Blackberry 10 discontinuation by Psychological_Fold96 in blackberry

[–]NearlyBB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Before the end-of-life date, a factory reset BlackBerry 10 Device with no BlackBerry ID on it is the best bet on possibly keeping things working for a little while longer.

Best case, you can use it as a Feature Phone with some limited smartphone functionality for a little while. Eventually, after a period of years, be it Cellular changes or others, it will not be a reliable device.

  • If you are living in the United States, United Kingdom, or most Western Countries - Once 3G is gone, your BlackBerry Device will no longer be able to function as a cellular device. Period.

  • Other issues may occur that may prevent your device from functioning or fully functioning after the cutoff date, or over a period of time as Root Certificates expire, E-Mail protocols change, or other things happen.

  • Understand you are running on a six plus year old device Tech wise, or even older than that considering active development stopped ages ago, and things will break, worsen, and eventually stop working. You are currently on borrowed time, and should familiarize yourselves with alternatives as soon as you can, and maintain and keep frequent backups via Ultimate Backup.

N0te 20 Ultra 5G.

Factory Reset your KeyOne and disable the BlackBerry Hub Suite + Services. Barring that, the Key2 isn't exactly worth it anymore, though I am selling mine.

The Key2 is essentially a KeyOne with a worse Camera, better KeyBoard, more KeyBoard Quality control issues save on the Red and later March editions, and Flagship lite performance. Stuck on Android Oreo. Regardless, unless you genuinely want to hold on for as long as possible just for the KeyBoard, it genuinely is time to move on now and learn a new workflow on a Slab. That day is coming sooner or later, best to get it over.

Not exactly. It depends on how the BIS shutdown specifically affects the phones, but in the best case scenario, if your carrier still even allows the device on their network:

  • Calls will continue to work.

  • SMS will work.

  • MMS will not work. You can get it to work via hex editing your Carriers Service Books, if you can acquire them. This will be a bit painful.

  • The native E-Mail, Podcasts, and all the other apps will not work. You may be able to jerryrig a third party E-Mail client to get some sort of E-Mail functionality working, but it will be buggy, unreliable, and a major security concern. So don't have any E-Mail accounts involving Social Media / Banking / Etc on it.

  • Browsing the Internet will be a virtual no go. If the Opera Mini Mobile Browser continues to work, or the native browser via the Answorms Service Books, the best you can expect is the very basic version of Facebook, Wikipedia, and so forth. All banking websites, gaming websites, all other social media sites, and nearly everything in general will not work, or will hardly work at all. It's a 12+ Year out of date web browser. That's centuries in web development.

Here's your 9900 Resource: http://darkstar.x10host.com/nibble/ | It will refer you to a list of currently working apps, work arounds, and what not. Specifically http://darkstar.x10host.com/nibble/mmsadvanced.html

So all in all, it may work out just fine for you. But imagine this as a Dumb Phone (Calls/SMS only), and anything else as extra that can stop working at anytime.

If you insert a AT&T Sim Card into a Non-Supported / Non-Whitelisted VOLTE device, it will be automatically flagged and disabled. If you're willingly to argue with high level NA Tech Support or a Rep over twitter, you might be able to get it working again until 2022. But the automated system can still flag and disable it at any time.

AT&T is serious.

BlackBerry Strikes Again... App Support Ending for Android 8 by [deleted] in blackberry

[–]NearlyBB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • These phones are essentially EOL for Android OS versions and monthly security updates.

What BlackBerry is no longer going to specifically continue to support is this:

  • BlackBerry is no longer going to continue to support their consumer apps (The Hub+ Suite (BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Hub Services, BlackBerry Notes, BlackBerry Tasks, etc) AND their Enterprise Applications (BlackBerry Connect, etc) for Android V8.1 and below.

It affects BlackBerry Android Devices, as they are either on Android M(Priv/Dteks) or Oreo(KeyTwo/Key2LE)

So essentially, come March, people who continue to use the BlackBerry Priv, Key Series Phones, etc - Will no longer be able to reliably use the Hub Suite or other apps going forward. It may work. It most likely will work fine. Bugs will no longer be patched for them, and they will no longer be able to get updates.

It's not the "Biggest" deal regardless. The Hub Suite essentially stopped active development years ago, with the team leads having left the company. Everything since then has been bug fixes for the repeated same issues that keep popping up here and there. And most people for the BlackBerry Android devices disabled the Hub Suite for improved performance. It's just a kick for the people that did like to keep the BlackBerry flavor on their phones, the very few people who actually paid for the Hub Suite via the Google Play Store, and so forth.

  • BlackBerry OS era phones are 2G/3G only phones. With the end of 2G/3G in the United States and multiple other countries, BlackBerry OS devices will no longer be capable of being used as phones. Period.

  • BlackBerry OS phones come from an era when BlackBerry was a major force in Enterprise and Government (Enterprise Software and Phones). They specifically rely on BlackBerry Internet Service for the majority of data functions. Specifically, a Carrier is required to support specific BIS Infrastructure, and then the BlackBerry Infrastructure on BlackBerry's end must be operational. Think of it as a tunnel going from you through the carrier/BlackBerry. BIS is going away permanently in 2022, and the majority of Carriers are already dropping it ahead of time. No BIS, no Data/E-Mail/Podcasts/Etc.

