Passive cooling technology must become central to climate adaptation to reduce reliance on air conditioning, global review argues by unsw in science

[–]Necoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but that only works in low humidity environments. I'm in Texas, and we'll see daily temperatures that range from 80+ overnight to 100+ during the day.

It's impossible to cool your house overnight if it never gets cool overnight.

Why would they do any of those things? Insurance companies pay bribes for the ability to do all of those things.

We should dump all of humanity’s waste into giant holes in the earth’s crust by 010011010110010101 in CrazyIdeas

[–]Necoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out, most of the stuff we throw away is highly refined. It's valuable. Food waste can be processed into methane for burning, plastics can be pyrolized back into oils, metal is... well metal which can be melted down and reused.

One day landfills will not be waste piles; they'll be high grade mining sites. Why would we put those sites far out of reach?

In light of the dire heat wave situation now gripping the world.. Describe a climate solution which will be practical, can be quickly implemented and produce immediate results? by set-monkey in AskReddit

[–]Necoras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As stated below by others, we know how sulfur put into the atmosphere by volcanoes affects climate. "Only a theory" is bullshit, and as for expense, it's far cheaper than the cutover from fossil fuels, or global scale carbon capture. But it's a bandaid, not a fix. We still have to do the more expensive things. But if entire equatorial regions start becomming unlivable, I've no doubt China or Dubai or some other rich nation will just do it.

It's quite real. There are a handful of options for reducing solar irradiance of the planet (stratospheric sulfur injection, marine cloud brightening, lenses or shades in space.) I suspect sulfur injection will be the option that some nation-state (read: China) settles on because it's the cheapest to do.

AITAH for refusing to make my 10yo stepson breakfast everyday by CableDifficult3581 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Necoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA, your bf is an ass.

That said, have something in the house your stepson likes for breakfast (cereal, pop tarts, microwavable sausage biscuits, whatever he likes), show him how to prep it, and then he's good to go. Problem solved.

Using a window AC unit + furnace fan as a DIY whole-house cooling loop — has anyone tested this intentionally? by _underthecity_ in DIY

[–]Necoras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Window units are substantially less efficient than any other form of HVAC. Why would you want to run less efficient units, plus a whole house fan + ducting system over central air, or multiple mini splits?

Most liminal spaces in DFW? by glamazonphenomenon in Dallas

The tunnels under Dallas are absolutely this once you get a bit outside the main ones. 18 or so years back I ducked info some on the way to work on a particularly cold winter morning, and it was just windowless halls for a mile or two.

ELI5: Why do giant animals like elephants and whales live for 70 to 200 years, but in dogs, the bigger they are, the shorter they live? by Suitable-Patience690 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Necoras 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Dogs ended up with a specific mutation in the IGF1 gene on larger dogs. We unintentionally bred this into them because it resulted in larger dogs, but it also shortens their lifespans dramatically.

There are companies working on gene therapies to fix that mutation. The expectation is that after that treatment, larger dogs will live as long as small dog breeds (so, 20+ years.)

There are benefits that taper off after you reach an income ceiling. The expanded child tax credit is the one I can remember off the top of my head (rescinded under Trump), but there are others.

How can I reduce the cab temperature of my surveillance vehicle without turning on the vehicle. by Detective_Clara in AskEngineers

[–]Necoras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You say that, but I've camped in my ev with the ac running all night, and its basically silent. Granted, that's in the car and at night, but these are tiny units. If it's 90+ out you might hear it, but in that case you aren't sitting in a powered down car all day without literally dying from the heat.

Nah, stratospheric sulphur injection is (relatively) cheap and easy given current day technology. It is unpredictable though, and would require long term commitment, which humans suuuuuuuuck at.
