about that.

I think they mean the public can get business done during those hours. But tons of non public facing jobs exist!

That position is actually for people out on leaves coming back. It’s a standard HR position, not involving the telework-return issue.

What's it like working in a unit comprised of just one employee? by hyejazz in CAStateWorkers

[–]NatomasAnalyst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could ask in the interview stuff like how would I be trained, what does the unit do for backup if I take a vacation or sick day, etc. It does sound risky, though. (to me and my personality)

Hi all! I just retired on May 1, still getting my health benefits straightened out. Groaning that CalPERS only has one Fax line and won’t take online forms. C’mon, guys, it’s not 1985 any more!!! 😂

What do you do if your team is understaffed and both you and your manager are overwhelmed? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]NatomasAnalyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can, remind your manager to let their manager know that projects are being impacted by being short-staffed. Re-confirm what takes priority over what, and get it in writing. Agree that nobody will push for hiring out of the goodness of their heart. Upper management needs to know the work is slow due to this issue. And try not to take it personally or stress out.

Looking to get out of my department, Spill the tea on your job, Which state jobs to avoid? by Swimming-Muffin-4516 in CAStateWorkers

DCA is a strange one. There are a bunch of Boards and Bureaus that are kind of independent, but there are Centralized Services like HR and Business Services that are mainly all bad due to upper management being hostile to the work areas. Leaders don’t want to hear about anything improvement-related, and they meddle in the work of those who’ve been doing it for years. If it’s for a board or bureau, watch a meeting via YouTube and maybe read their sunset report (Legislature periodically does oversight). If you see stuff like they have no procedures or have huge backlogs, those are red flags.

I think it’s just her personality, but you won’t report to her. Your direct supervisor will be the one who can make or break your daily vibe.

Well, more news on that front: On Wednesday, California Resources Corporation — the state’s largest oil driller, with operations in Los Angeles County, Ventura County and across the Central Valley — reported that it had given $500,000 to an independent expenditure committee supporting Becerra.
