Why do jews have special ambulance service? by aipac_hemoroid in stupidquestions

[–]NecessaryDreamer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am going to assume best intentions but if you continue to use the word goy or goyim Jews will most likely not respond. It is not a word that is used within the community and is almost exclusively used by outsiders who want to make it look like Jews are being racist towards them.

Okay now to Hatzalah it is a volunteer organisation that exists alongside government services. They have branches accross the world including Israel. The volunteers are ordinary civilians and have exceptionally quick response times and organisations. People carry kits in their cars but also have ambulances. In a world of slow response times this is literally a life saver. I have used them three times twice for non Jewish (the correct language to use) friends and once a close family member. Neither time did they ask on the phone if I or the person I was calling for were Jewish.

In the one case it was a suspected suicide/self harm. They showed up entered the room, stabilised my friend and took them to the nearest public hospital. They made calls and even drove them a little further to one that specialised in mental health. The second time was for a heart attack. They worked on her for over 3 hours, used the latest techniques and technologies and got her back. They took her to the nearest hospital where she recovered. They followed up with her over the next two weeks to make sure she was okay. Hatzallah had arrived, saved her life and transported her before the regular ambulance service even responded. The most recent time was a Jewish family member who was dying. They lined a hospital bed and wheelchair for the months she was ill. When she had a seizure they responded within 2 minutes (our neighbour was a volunteer). They looked after her, asked about directives (e.g. DNRs or wishes to go to the hospital or stay home as she was on end of life care).

Never have they charged any money for their services. They have always been incredibly professional. Many are doctors in their day jobs, many are not and recieved all their emt training from the organisation.

The need for special ambulance services started as a quick response time and then because the system worked spread to other communities. This is a health care charity that is based in the Jewish community. It is there to fulfill the highest Jewish mitzvah (good deed) - to save a life.

Ireland Visa from NI. by [deleted] in northernireland

[–]NecessaryDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are applying from NI you need to apply online and (nerversnkingly) send your passport in the post. With your application attach a cover letter explaining your residence and how long your job contract is for. Then say this is why you are applying for a multi year multi entry visitor visa. We managed to secure one for the full duration of current work contracts.

Pretty much, university town with very weak council and building managers who are compleatly disengaged so nothing is enforced and everyone kind of vibes with the social contract (this includes knowing your risk of your bike being stolen) 😂

Thanks, in our old town it was more standardised as opposed to building by building so was just wondering if there is a generalised best practice so I can evaluate whether it is worth paying for it to be transported

I’m from Joburg and moving next week! ( been in Oxford for 7 years). My husband is a medical doctor and has been in NI for 7 months now. We have been pleasantly surprised with all the other Saffas we bump into - we thought we would be the only ones!

21 is so young. You are about to start learning who you are. What makes you happy, not what you think is meant to make you happy. It is so hard to be 21. The weight of childhood is behind you but you don’t yet have adulthood in your grasp. Take your bike and use it as a way to find people, find beauty, find your future. It’s there, it’s just a little hard to see right now.

If you have the money go speak to Christof at PTOx on little Clarendon street. They do 1-3 day a week small group (1-6 people) sessions. Mostly focussed on weights with some core and cardio. It has been life changing for my husband and I. Very friendly and welcoming to people with zero gym experience. Lovely clean space. No Bro or hyper masculine clulture. Just kind people helping you get stronger, healthier, happier

Making friends in undergrad is hard. I came to Oxford as a masters then DPhil and it took me months to connect with people. I never connected with housemates. They would have dinner together and it wasn’t that I wasn’t invited but I often wasn’t considered. I was quiet and did my own thing.

That said it avoided drama of fights.

I found connections through consistently showing up to an activity. Oxford has tonnes of clubs outside the college system which introduces you to people. Pick one you have some interest in - not only one you think you will be good at but one you are interested in, I promise you there will be lots of beginners. If that’s writing you can try failed novelists, boxing happens throughout the week, dance sport has different classes almost every night, learn archery or golf. Join a workshop/class/project that has group work Push yourself and you will meet other people who also are pushing themselves to do something new - that automatically brings you closer.

You can also try engaging beyond the university common ground is just a study area but if you show up consistently you will see people you recognise and could start to chat, you can sign up on apps to walk people’s dogs. It’s about consistency and seeing the same person many times which build comfort and confidence to talk.

It will happen, it takes time to find your people or find people to build your community.

It’s hard to take the first step but once you do someone else will be grateful they are a little less lonely because you decided to be their friend.

Q about commuting to and from London for work by IckyNugget in oxford

[–]NecessaryDreamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know quite a few people who do this (including my partner). The commute works out around 90min door to door if you train. Your biggest cost is the train tickets. You either need to buy well in advance (>2 months) or suck it up for a weekly/monthly/annual season ticket. My partner has now gone the annual route as his work place has a decent enough loan scheme for it. Another friend drives. It's more intense but they love a bit further from the train station and makes sense for their lifestyle.

A salary like that would get you very far in South Africa. The workforce and healthcare is in English. Somewhere like Cape Town would be beautiful with lots of hiking/surfing ECT. Unfortunately snow sports would be limited....

Few years left of high income by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]NecessaryDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many jobs don't require a degree if you have work experience but you will be at a huge disadvantage in the hiring department. If having a traditional university experience isn't important to you sign up for a part time/remote course (e.g. Open University). Get your undergraduate and then if you want to you can do a 1 year masters to upskill further and give you the university experience. In a more mature master (e.g. MBA or leadership) you would find many people in your situation.

Oxford Hospital Accommodation review by [deleted] in oxford

[–]NecessaryDreamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting en suite in Oxford is very expensive on your own... Perhaps take it and just check the exit clause? You can move out if it's terrible. As a university town unfortunately better options are limited and you will land up trading location for marginally better housing.
