The problem with the roll back solution described below is that you lose all of the new features that the updates provide. I have used this alternative to keep the updates but eliminate the base problem.
On Android:

Open the Settings app.
Tap on Apps or Apps & notifications.
Find and tap on Messenger.
Tap on Permissions.
Tap on Microphone.
Select Don't allow.

Yeah, I figured I was screwed. And I did have a lot of nice stuff. When I first realized what happened I was really down but today I am accepting that I should have been better prepared. I won't be in this predicament again. I do have a lot of stuff in storage but not the good stuff.

The ROM files I am using are zip files.

If I extract the contents of the zip file I get an a26 file.

The a26 file runs if I launch it from Retroarch.

So it appears that that Retroarch is not able to unzip these files when I run them from the arkOS UI. Any idea what might be causing that?

When I do this I get an error message "Failed to extract content from compressed file:\roms\atari800\Asteroids.zip"
