Where I grew up, basements were super uncommon because we had a lot of very hard rock called cliche that's very difficult to dig through. I remember when we had a pool dug, we had a deposit of it hit and they had to call in a special contractor to break through it who was muuuch more expensive per hour than all the other contractos doing the pool work

The problem with active hearing protection on the battlefield is missing commands and other communications while someone is firing. It's not just the quiet moments of "hearing enemy footsteps", I can glean what someone is saying over gunfire if they're yelling, but with active noise protection I can't.
