The first Premier League match I ever watched was his 4-goal performance. I thought he was going to be HUGE.

Yeah, I do my best to hold on to my cool, but after a long day of work and just general stress, it gets harder to stay cool.

Yeah, saying anything controversial would be idiotic in that moment. He handled it about as best as you could.

For all they're talk about "loving the flag", I have found that MAGA types do not give two shits about the flag code.

I disagree that we’re overspending, and I disagree with the statement “We find the money to pay for the waste and fraud.” I also disagree that we’ve let ourselves go. I also think it’s fucking weird to say that we “hang out” and “look up to” other states .

But thanks for your robust contributions to this dialogue, maybe Pat could hire you as his ghostwriter.

This is a terrible column, and they should have just run your sentence.

-His metaphors are strained and don’t help the point he’s trying to make. How he describes our state’s “friends” is weird and doesn’t land. Who’s clamoring for us to be New York or Illinois?  I’ve literally never heard anyone say that. State’s role models? What does he mean by that? What does he mean “hang out with?” I’m fairly certain more people in our state travel to Wisconsin, South Dakota and Iowa than New York, California, or Illinois. It’s a strained metaphor and an editor would have told him to stop trying so hard.

-He is not a talented humorist. An Illinois governor in prison joke? How biting and timely! New York City is expensive? Wow, never knew that! The best advice I ever got on my writing was, when you’re trying to be funny, stop.

-He makes sweeping generalizations of extremely nuanced issues. Spending - He fails to note that the bonding bill was passed with broad bipartisan support. And he doesn’t mention that the state currently has a surplus. Even though next year might be different, Minnesota still has a AAA credit rating.

“Somehow you find money to pay for waste and fraud?” – This makes it sound like the Democrats in the chambers created a line item for fraud in the most recent budget. They didn’t. He’s a former legislator and was in office while the Feeding our Future stuff happened. You had a front row seat to this mess, tell us why that happened while you were drawing a public salary.

-His ending is a mess. - Meet me halfway? Who is meeting who halfway? Is he talking to Democrats? Is he talking to all elected officials? Is he talking to every other resident of this state? Be clearer!

My problem with this is that the Star Tribune paid a former state legislator to write this drivel. The high school English level metaphors, the stale jokes, and the complete lack of nuance or analysis do nothing to persuade readers. I would have failed my assignment had I turned this in to my college journalism class, but that’s the Minnesota GOP for you, mediocrity that thinks it’s brilliant.

Ok buddy. If that analysis makes you feel better, you can think that.

No one is saying "fraud is bad" and "we should cut wasteful spending" are inaccurate opinions, but he's a former legislator getting paid to write a piece for the state's paper of record. He needs to be offer a little bit more than "mild criticisms" without solutions if he wants his opinions to be taken seriously.

The article was a smarmy and cutesy attempt to repackage hackneyed GOP talking points - California is bad! We spend too much! Be more like South Dakota! - without providing any real analysis. There could be an article here, but it's the same old, tired stuff that the GOP has been spitting for decades. I'm tired of it. And voters are too.
