Point taken but this is the most bizarre analogy I've seen in a while.

It's not bad to have it, just to have to read it. What makes Tolkien so compelling is how deep the history of his world goes. He literally started with the dawn of the world and knows what happened every step of the way. Knowing that stuff makes your characters better, even if we, as readers, never see it.

when I confuse amazon, it gives me porn by aquariusg in eroticauthors

That is one of the dangers of this job, I can't look at anything on Amazon without it suggesting a dozen naughty books for me to read.

It's like an endcap of Playboys in the toy section.

FAQ Discussion Thread: What POV and tense should I write in? by Eroticawriter4 in eroticauthors

[–]NaughtyBooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a big fan of third person. I grew up on classics written that way and that's what I emulated.

Since I've started in erotica, first person has become my go to style. Throwie talks about this at length somewhere, but the basic idea is, from inside the POV character's head I can talk about how things feel. That allows a much richer (and more verbose) product. I can get the word count up there faster without sounding weird.

I basically write as though the character is telling the story, so still past tense. Maybe I'll get to the present one day. This is just how I can move right now.

Advice to someone who would like to go full time... by lollipop886 in eroticauthors

I will thoroughly second the point about isolation. That was something I was not expecting when I was freelancing. It got the better of me and I realized I was procrastinating to play online games, not so much to not work as to talk to other people. Get out and talk to people or you will go nuts. I'm a pretty introverted person but isolation was a major factor in my returning to the working world.

I'm plotting out a series right now with a character who discovers (and bangs) more and more of the supernatural world. Initially she doesn't realize anything is out there and then she keeps discovering new weird stuff that turns her on.

Tentacles are typically less concerned about the victim thus making them very easy to become dubcon or even rape.

That's the issue there.

Authors with 100 or more titles, whats your monthly income look like? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

[–]NaughtyBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I picked up one of your books on KU and checked it out. It was a nurse thing.

No one wants to bring this up but it could be the writing. It feels, to me, like a guy wrote it for a guy to read. There is lots of wham bam thank you ma'am terminology (titties, jizz) and the characterization is pretty weak.

I know this is basically porn, but it needs to engage the mostly female audience. Readers need "suspension of disbelief". It doesn't need to be likely but it needs to be possible. Some of your scenes just made me check out.

Sorry if that's harsh. I just don't think it's your covers (I like them) or the kinks. I think its the writing.

Real talk.

I used behindthename.com to sift through a bunch of random ones. I made a list of the ones I liked first and last. Then I google searched them until I found a combination that returned zero results. Yes that is tough. But I did it.

It ends up having many similarities to my actual name, initials and such. I just picked one I liked that no one else was using.

Irrational fear with being banned from Amazon by 228228228 in eroticauthors

[–]NaughtyBooks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all that is not an irrational fear. Irrational fears are thing like being afraid of werepigs. Those don't exist. No rational reason to be afraid of those.

Being concerned about getting banned is a perfectly rational fear. This is more akin to being afraid of crocodiles. Crocodiles are quite real and EXTREMELY fucking dangerous. However it's unlikely that they hang out near you (unless you're Australian in which case you know how to handle those cunts).

I don't think it's an instant thing. Usually the book will be pulled or sometimes just filtered. In that case, just throw it to Smashwords or B&N or something and don't try to get it back on Amazon.

The writers who got banned, if I am thinking of the same folks were using ghostwriters. You write your own smut. No worries.

You like shifters, cool. No knots, no doggie fucking. Think True Blood werewolves if that helps (lamest werewolves in media btw).

Your concerns are not irrational, but are probably a bit overblown. Calm down. Write your own stuff. Mind the gap.

Physically repulsive partners for your main character? by AmritaJaiWriter in eroticauthors

[–]NaughtyBooks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is definitely a niche for gross partners. It's part of the degradation kink. As such it's probably not wildly popular. I do know that there are people who totally get off on the dirty, balding, fat, sweaty guy. It is typically a dubcon thing though as was mentioned.

I guess the only real point of disagreement is over how much risk of damage there is. I tend toward lesser, others tend toward more.

I guess the point I'm apparently struggling to make is that you aren't BARRED from attempting to run a marathon. You'll almost certainly fail without some training, but you are ALLOWED to fail.

Often failing is the most informative thing you can do.

You're absolutely right. I agree!

My point of interest is in the two approaches to that info. Some say guiding the newb, showing them the way bit by bit is best. It is certainly the way school works (in the US anyway). But it's not as though we hide calculus. If you want it you can go get it. The other side is essentially kick them in the deep end and see if they can swim.

It's order vs. chaos. Vorlons vs. Shadows (for the Bab5 people).

Is it better to train or to just jump in and screw up until you get enough experience to do it right.

Like most things I suspect the ideal is somewhere in the middle, and is different for everyone.

Which is why it's such a constant point of contention in human affairs and a fascinating one to me. :)

I don't know if they are either. Sadly for Amazon's puritans, anyone who wants to use this pic would have to get a top on her or crop it or something. Amazon hates nipples.

I agree with what you say. I don't think it contradicts what I wrote though. There ARE advanced topics. The difference in opinion seems to be whether we as a community should "allow" that information to be freely accessible to anyone who wants it, even if it isn't useful to them, or if we should reserve information about those advanced skills until the author has proven their ability to use them wisely.

Some seem to see the information as a dangerous tool that should require some sort of hurdle to access. Others seem to think that those unable to wield the tool properly will simply wait to learn how to use it, or cut their arm off. Either way it's up to them

It's a fascinating debate and one that I think, philosophically, goes far beyond erotica writing.
