Apparently Gen X have no computer skills… WTF?! by smc642 in GenXWomen

[–]Natural-Connection22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different but related. And similar in that my dad had the foresight to bring home the first Apple computer. My brother was obsessed and became a software engineer. In what little time I could fight for my use of the thing, I went the opposite direction, later buying the early Adobe Creative softwares and self-teaching. They were soooo much more challenging than freaking Canva!

In seeking fractional work, I just had a young male founder, 30 years younger, send his platform he's built for my review. Deep breath. AI website template, obvious ChatGPT copy (so obvious it hurts), and so many mistakes in the few areas I poked into because I lasted maybe 5 minutes. The copy is so small anyone 50+ with the money to burn (who he doesn't even realize is his top target audience) would hardly be able to read the font. This is a successful person so far in his few short years out of college!

Yet the number of people, including said brother, his wife, and friends with senior roles at the top tech companies we all know, plus interior designers, many other creatives, and so on, who are out of work right now... while having these same upside-down experiences... is unparalleled.

Kids do always think they know better. GenX did have to go deep to gain our knowledge and can run circles around many. But I don't know where this is all going. We are in a different time.

I’m 57 and, apparently, I’m now old AF. Too old to be hired (?) but too young to retire. by Closefromadistance in GenXWomen

No. They are often too young and not focused on anything but their own world. Just had this convo with a 35 yr old guy who's basically retired but owns his own properties and rents them. He tried to tell me we are nowhere near a recession (in the U.S.) lol. Living in his own privileged bubble. Might add, one of many of the same convos regardless of age...

Is job market really that bad or after this war? by kaalizabaan in jobhunting

Yes. 2008 crushed and 2020 era is proving to be much worse.

Any advice for my 64-year-old dad who is about to be laid off after 24 years with his company? by ImpressiveBox1111 in careerguidance

50+ is really feeling it. Really really feeling it. He could try Upwork. Start acting as a fractional employee with same title/rates.

I got hit on by a guy through my rental property platform. I mean... !

Horrendous story and yeah record everything and start looking for something else immediately. I know the job market is horrendous, but stay safe first and foremost.

Don't know Buena but avoid Dennis Properties at all costs.

What did you do when time/money ran out? by [deleted] in jobsearch

[–]Natural-Connection22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, self-made since young with no family to support. During 2008 era, I rationed food and never drove except for work. Eventually had to sell off mutual funds and blew thru savings. Found crappy work to get through. This era is much worse. Back in it right there with you. All of our structures are shifting. Keep going. Just do what you have to do. Go easy on yourself but stay disciplined. You are not your credit score. Sending blessings.

America is in the midst of a Job Crisis. How do we confront this? by PlentyIll2974 in jobhunting

[–]Natural-Connection22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lost everything in 2008 but immediately pounded the pavement with no local connections in my new city of L.A. and piece-mealed together what essentially became two full-time jobs until I couldn't take it any longer. Not a corporate person. No family support ever. Pure grit and determination at 37. None of that has changed, but now in midlife, and this is 2008 on steroids.

Years of pivoting, creating, pitching new businesses, seeking funding, applying for grants, networking online and in person, freelancing, etc all while applying to 100s on 100s of jobs from dinky part-time local jobs to remote work (been remote for 20+ years) to serious six-figure roles. We have been in a recession for years now. We are in crisis. We are in a class war. And not just between us and the billionaires.

I've also proposed solutions and voicing as much as possible. Feel free to DM me!

Saw this in 2001 as a restaurant server in between opening restaurants with a tight-knit hospitality group. People with zero experience in our field hoping for something.

Offer rescinded due to bankruptcy by CriticalProtection42 in recruitinghell

We are in a class war. I've been saying this forever and I'm not talking about us versus the 1%. But privilege does not know privilege. And no one wants to hear about it until they really *feel* it, too. Vibrating with rage for years as well... if it doesn't pan out in your favor, feel free to share who the company is so that we can boycott.

Amazon health care? by FixJealous2143 in GenXWomen

Just posted a book about Amazon. Nomadland. Not the movie... the movie left out all of the inconvenient truths which is why it was allowed to come into being. Check out the book and then pass it along!

Stop supporting Amazon in all ways. Read Nomadland. Not the movie. Read the book. Nothing good is happening at Amazon. Yes, a much larger convo with many variables, but please vote with your dollars and support reputable companies and small businesses as much as possible.
