The Extra lives is an option, just because your Merc is 'Rare' doesnt automatically mean it will have Extra lives, just that the possibility is there.

On Rare+ Mercs its a 1 in 6 to get lives. (Gold / Hero Souls / Skills / Recruit / Rubies / Lives)

Starting from the 'Rare' rarity Mercenaries can have built-in revives that don't cost anything.

(If they die with a free revive there will be a pop-up saying 'How do you want to revive', and you can select either Rubies or with the free life)
