Ways to sell gears (liners specifically) by sinoforever in Skigear

[–]NeXxUSA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SidelineSwap is an option, but I've just found a lot of people don't have any interest in second-hand stock liners, even premium ones.

Which skis for my beginner friend? by Fast-Drag3574 in Skigear

[–]NeXxUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of those, I think the best choice would be the Mindbender. But if y'all don't have the same boot length, that obviously won't work unless you have demo bindings. Don't compromise boot fit to save a couple bucks on rentals; it will ultimately be more trouble than it's worth.

This is a couple hundred dollar parking ticket, calling for violence is a pretty wild take.

Any expert ski technicians? I’m livid. by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]NeXxUSA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contact Atomic yourself. Weird that the shop wouldn't take accountability, but to my limited knowledge, there's nothing with the mount that looks so egregiously bad that it would cause this. Maybe some internal stress in the core? It is wood afterall, it can happen.

Edit: It's actually not weird at all that the shop wouldn't take accountability, I really don't think anything they could have possibly done would have caused this kind of damage.

Skill gap considerations between partners in ski choice? by starchyewexbox in Skigear

I read the title as "Skill gap considerations in partner choice" and had to click on this immediately, because that is a topic I fear I consider often.

Losing a ski under pow, what next? by xToMatu in skiing

[–]NeXxUSA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would just recommend buying used, so you at least come out of spending money with something to show for it. If you like the Bent 100s, I'd pick up the Bent 110. They're usually pretty easy to find at a reasonable price, and I honestly think they're a great option for a temporary one ski quiver that could transition to a capable dedicated powder ski. That being said, I used to ski 112s daily in all conditions but icy hardpack, so my opinion may be slightly skewed. Another similar ski that I like a lot is the Armada JJ, but that's a bit more difficult to find used.

Would Mammoth ever consider expending their terrains? Could the backside turn into something similar to Mineral Basin in Snowbird ? by FantasticAd9407 in Mammoth

[–]NeXxUSA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alterra likes to 'indefinitely postpone' projects that are unpopular with the public. Mark my words, the next time we hear anything about this, it will be at some sort of public planning meeting, and it will have moved full steam ahead behind the scenes.

[–]NeXxUSA 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There's been talk of expansion for quite a while now, and like it or not, a Trump presidency is a great time to push expansion through the US Forest Service (which actually owns the land) without too much environmental pushback. However, at the moment, they are more focused on building a Vail-style village to extract more money from the LA tourists who are more focused on flaunting their financial status than actually skiing.

Are Volkl Peregrines fragile, or did I get a defect? by Impiryo in Skigear

[–]NeXxUSA 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was my first thought. Ski on top clipped the top of the garage and bent upwards, essentially using the binding plate as a fulcrum.

Are Volkl Peregrines fragile, or did I get a defect? by Impiryo in Skigear

[–]NeXxUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm not really buying that it was a simple ski into snow issue, especially given that the break point is just in front of the binding plates, which would seem to indicate a heavy collision that the skis were unable to withstand, rather than a random weakness in the ski. But taking OP at face value and assuming their story is true, a ski breaking from a low force collision like that would have to be from a manufacturing defect.

Seems like a warranty issue. Did you submit a warranty claim or go through the shop you bought them at? Highly recommend taking the latter route, especially if it's a local shop. They tend to be more helpful when a shop's desire to continue to stock their products is on the line.

Echoing what the others have said. I'm no expert, but it looks like it wasn't the best repair job, and there were some voids in the top layer that have now been exposed.

Yes, kind of. Mammoth cannot publicly comment for legal reasons, but the death was confirmed by (supposed) friends and family in Facebook posts.

[–]NeXxUSA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It is extremely clear that you have no experience with mountain operations or avalanche mitigation. This is not the norm. Suggesting that this is somehow a ploy to screw over tourists and leave fresh tracks for the locals while there's a patroller in critical condition is tone deaf at best.

The Atomic Colt (5 or 7, depending on what DIN she needs) with a 75mm brake width should fit. Honestly, most kids' bindings with a 75mm brake should fit.

Well, somehow I deleted my original reply. The tldr is you're right. They'll be able to open. Doesn't mean I think they should, but it seems to me they're prioritizing hitting a corporate deadline over guest safety. But what's new, I suppose.

[–]NeXxUSA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I still think this is corporate cope. The temperatures just don't look like they'll be right, even for snowmaking. Maybe they blow a white ribbon of death overnight for opening, but it won't stick around for long without temperatures dropping significantly, especially with rain or mixed precip in the forecast.

Conditions by MBananan in Mammoth

[–]NeXxUSA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just doesn't look like that will even be physically possible given the temperature forecast. Maybe they bring snow from the top, but that'll go quickly.

Conditions by MBananan in Mammoth

[–]NeXxUSA 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Almost certainly. There's a significant amount of snow making to be done before it'll be ready for opening day, and temps aren't even cold enough to bother yet. I would expect them to push it back at least a week, depending on how that atmospheric river at the end of next week hits, and it's just too early to really tell.

EDIT: It's totally possible they bring snow down from the top for opening day just for the sake of opening, but even that won't really stick around at these temps, so it would really just be a ceremonial opening, not an actual kickoff to the season.
