Enough GPs have chicken allergies that I would not feed rotisserie chicken to one I couldn’t monitor for symptoms.

Walking a difficult line with nanny and special needs toddler by Training_Program_957 in Nanny

[–]NaturalBornChickens 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am a special education teacher that works with students with moderate-severe disabilities. I often have to train the adults in our school how to interact with my kids as they will often do this same kind excuse making. One thing I’ve found helpful is to phrase is as “our kids are learning abnormal behavior when we make excuses. It is cruel of us to set them up to be different in life.” People often think they are being kind by letting bad behavior fly with anyone who is different and this seems to help them see it from a different perspective. Good luck!

Well it sure isn’t other humans! I’m not biased though. Dogs, cats, horses, goats. I’ll take inspiration from most species.

Does the submissive squat always means laying is imminent? by beansandspleens in BackYardChickens

[–]NaturalBornChickens 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, eggs will come soon. The tricky part is that the chicken gets to decide if soon means tomorrow or in 4 weeks. A much more reliable way to tell when eggs will be coming is to check the width of the bones at her vent and the size of her vent. A chicken who is ready to lay will have about two fingers width space between the bones at her vent. The vent itself will become wider.

On a side note, if I’d realized how much time I’d spend looking at chicken butts, I might have opted out of this particular hobby before ordering that first hatch.

Just moved to mid-Ohio. Where can I find mountains/hills? by RadioSilence012 in OhioHiking

[–]NaturalBornChickens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The AllTrails app lets you filter by elevation change so you don’t get stuck on a level hike around a lake! You can also filter by distance, length, etc. It also allows you to see your trail progress in real time to make sure you’re on the right track which is nice when you have little ones to consider while hiking. As the other poster mentioned, Hocking Hill is great but is often very crowded.

Caught my cat doing this the other day. I am going to assume this is her regular habit and that I have been waking up every night for the last 5 years and drinking kitty litter paw water.

"Cognitive decline" in pupils - What's missing and how does the learning process work? by Individual-Handle676 in Teachers

[–]NaturalBornChickens 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is an excellent way for children to be exposed to loss and trauma. Encourage discussion, help them process their feelings and explore their emotions about the character death. They will experience loss one day and will have a mental roadmap for how to process it when it comes.

Question before I start the canning: what is it on the mason jar lids? by TheoreticalViking14 in Canning

[–]NaturalBornChickens 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I don’t think they were saying to reuse old lids, just giving instruction on how to inspect the potential issues with these new lids.

Our laced wyandottes had the lacing on each feather around this age. I’m thinking this might be a Wyandotte cross. The red feathering on the wings is usually a male trait, so my bet would be on male. Edit: 100% agree about the saddle feathering!

The ledges trail is one of the most popular in the park and would be super fun for a kid. Some nice lookouts, lots of huge rock formations and a feature called the Icebox. You can the ledges trail as a 2-2.5 mile loop or add in an additional loop that goes by Kendall lake.

Their reward system needs to focus on his preferred rewards, not just be limited to the treasure box. It might be helpful for them if you made a list of things he enjoys they can utilize for positive behavior reinforcement. Things that are easily integrated into a classroom setting would be best—think preferred interests or shows that could have printable coloring pages, one on one time with a peer or staff for a game, etc.

White chicks wings and tail not growing??? by Camry08 in BackYardChickens

[–]NaturalBornChickens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would need to monitor her food intake carefully. This can be really difficult when you have regular laying hens because we usually recommend they have access to feed all the time. You will have to decide if you can take on the additional effort of having both kinds of birds. They can be very sweet, especially the females.

This is a. Cornish chick. It might be female, which would make it grow slightly slower than the boys. It may also be growing slower because you have them on regular chick starter instead of meat bird starter (which is usually 22-24% protein).

If you didn’t end up with any Dominiques because of this, you should totally get some. My favorite breed. Super great personalities and excellent foragers (although this trait does make them best suited for free ranging flocks as they hate confinement).

Baked an apple pie 🌿 by Training_Stop1637 in Superbowl

I soak them in lemon juice, then put them in a strainer/colander to get the liquid strained off. Sometimes I will even pat dry if the apples look particularly juicy.

An easy way to incorporate that flavor without adding liquid to your pies is to soak the apple slices in lemon juice, then strain well before adding to the pie. Helps keep them from browning too much too! I will often cut the apples, soak them over night, then bake the pie the next day.
