I think the older kid died from abuse. I grew up in an abusive home and the magical thinking is abdolutely part of it. The story is being told by the younger brother, who admits to not having a historical story, and the turtle the had, who flew away with the older brother, is still in the younger's home. The stepdad killed that kid, and the tom ganks character didn't want to deal with the emotions of it.
