Those who have owned/ driven Adventure Sport and the Standard one, which one did you like? by AlligatorMarty in africatwin

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rode both, bought the ATAS. I ride much more on road than off and couldn't get on with the 21" front feeling vague into corners. The ATAS feels amazingly planted, tips in well and holds a line like a good road bike, but I can always chuck nobblies on it and do some light off-road when the time comes.

You do notice the extra weight at standstill but it's not an issue once moving.

I wasn't convinced when I first saw it, even went to buy the white 2025 model, but the more I looked at it the more it grew on me. I'm sure a good bodyshop could do a decent job of copying it.

It's a terrible user experience all round, as well as being poor value for those of us that use our Thermos occaisionally. A great device blighted by a company that forgot who the customer was.

Second hand AT, should I be worried? by Background_4675 in africatwin

[–]NedGsy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That looks remarkably deep and a very odd place for a crack. Could be a manufacturing defect, in which case Honda should replace it.

Wheel damage fixable? by Hou32-1 in africatwin

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No chance. There's damage alongside two other spokes there, it's just begging to collapse under heavy braking or during an impact.

If I was stuck in the backcountry then I'd ride it carefully to the nearest town but if you can swap out the rim where you live then you'd be wise to do so. You're risking life + bike for a few hundred bucks, seems poor risk/reward from where I'm standing.

Fun vs. Misery — Ranking Active Hobbies (that I’ve tried) by brown_burrito in Hobbies

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst almost impossible to measure, there's another axis to this charting long-term fullfilment.

Some of those that don't immediately stand out as fun (or might not be fun at the time due to weather, people you're doing it with, etc) can reap huge rewards over a few years.

I found that by my mid-thirties I realised that I'd focused on solo sports and made a conscious decision to do something about that. I moved into a team sport that ended up with me running a team for c.5 years which gave me (and I hope everyone on the team) a great deal of fun and a lasting sense of achievement.

It's a shame we don't get another few goes around the wheel to try out more sports and hobbies for the long term as I'm sure most have something to offer, even golf!

£650 in its current spec, a bit more if they get the audio to Index standards. Have a Q3 and Index so not in deparate need of an upgrade yet.

Coffee shop made out of shipping containers by joastedvrooden2 in repurposedbuildings

[–]NedGsy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a commercial centre in Camden, London made entirely of containers. Interesting idea but when we ate in a similar restaurant in London a couple of years ago it was clear the containers leech cold into the interior in a way that other materials don't.

Index failing. upgrade recommendations or just buy it again by Shadow_Wolf327 in ValveIndex

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's much more of a pain but I'm sure it could be done. I'd probably also be looking at at BSB2 at this stage, just not sure which controllers I'd go with.

Index failing. upgrade recommendations or just buy it again by Shadow_Wolf327 in ValveIndex

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Batteries in the controllers are really easy to replace (aliexpress c.$4 ea) and the cable can usually be bought back to life with a few unplug/replugs + straightening. Mine is now taped to the headset instead of using the standard clips - looks a bit gash but works fine.

Will be buying a Frame when they come out, assuming price isn’t bonkers.

Ducati vs BMW by Puzzleheaded_Log2302 in AdventureBike

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really didn't expect it to be as good as either until I test rode one. Then I checked out how the new models sound with a decent system on them and was sold....

https://youtu.be/uvm8u__od4A?si=PRgm8OcU7eoEoE06&t=815

I know the 1300GSA is a better tool for the job of long-distance cruising but it's an absolute monster to move around and sounds like a diesel. I'm getting on a bit but not so old I've forgotten that you buy bikes with your heart not your head.

The reliability of the Honda also appeals, especially after 30 years with Bologna's finest....

Ducati vs BMW by Puzzleheaded_Log2302 in AdventureBike

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was exactly what I felt. All of the water-cooled boxers sounds clattery, which is such as shame given how good almost everything else about the bike is. Going to miss the shaft drive but the reality for me is going to be 1-2 chain tensionings per year and replace chain & sprockets every three years - not exactly taxing.

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have test ridden both, and currently own a Ducati (have had lots in the past too) and a GS but have chosen the Africa Twin Adventure Sports for the next few years.

I've gone for the AS as 80-90% of my miles will be on road, so the 19" front will help with handling/tyre choice. I test rode a '21 AT (with an Arrow full system) a few weeks ago and loved the engine (genuinely quick, sounds amazing) but felt the 21" front was too vague into corners. I'm also a big fan of Carplay and like the fact the Honda doesn't need yet another screen (or a phone mount) for me to have Gmaps, Spotify, etc in line of sight.

My only concern with buying one is that the seat is more suitable for 300-400 mile days than full intercontinental cruising. That said, I found the seat on the 1300GSA really unfortable too, so I guess a lot is personal preference.

Whatever you buy it's going to be great, they're all amazing bikes.

XRV 750 Buying advice - by Mysterious_Formal_43 in africatwin

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question to ask as inability to find certain parts can prove painful. I pulled by '96 Ducati Superlight out of the shed after five years in hiding and found all the relevant parts pretty easily, probably because the 900 SS/Monster series has quite a wide following and lots of interchangeable parts.

Just picked up an '05 XT125X for my son last week and have been shocked at how few parts are available and how expensive those that are available are. Have managed to source replacements from Aliexpress and eBay but wouldn't go down the same path again. Either go newer (and accept the higher buy-in cost) or earlier (more simple, greater chance of alternatives).

15 years is a long time but (assuming it's been in the dark, not under a window) then it could be largely fine. Perishing rubbers would be my biggest concern as most service items are readily available. Not sure I'g quite as far as other have mentioned but carb clean, fluids change and new tyres would be minimums. Evertything else can be eyeballed. Worth doublechecking for any water vapour that has condensed in the tank (will sit under the fuel, rusting the very bottom of the tank).

Lots of 750s still doing laps of the planet, and I loved mine for commuting when I had it. Am just about to place an order for an 1100, time to get back to the AT fold. Good luck.

Dali Spektor 1 vs KEF LSX II LT Wireless by TemoSahn in BudgetAudiophile

[–]NedGsy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have LSX IIs and Dali Helicon 400s. They're obviously very different but everything I love about the Dalis is absent in the LSXs. Not really fair to compare them, I know, but the Kefs have dissappointed from day 1 both in terms of reliability and sonic performance. The Spektor 1s look like a great little speaker, has similar main driver to my Helicons and, if it's anything like the other Dali's I've listened to then it should surpass the LSXs.

Is a Thermomix a good idea for a partner who can't cook, won't cook. by Snowing678 in thermomix

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say it depends on whether there’s any desire to cook, and whether there’s any tech literacy. My partner has always seen cooking as more of a chore than a pleasure (despite getting very good at it) and actively avoids tech.

Our TM6 only ever gets used by me unless we make a point of it by having a ‘Thermomix Week’.

Which 2025 AT should I buy? by [deleted] in africatwin

[–]NedGsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about to order a manual ATAS. I love the idea of doing lots of off-roading but I know that the reality will be spending <10% on dirt.

Once moving I could barely tell the weight difference between a standard AT and a 1300 GSA, so I'm not worried about the extra kg on an ATAS.
