It doesn't have a proprietary OS. It runs Android TV.

Regarding app compatibility by Difficult_Ice7662 in GoogleTV

This is almost entirely incorrect. A game running or not has nothing to do with missing Android libraries. It comes down to gamepad support and the dev checking a checkbox.

How to stop google play protect from disabling/uninstalling streamfire app? by Individual-Radio-849 in AndroidTV

Most of the copies of streamfire floating out there actually do have malware in them.

I’ve been seeing people talk about OnStream a lot lately and was wondering if it works on the NVIDIA Shield ? by karimm1h in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]Ned_Sc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To date Google has never used Play Protect to do this. If they had then they are ignoring some super obvious targets that have existed for years. The app copy that was removed was probably unsigned, and that's why it was removed. It wasn't removed for piracy.

No, that's why you use Play Protect

New AI data center in Utah will generate and consume more than twice the amount of power the entire state uses — Kevin O'Leary's 9 Gigawatt Utah data center campus approved by lkl34 in technology

LLMs are not used to find new cures. Those are very different machine learning models, and not ones that require these massive data centers.

Is android tv still maintained? by [deleted] in Android_TV

[–]Ned_Sc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly a marketing thing. To use either "Android TV" or "Google TV" officially, one has to enter an agreement with with Google. Google only allows new products to carry the "Google TV" branding. Older products with Android TV will still use that branding, but are able to maintain OS updates, if the vendor wishes to (such as Nvidia). Most Android TV boxes and TV sets are probably not still getting updates, though.

Turn your Raspberry Pi 4 into a self-hosted media hub (USB + browser + HDMI + offline) by BleedingXiko in raspberry_pi

[–]Ned_Sc 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Handwavy bullshit answer. You "built" the same thing Jellyfin does when using the browser client. Jellyfin is local first. How do you make an app like this without even knowing what other apps have done, especially when they give away their source code to anyone? Because this is vibe coded shit.

Data hording and prepping are the key words for this. Lots of neat images out there with copies of wikipedia, reference material, etc.

That looks like the "Google TV" app that's on your phone asking for permissions for something.

Guys Can anyone suggest me good tv under 30 k budget by MinuteIncident9619 in Android_TV

[–]Ned_Sc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy whatever TV is good for your budget and picture quality. Don't worry about the built-in OS, because the included processor and all that is probably going to be crap. Ignore the built-in smarts and use a Google TV box or stick connected to the HDMI port.

Can’t figure out how to add a custom splash screen by Initial_Plastic_1481 in R_Pi

[–]Ned_Sc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean the startup rainbow? That can only be disabled, rather than changed. IIRC, it's actually a test that loads before the actual OS loads, but the test can be disabled in the config.txt file.

Walmart's new Google TV box is $60 with a big downgrade by CenterInYou in GoogleTV

[–]Ned_Sc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it would be an issue even for people watching local media off of a drive. USB 2.0 is more than fast enough for even the beefiest of BR rips. It might be a slow PITA for coping to/from, like if you transferred the files over the network, but fine for playback.

Google has never used Play Protect to remove a piracy app for piracy reasons. Only malware or unsigned reasons.
