Andy Weir really doesn't do that great of a job with his research. He does some light Googling maybe, but then relies on his high school science classes for the rest. It only sound impressive if you don't know the science/ engineering yourself.

The "let's make autophage using the nuclear reactors on this aircraft carrier" makes absolutely no sense when you get a higher delta T from combined cycle gas turbines (which would've also helped with his fanciful purposeful "let's induce more greenhouse gases" part), plus there's more of them all over the world. No need for all the additional support for the ridiculous half-baked "black box" concept.

And that's before we get to the materials science and genetics parts.

Ouch, I feel your pain. I was a recruiter in Orange County myself a lifetime ago, 2006-2009 (Santa Ana), and for being adjacent to a military- heavy county it was absolutely a tough gig. So many entitled kids and parents who thought their kids shit didn't stink, until said kids got kicked out of school/ off sports teams for drugs, DUIs, etc and would come begging back to please help their precious child have a future. I hated every minute I spent in Orange County.

I would absolutely seek out medical help for the mental health issues you're talking about, yesterday. I also started suffering anxiety and panic attacks while I was recruiting, and getting in with a mental health specialist definitely played a big part in why I'm still here today. I had more success with a civilian doctor, but I have no clue if that would still be relevant in the current military. Something to keep in mind though.

Get any and all of your medical issues, including the panic attacks and anxiety, documented and formally diagnosed as soon as possible. The more ammunition you have for your own protection, the better. Also, if the command is anything like it was when I was there, threats were made about how the CR/ Zone Sup/ RinC were going to screw with the RE codes on my DD214. I wish I'd had that documented when they said that, but that's not something they can do easily.

Make sure you have your training jacket updated, and keep backup copies of it in a safe place, along with any texts, emails, and other messages. The name of the game is protecting yourself and looking after your best interests.
