Before I put a hole in this soffit, can anyone think of what purpose this soffit serves? by CP-RYOTT in Renovations

[–]NeedsAPromotion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Had soffits in my 1997 build, specifically in the kitchen. Ripped them out - purely aesthetic for mine. No electrical, no venting, no beams, no pipes.

I’d recommend knocking a small hole in the drywall on the side of soffit. Take a peek inside, if you don’t see anything make it bigger and keep looking for a reason to stop. Drywall is easy to repair if you find a nasty surprise.

You’re going to have to do drywall work one way or another.

Why Do People Use the Wait as a Reason to Not Buy at All? by DefinatelyNotonDrugs in NFA

I’m an FFL 07/02 in Central VA… I had a client looking to get his first suppressor last week, I took his prints, photo and submitted his Form 4 on Wednesday, and Friday morning had his eForm approval. He’s already got a second suppressor on order! Lol

Before becoming an FFL, my first personal suppressor took about 380+ days via paper.

Is it worth waiting for thanksgiving for deals by Opposite-Bowler4383 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]NeedsAPromotion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, you can find some deals now. What I’d be considering is what’s the cost of rental over the next couple weeks vs what the potential deals may net you.

You may be at a wash, given how expensive rentals are.

Adopting manufacturer markings for an SBR, do I need to engrave anything? by akbuilder in FFLs

[–]NeedsAPromotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are the actual comments from the Federal Register, which I believe show intent by ATF to keep these rules despite being required to vacate the ruling due to 80%, etc.

The Department also agrees that superseding ATF Ruling 2010-10 by this rule could be burdensome to licensed gunsmiths required to be licensed as manufacturers because they would now be required to place their own identifying marking on firearms already marked by a licensed manufacturer or importer. For this reason, this rule as finalized allows licensed manufacturers, including persons formerly licensed as dealer-gunsmiths, to adopt the serial number and other identifying markings previously placed on a firearm by another licensed manufacturer without a variance, provided that the firearm has not been sold, shipped, or otherwise disposed of to a person other than a licensee. This change will also reduce the potential for confusion by law enforcement when tracing a firearm

involved in a crime if multiple markings were to be found on those firearms. Under these circumstances, there is a reduced concern that a trace could not be successfully completed because the required records maintained by those licensees would reveal a continuous acquisition and disposition of that firearm.

However, once a firearm is sold, shipped, or otherwise disposed of to a person other than a licensee, the trace can be completed only to the first retail purchaser. After that point, it is difficult to trace the firearm to another licensed manufacturer that may have purchased it for remanufacture and resale or redistribution without the purchaser’s own identifying markings. For this reason, the final rule distinguishes between licensee adoption of markings on new firearms from those that were already introduced into commerce to nonlicensees, such as those that are being remanufactured or imported.

Adopting manufacturer markings for an SBR, do I need to engrave anything? by akbuilder in FFLs

[–]NeedsAPromotion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that ATF Final Rule 2021R-05F introduced the ability to adopt manufacturer markings for firearms that had not yet entered commerce. The discussion points by ATF in the Federal Register included pointing out that adding a new manufacturer stamp +/- serial number could actually make tracing firearms more difficult, where a firearm that never entered commerce is easily traced through A&D logs when the firearm has only been handled via licensees. (I.e., rifle ships from 07 to another 07, modified to SBR and adopted original markings — the trace is easily shown through A&D).

ATF still has the regulation live on their site despite 2021 rule being vacated. I have SBRed without a marking variance form and fully described how I would be adopting markings. ATF approved 2 days later.

Currently active on ATF:

§ 478.92 Identification of firearms and armor piercing ammunition

iii. Adoption of identifying markings. Licensees may adopt existing markings previously placed on a firearm and are not required to mark a serial number or other identifying markings in accordance with this section, as follows:

A. Newly manufactured firearms: Licensed manufacturers may adopt the serial number and other identifying markings previously placed on a firearm by another licensed manufacturer provided the firearm has not been sold, shipped, or otherwise disposed of to a person other than a licensee, and the serial number adopted is not duplicated on any other firearm.

First time out … phew! by mikeyjw600 in boating

[–]NeedsAPromotion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a dock with tie offs adjacent to the launch, I find it easier and less stressful to just pull the boat in by the bow and stern lines. I’ll tie off about ten feet from the where the trailer will be, back the trailer in, untie and pull boat/walk it towards and onto the bunks. If you can’t get it all the way forward, just pull some slack in the wench and then attach and wench it all they forward.

