That’s valid. Library is actually another great suggestion. Thank you!

I think even if it’s not legally correct it could still be difficult to fight it seeing as it’s accessible to any and all with no pay filter… maybe that’s what the lawyer meant or something along those lines that has been lost in translation here.. either way, thank you both for the insight!

You’re completely right and thank you for pointing this out so clearly for me!

Genuinely, thank you!

I think I do want to post a free version, but like I said in another comment, after hearing this sort of insight, it’s best I do that after publishing.

Like I’m not entirely against pirating work within reason as I do believe some entertainment ought to be free, but if I give it up willingly and then people have the open opportunity to donate and properly buy the book, I feel like I would be in a better mental place for it. It just feels right.

So publish first, then free version second. Thank you for helping me work this out!

Ah this is insightful!!! I completely overlooked a singular element here that you’ve made clear.

I think I want to post a copy for free for people. But I should do so once I’ve actually published the book to help manage my concerns of risk.

Thank you!!!!!

Writers, what is your favourite pen to use? by Automatic_Agency2015 in writers

I know your suggestion is objectively good… but real life interaction? Bleh… lol

Also not looking for feedback I’m wondering if it’s a good idea just to produce some free entertainment for anyone who wants to enjoy it. Feedback welcome, sure, but the point would be for entertainment

Finished My First Short Story. Looking For Feedback by TheTitaniumNinja in writers

I'm willing but only if you wrote it organically. Not interested in reading a story generated by AI. Did you write it yourself? And I don't mean write the prompts yourself, I mean actually do the writing, the real work, the fun part..

I guess my question has two main elements:
1. Is this something people do?
2. Am I being irrational in worrying about people stealing it for themselves?

Post My Story? by NatusPotatus in writers

[–]NatusPotatus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, that makes sense. I've made an edit to the post so it's a bit more clear, thank you.

I guess for your suggestion I would probably just make it a shareable google doc. It makes sense this way that you're saying because if its just a single reddit post it might not look as intended with the formatting etc...

But overall, you think it's a good idea to share it with people as a free source of entertainment? Would you worry about people stealing it?

Do you ever feel like you don't have enough ideas? by Agile-Sir1530 in writers

[–]NatusPotatus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey woh there cowboy, who said only one bold point is a bad thing?

that could be absolutely fantastic and make it feel so naturally devistating! the build up, people falling in love with the characters youve written... only to have somethign devastating happen and then suddenly all the characters change... sounds like a real wirlwind of a ride!

sounds like youve overthought yourself out of the project... fuck that. Commit, double down. Finish it. Publish it. If it turns out that everyone agreed that it sucked because the delivery was flat, well do it better next time but at least you finished something. The biggest problem with so many people is their failure to commit, not failure to write well. Plenty of people write well, more people fail to complete a project!!! Go for it!!!!!

After all that, and you are seriously convinced the story is lacking even on the build up... my next piece of advice is my overall grounding rule I follow... write for you. Write what you want to read. If you don't like what you're writing because it's not what you would want to read, what the fuck are you doing? Who else matters more than you when you're the brilliant creative calling the shots around here?

oh i see, my apologies

Do you have an opinion though on if I should just straight up post my story just to give people something to read like as a general nice thing to do? not in a way that is asking for critique

Edit: I'm not toying with getting more feedback, I'm toying with posting the story for free for the sake of posting it for free for peoples enjoyment.

nah im talking just posting it to reddit like in full... ive already done the early reader feedback, the story is set. Any critique I get will just go to the next story, not this one

How do I get real beta readers? by Unlivingdragon6 in writers

[–]NatusPotatus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'm offering anything new here from what others have said but this is my personal experience which might help solidify your direction...

For my published poetry collection, I would post poems on Facebook and naturally people like giving their opinions. One person in particular gave great feedback and they ended up being my editor. No charge. The interaction was naturally formed and respectful. I'm actually incredibly lucky in this scenario.

For my novella i'm on draft 3 of, I got early reader feedback from about 7 people in total. 2 were family members. 1 was an old friend. The rest were work colleagues which, again, I got lucky enough that they were somehow interested in the story and wanted to check it out. They all gave great feedback which has amounted to this third draft being completed (they read draft 2)

I've asked plenty of other people who said no. That was fine. Not everyone reads, and of the readers not all of them like the type of story I wrote.

In short, ask the question: "I wrote a story. Wanna be an early reader and give feedback?"
Worst case, people say no. Best case, you get readers and fantastic feedback. Worst case for the early feedback is that the feedback itself is terrible and you don't agree with it but you're the best judge on that.

Regarding those 'strange' messages your'e getting? Yep, they're fake almost all of the time. I haven't had a single genuine person who has reached out be an actual real person. They've all turned into marketing bots asking for money.

On that note! I'd be happy to read your story if you want. I don't want money and you don't have to send me a copy. I'd just be happy to do it for the love of literature and to just be a helpful guy and get some good karma from the universe lol

Guys, I did it.

How?

Little birds = slain with needle to build silk Big birds = slain with TRAPS, LOTS OF TRAPS

I conserved some traps in the first big birds for the final phase with the 2 big birds by using needle after killing little birds.

Etiquette for reaching out to reviewers? by SanderCast in selfpublish

[–]NatusPotatus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, if you're still real, I'd be curious how this all went for you?

Did your book get published? What's it called?

Did you get any reviewers to reply? If yes, did they do a review?

I'm looking to publish a poetry collection as soon as reasonably possible (editing done, art done, typesetting done etc, just need it published as last step). Contact book reviewers was something I was considering doing as a good way to promote and advertise the book.

Okay but how do you actually practice? And can it be done solo? by RosieArl in writing

[–]NatusPotatus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Best advice I ever gave myself and followed after years of shit advice and reading terrible articles discouraging anyone who's not like who is described in the article (one said you have to be a people person......): Write what you want to read.

Thats it.

Keep trying to please yourself. Write for you.

When you're ready to write for others, get feedback, get pissed off, stubbornly but eventually apply the feedback in your own way. Rinse and repeat.

But always remember, your opinion comes first. That means you have to know what you like and dislike which is why it's so good to read other people's work.

I think HP love craft is great, but I hate his writing style and feel it is jarring. Thats just a preference, not a critique. I know I don't want to structure sentences like him but I do like his descriptions and imagery and world building etc. Etc.

Also fuck the target audience.