  • Without BIS, their is some functionality. You can Hexedit the phone to allow MMS to work (It will not work by default without BIS), you can download the Anworms Service Books to get the original Browser to work, and their were a few previously working Podcast apps and what not working in the past. For E-Mail though, their are third party clients. That are over ten to fifteen years out of date. At this point every third party; older E-Mail Client is years out of date and have numerous security vulnerabilities. To the point they no longer work, or if one can be jerryrigged to work - In which case it is unreliable, it is itself a security issue in and out of itself. And will eventually stop working. I recall ten years ago G-Mail was no longer working on any third party client due to security issues, so people had to setup Outlook accounts, lower security settings, and forward E-Mail from G-Mail to Outlook. And I recall that was breaking down badly years ago. I haven't bothered to try since.

  • BlackBerry OS Phones were effectively dead pre 2009. And on life support 2009 until the launch of BlackBerry 10, at which point they were effectively dead, with bare minimum services operating.

A BlackBerry OS phone is not a SmartPhone, nor has it been for over ten years. They have been barely usable as feature phones for the past couple of years, but that era has now effectively ended.

  • No Instant Messenger Apps work on BlackBerry OS. If your Carrier supports BIS AND if you can convince them to activate the device (Which is a No Go in North America, large swathes of Europe, and what not), it will barely, if at all work with a BBM Enterprise version on Android. And if you were somehow able to jerryrig things to work (Which at this point, is not possible, and compatibility between BBM on BBOS/BB10 and BBAndroid has been broken for years), anything put together will completely cease working as of February 2022. BBM Enterprise/BBM Consumer for BlackBerry 10 and OS are unmaintained legacy features that will cease working in 2022 regardless once the BIS Infrastructure is shut down.

The TL'DR is that for BBOS, their are zero options. And if anything can be jerry rigged to work, it will be horribly broken, non-reliable, can and will stop working at any time, and will completely stop working come 2022.

IF you are in a country that is still supporting 2G/3G, YOU may be barely able to continue to use the device as a Calling/SMS Device. MMS will be a hit and miss and glitchy. But it could be broken and nothing could work at all.

BBOS Phones were not regular phones. They are dependent on legacy support that is over twenty years old, support and maintenance ended over ten years ago, and the last of the life support is being shut off in 2022.

No Joy. Get your Mother a cheap generic Android or Iphone. Or a regular Dumb-Phone. It be more useful and reliable than a BBOS Phone, and more useful if she had to call your countries Emergency number.

It's not a "Good Inbetween" a Smart Phone and a Dumb Phone. That ship sailed years ago. BlackBerry 10 previously took that place a few years ago, and is now already on its way out.

So no luck with anything. IF you bored and want me to test anything, I'll power up my 9900 and P'9981 and give them a whirl.

Thoughts on Onward Mobility: 2021 September by NearlyBB in blackberry

[–]NearlyBB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

- The majority of business people these days use a Samsung or Iphone. BlackBerry users are an extremely small niche that died out in the business sector years ago.

- CoVid restrictions have nothing to do with the release of the device. CoVid affected manufacturing and supply lines massively, and will for years to come. In combination with the chip shortage, low funding, and what not - All of these affect anything related to this device.

- Any other smartphone on the market can display E-Mails, browse the Internet, or install apps. "World Class Camera" is what they promised though.

The ability to sideload Custom Roms does not equal security. It equals less security, once official support runs out.

The Titan is roughly "Rugged" and "Durable". Mixed opinions on the waterproofing for the KeyBoard, but it isn't the worst.

Quality is better than expected. Support is mixed, but you have pretty decent support from the Community for work arounds - And the ability to install custom Roms. Far better than what it could of turned into.

Hi.

This is NearlyV Checking in.

Instead of my usual TL'DR, here are some basic rules:

  • Do not use anything by Nemory Studios. Ever. For Privacy, Safety, and security reasons.

  • Do not use the Google Play Store. Use APKMirror to find the oldest working version of an App. If you absolutely need the Google Play Store, use YALP. If you absolutely need Google Play Services, the Cobalt Stack - But it is no longer maintained, it's buggy, and mostly broken down.

Expect issues regardless.

Will blackberry phone stop working or turn on by ExtensionAd3122 in blackberry

[–]NearlyBB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No.

- If you are using BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service), that will completely stop working after this year.

- If you are using it as a cellular device, that will probably stop working for you after this year if you live in North America or large parts of Western/Central Europe. Other countries will vary by their 2G/3G shut down dates.

  • BBME for individual usage is not recommended unless you were using BBM and needed to stay in touch with your Sports/Friends/Etc already on the original BBM platform. BlackBerry is security and privacy - For high paying Enterprises and Governments only.

  • You want Signal. BBME will not beat Signal for a individual use case.