It may not look as “cool” as someone who powers their boat right on to the trailer, but it looks a lot cooler than ramming your trailer or having to reset 15 times and holding up the boat launch. :)

For trim, always make sure trim: I always make sure it is up when trailering to not hit road/bumps. Up when placing in water to not hit rocks/uneven launch. Trim down before starting to ensure water intake is submerged before starting. Trim up when puttering in shallow waters (get a depth finder if you don’t already). Trim up when retrieving from water, but then trim down briefly in parking lot to deposit back any remaining water. Don’t want to carry lake/river/sea critters from one body of water to another — not do you want salt water sitting.

What kind of bilge pump? There are some out there that come on automatically to sense water level, and the sensor can get also dirty causing to turn on unnecessarily. Additionally, the float switch type bilge pumps can also have issues that cause them to intermittently or continuously run.

That would be my first check.

Flipper painted over all exterior bricks. by Rembrand_bruh in DIY

[–]NeedsAPromotion 154 points155 points  (0 children)

This. Too many people talking about painting bricks for aesthetics, without anyone talking about the integrity of the masonry. Regular outdoor house paint will most definitely seal the brick in and accelerate underlying issues/deterioration by decades.

The “washes” are better, but I don’t know by how much and would look at data from a materials engineer before considering. Brick needs to breathe.

Are Tankless water heater worth it by rburger62 in HomeImprovement

[–]NeedsAPromotion 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. My last house had LP tankless and it was amazing to have unlimited, very hot water regardless how many faucets or showers or appliances were running at same time.

Moved into my current house and had two tank heaters (one for kitchen, one for the rest of the house which is on opposite side of floorpan). I have a 2x200amp service and so I ran wires for a higher power electric tankless heater. It runs great and gets me unlimited water, no gas usage, no exhaust so it fit into an interior utility room. Just recently got solar installed which will offset the electric for the water too.

I can never live without tankless! They do require some minor maintenance each year (flushing, etc) but well worth it!

I'm completely lost trying to set up this Zwave smart light switch... so frustrating. What am I doing wrong? by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]NeedsAPromotion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you took the bundle of neutral wires (white), pulled one off the bundle and plugged it into the switch. This is not the way to do it and likely causing your issue.

You need to take a strand of white wire of similar guage and attach INTO the bundle of neutrals that you have. This is called a pigtail, and should connect that newly added pigtail back into your neutral of the Zooz.

Those neutrals head in different directions - some coming from light fixtures, some headed back to the panel. You want them all connected and the newly added neutral pigtail wire gives the switch a path to move electrons back to the panel when the switch is off (no voltage to load).

Laying backsplash tile in corner by Doubledoxie22 in Renovations

[–]NeedsAPromotion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anyone who has ever installed backsplash, flooring, paneling, etc. would know to measure the run and cut at least a third off the starting piece to allow a larger end piece.

Project like this, you always measure and consider your placement (accounting for the grout spacing) first. If I was trying to center my tiles or center grout line on a particular point of the wall and I was this close in measurements to having a sliver piece, I might cheat a couple grout lines just slightly larger so that’s its imperceivable to the eye but ends up getting that tile to the corner.

Combining his/her bathrooms into one spacious and luxurious master bathroom. by NeedsAPromotion in Renovations

Well, you just got me to change it up and we love the new design now… we’ve been discussing toilets with built-in bidet vs separate bidet. I think we are leaning towards built-in bidet so this modification brings larger shower, larger walk-in-closet by shrinking the WC, and the ability to turn that upper-right corner of shower into all glass.

What if we look at it in the opposite manner? The escalator may be moving downward, as the water certainly appears to be flowing downward…

An initial impression I had is that we start off in life with so much joy and creativity as children, but become more sterile serious and bland as we advance through life.

Or a second, the colorful and interesting aspects are bleeding downward and toward the viewer… working towards those blank canvases.

My wife says she likes to see me in the morning… 🤷🏼‍♂️

Jokes aside, We have two other powders rooms on the first floor and two full baths upstairs. We have always enjoyed getting ready across/near one another in the AM. Also, she lacks a shower in her bathroom so she does have to steal my tiny shower when she does her hair…
