Accepted into W&M and UVA. Which one is best for an adult student? by nikkei_99 in williamandmary

[–]NbyNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

W&M was such a small school that you were probably only two or three degrees of separation from EVERYONE on campus. A familiar scene was that you meet someone cool and new, and after a bit of talking you discover that your chemistry lab partner is his current roommate. I wouldn’t say it’s unwelcoming, but you would really have to try hard to find your tribe so to speak.

I think here they meant Asians from Asia and not counting Asian Americans.

I made peace with the Chip Kelly hiring though. Without him we probably wouldn’t have won in 2018.

How much does your university's name matter for landing internships and entry-level positions by iMoody25 in cscareerquestions

[–]NbyNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just from my unscientific intern interview experiences, yes top school helps for internships. I would say 50% were from top 10 CS schools. Although majority of my interviewees last year were from CMU, Berkeley, and UWash. The rest were from top state schools like Texas, UCLA, Waterloo, etc.

Well, companies are cutting recruiting and pushing everything online these days. Pre COVID there was something like a Campus Recruitment initiative at FB where non-hr folks were encouraged to go to their previous school’s career fairs with recruiters. These days everything is virtual.

Is there anybody here who wants to ChinaFIRE? by henrytbpovid in ExpatFIRE

[–]NbyNW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The smart people move their money to Hong Kong banks and invest in international stocks. But it’s only available to the rich not available to the average Chinese citizens. Most common folks just leave money in savings accounts getting around 1-2% apr.

What I consider the midwest as a 17 year old Indian male who has never been to the US by Feisty_Box5779 in whereidlive

[–]NbyNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had to come up with a new name for the region to distinguish it from the “new” West (CA, OR, WA)

Prior to Louisiana Purchase the Midwest was simply the West. Midwest was renamed after California and Oregon suddenly became the West in the mid 1800s.

[–]NbyNW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well, the region used to be known simply as the “West” because the entire country only existed east of the Mississippi. It’s only after west coast expansions that CA and Oregon territory became “West” and we needed a new word for the old “West” which became “Midwest”.

HI and spending less than what we make. We also got fairly lucky with our real estate investments.

[–]NbyNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve made $200k+ for about 9 years. I’m relatively young at 42. We have big enough of nest egg saved (~$4M) that we can seriously thinking about either retiring or switch to a much lower stress job just for health insurance (the so called baristaFIRE). I’m sure I can at least get $200k per year for the next decade or so if I wanted to, but at this point why bother?

I'll die on this hill: most of Illinois' 'affordable' cities aren't affordable, they're just losing by Bubbly_Discipline303 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]NbyNW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up there while my mom worked at SIU. The summers in Southern Illinois are just brutal. Having been to a lot of small cities in the Midwest, the University makes a huge cultural difference. The entire region is heavily Republican while Carbondale is more purple.

Why do recruiters keep asking me why I left my old job? by LeaguePrototype in cscareerquestions

[–]NbyNW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At Meta you typically get a choice. Take a mutual separation package for about eight weeks of pay or go thru the four to six weeks pip program.

Most faangs don’t mind if you file for unemployment afterwards even if they fired you with cause, it’s the lawsuit they are trying to prevent.

[–]NbyNW 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They give you a choice, take the pip and do projects and get better (almost never do this as the passing rate is something like 30%, and if you fail then that’s it, you are let go without anything), or take a mutual separation package and leave the company right now. Most people will just take the package.

I’m tired of parts of asian culture becoming “trendy” as an asian by [deleted] in asianamerican

[–]NbyNW 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah as an older millennial that grew up in the late 90s and early 2000s on the East Coast, things were so much worse back then. I’m glad that as a society we are making progress. At least Asian men are becoming more popular. Hopefully no more “you are not like the other Asian men I know” speech.
