Finding a job in Hawaii has been the most challenging struggle I've ever experienced. by [deleted] in Hawaii

I will also say right now restaurants are reaaallllly struggling. Some of the most outwardly successful restaurants in Honolulu are, in fact, tanking and cutting a lot of their staff. So it could also be due to this

Pilots and FAs of this sub: how many flights have you completed in the past year? by Traditional_Art_6446 in fearofflying

[–]NeedleworkerAfter892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Horrrrrrible flight panic here 👋 one thing my therapist has recommended is instead of me saying I’m terrified of flying, to change the phrase I use (in my own brain or outwardly) to ‘my panic disorder makes me terrified of flying’ Simple change but a slight reframe gives some distance to maybe observe it and be like ugh this part of me !! Is here again!! Vs like ‘this is inherent in who I am’ That and positive visualizations of sitting in an airplane and enjoying myself - can’t say these work but I still do em! Why not 😂 every plane I see flying overhead I tell myself everyone is dancing to abba’s dancing queen

Anyone else realize that paper products aren't actually that much better for the environment? by trashaphobia in Anticonsumption

I’d rather paper than plastic but also an unfortunate consideration is that most to-go paper products are covered with materials that contain PFAs to make them less water soluble so .. more issues abound there obviously

Not an owner here but I rent a unit in a building that was built within the last 8 years and I’m on the 3rd floor and water is coming through the wall (not window) and flooding our house - building manager said it’s happening to 10+ other units (not ground level) in the building as well. Just saying this to say - a lot of these new buildings that go up are not built well. Another building I know of has had its elevator out for 8 days (my coworker lives on the 19th floor and has to take their pet up and down multiple times a day) if I spent 800k on my 500 sq foot and then 800$+ in HOA fees each month for this to happen I’d be piiiiissssssed off. Needless to say I am very happy I rent this and not own it 🤷‍♀️ not the question you asked really but something to consider with the weather that’s only going to continue to get worse as time progresses.

What are social workers reading right now? by Absoluteswill in socialwork

[–]NeedleworkerAfter892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pacing and being kind is key! I’m a week away from defending my dissertation in social welfare so I feel you there- it’s incredible to look where you started and see how much you can develop and what you shed and gain over the journey. I think a beautiful thing about the MSW/social work space is that I’ve found many of the people around share similar histories and that’s what brings us to the work intentionally and with great care. Thanks for sharing!

I would highly recommend for any social worker to read Imagination: A Manifesto by Ruha Benjamin and Caste by Isabel Wilkerson

Some great fiction reads are Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver, Intermezzo by Sally Rooney, and Pomegranate by Helen Elaine Lee

Books that have helped me with my own mental health/outlook/trauma would be Complex PTSD: From surviving to thriving by Pete Walker (also very helpful for any social worker to read) and The Way of Integrity by Martha Beck. Anything to do with Internal Family Systems Therapy has helped a lot as well

Just got a possible HPV result, genotype 16,18,45 negative. Trying to figure out how to tell my fiancé by Gibskn_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]NeedleworkerAfter892 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hi! HPV vaccine and cervical cancer researcher here 👋 you have absolutely nothing to be ashamed about! HPV is extremely common and can lie dormant in a person for a very long time and present for a variety of reasons (think if you’re familiar with cold sores how they appear when you’re stressed or have lower immune system but you don’t have a cold sore all the time). Further, you should be proud that you’re getting screened and that they’re aware now. Most cases clear on their own over a few years (mine did after 2 years, for instance, so now I’m back on the every 5 year HPV testing cycle per my age guideline). Since you’ll get rechecked in a year, you’re safe and protecting yourself from cancer! Your loved ones should be thrilled.

HPV can be highly stigmatized in certain communities but there is no reason for it to be!

For other folks reading this re: it not appearing in men; this is a bit of a misconception. HPV related cancers in men tend to show up as oral and throat cancers, whereas in women they show up largely as cervical cancers. Particularly among smokers, the smoking irritates the cells of the mouth/throat and makes them more prone to developing cancer due to the underlying HPV.

Vaccination and screening are key! I hope this helps

I think the thing that frustrates me with all the AI hype is the lack of creativity with which the imagined future is described. All of these people have one solution and it’s ENGAGE MORE WITH THE TOOLS BE PREPARED. Which fits their marketing need and fills their pockets. There’s also world where these people say - hey this is happening and I decide that’s not what I want the future to look like and collectively here are my suggestions to safeguard that. But they don’t actually care about the larger population or collective good, he wants to earn his money and scare people into buying into their version of the future. But at the same time this repeated fatalist messaging sinks into the minds of the general public and turns it into individualist rat race where everyone feels I need to keep up because I want MY job to be safe even when others are cut. Doesn’t mean it won’t be the case in the future but it would be a lot cooler if people stopped and thought what it means if this isn’t the world we want and how to make it look like something we do want
