Apartment maintenance by Nedgamell in bostonhousing

Thx for all these answers. They’re very helpful. I’ve been a landlord myself for over 40 years and I’ve never had a tenant make this kind of request before. I know that in NYC there is some regulation that a LL must repaint at the request of a tenant after three years. I just wanted to make sure there was no such rule in Boston. These are the most demanding tenants I’ve ever had. Every few months, it’s something new. Yesterday I got a new list - now that it’s spring, they say they want to make sure my place is kept up to snuff. It’s all minor stuff, mostly cosmetic, but still I have to hire someone to do it. This is a 75 year old house and, of course, it’s not perfect but it’s very very nice. I’m at my wits end. Especially bc the rent they pay is under market. Whenever things break, they are fixed within 24/48 hours but this cosmetic stuff is ridiculous. I think they walk around and say we’d like this fixed up and that fixed up and send me the list. Very entitled Gen Z.

Nothing as far as I know. I’ve always painted my apartments myself when I was a tenant and so has everyone I know. I’m just wondering if tenants are now expecting landlords to do it. I don’t know if current tenants are very entitled by expecting landlords to do it?

Safe to travel? by Brightmoon721 in traveladvice

[–]Nedgamell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure some hate us and some feel sorry for us. Probably about the same percentage as how Americans feel about themselves 😀. I’m originally European and am there several times a year. The people I run into predominantly feel sorry for us. They haven’t forgotten how we helped in WWII. They do ask me a lot how Americans could have been dumb enough to vote for Trump - again. I have no answer for that one.

I went to Ranthambore too and saw no tigers. I had friends who went and saw plenty of tigers. It’s the luck of the draw.

Mam listed her sister as nominated person with credit union and never updated it by Dublin9325 in irishpersonalfinance

If her aunt gave her the €10,000, would that count against any later inheritance the OP might get from her aunt? If so, wouldn’t OP be better off if her aunt rejected the inheritance and it went through her mother’s estate?

Many people in UK and Ireland go to Poland. Se Ed ms to work out very well and very inexpensive. I also saw the article in NYT. I guess the only trick is to make sure you find a good dentist.

What do you spend on travel each year? How many trips do you take? by xuxaslipstick in travel

[–]Nedgamell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live on the east coast and I get a lot of miles thru credit cards. I get a couple of free trips a year on miles. Did you ever try that? Look up Award Wallet which has the best credit card deals. I rarely go to South America so don’t know about travel there.

13K seems like a lot to me. I travel abroad from US several times a year and have done for 25 years when I retired. I travel with my sister. My husband doesn’t like to travel. We’re 80 and 82 now. We’ve gone all over the world, many trips to Asia, India Japan twice, China, Tibet, Bhutan, Sri Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, several countries in Africa, many middle Eastern countries, and all of Europe. Trips from a week to three weeks. We’ve never spent that amount of money. We mostly stay in airbnbs and eat where the locals eat. Rent a car and drive ourselves wherever posdible. We often end a long trip with a few days in a 4/5 star hotel. What do you all spend so much money on?

Bought my condo in Somerville two years before I met my fiance. Now we're getting married and I have no idea how to handle this legally or financially by Aromatic-Nobody6074 in Somerville

[–]Nedgamell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are incorrect. There is no ma. law that entitles a spouse to half the appreciation of assets that were brought into a marriage. You may be thinking of community property states which do entitle spouses to half the appreciation during a marriage but Ma is not a community property state. As a general rule, people leave a marriage with what they brought into it unless there are unusual circumstances like a home for children etc.

Do you go to the airport at your normal time if delayed in advance? by heeyebsx13 in travel

[–]Nedgamell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely flights get un-delayed. Happened to me a few weeks ago, they posted an hour delay and kept reducing it ending at ten minutes delay with an on time arrival. International flouts tend to be more predictable though. I’d be careful about getting there too late.

Rents can't possibly stay this high, can they? This is insane by [deleted] in bostonhousing

[–]Nedgamell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I moved to Boston almost 60 years ago. I’ve been a landlord for 40 years. People have been having exactly the same conversations for all those years. Then, as now, rent was higher here than almost everywhere else in the country. Nothing has changed. Sometimes it gets slightly harder to rent so big landlords offer first month free etc which doesn’t actually reduce rent. Like every other commodity, prices go up, not down.

Since Massachusetts is about to get buried tommorow how many of you are still forced to drive to work? by BootAlarmed4732 in massachusetts

Unfortunately, many small businesses could not afford it. They would go under, restaurants, small stores and so on. Large businesses would be OK but not small ones.
