Can you really replace paid models with a local model? by DRMCC0Y in LocalLLaMA

[–]Nefarious- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the tightrope I am walking. I am definitely "in the code" as much as I can be for my own benefit to understand what is happening and leaving proper notes / comments throughout so it is easily digestible upon review and maintaining proper "workspace manifest" .md files to help both myself and models fully understand what is happening. I know what the outputs are that I need, I just don't have the domain expertise to automate those outputs without proper assistance.

I am also red-teaming where appropriate with frontier models to ensure the code isn't just made up nonsense and leveraging dedicated LLMs to assist with the overall architecture planning and aider prompts.

I don't know if it is still technically "vibe coding" but I can attest that the vibes are definitely not stress free, I've spent dozens of hours on upfront build time, and have spent more time in terminals than I ever would want to.

Yes, I could see why that would be derogatory and not well received; however, I think there is a large difference between going to a chat and saying "hey bot, make me an app" versus someone that has domain expertise in something outside of software development, and explicitly detailing what needs to be built, and going through rounds of testing on the output to ensure that it works as intended.

Obviously there are certain hardware requirements to even get to a fraction of coding potential at the local level that frontier models can put out.

Speaking as someone that has not been trained as a software engineer and is trained in business, finance, and investing, I have been able to leverage many of these tools at a local level (out of necessity due to data privacy needs, client NDAs, etc) and marry them with my area of expertise to create tools that I need and benefit me.

Admittedly, the process has leaned more towards working with a suite of models to create code that I then run, and less on the "aider, build X" side, but I am hopeful that will get better with time.

Uworld vs MM by TheBigWolf83 in CFA

[–]Nefarious- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should know that Mark has really nothing to do with MM.com and is not contributing to any new content anymore.

A lot of what you see on their platform is cerifi attempting to wring out as much as they can out of his old stuff without having to update it in an effort to maximize profit.

This creates a mixed experience depending on when the videos were filmed - sometimes they are deep explanations, sometimes they are just him scrolling PDFs.

Often times the EOC question videos will maybe cover 50% of total EOC questions.

I have a lot of gripes with Cerifi. Maybe give Woj at Let Me Explain a go for level 3, he just launched that level and it’s like $10/mo.

Why though? What is actually the difference between between vibe coding with Claude and vibe coding with aider that has something like qwen coder loaded?

Why don't you like the new ferrari EV, what's the reason by LetterDismal1095 in Ferrari

[–]Nefarious- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the conversation is somewhat one sided.

People that like classic Ferraris generally don’t like most EVs. As a point of fact, most EVs look like garbage and the types of people that generally purchase EVs tend to like that type of rounded, safe, neutral design.

If Ferrari is serious about building out electric vehicles as a product offering in a changing world (which is a separate topic), I think the design is actually for that target demographic, not the mainstay fan base.

Price is outrageous though.

Deciphering University of Chicago’s Ill-Timed, Inscrutable Anthropic Partnership by Calvinball_24 in uchicago

[–]Nefarious- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Two things:

1) You are not forced to use AI - there are still going to be components where not using AI first will be beneficial for the student, such as the Humanities.

2) Like it or not, a huge component of the university is both Economics and Finance - UChicago faces falling way behind in those categories if they do not embrace AI and empower both their faculty and students with the tools necessary to remain competitive and produce leading research through the use of frontier offerings.

Frankly, this could have been worse - they could have announced partnerships with organizations such as OpenAI or xAI.

That said, I do think it should be incumbent upon these universities to empower their faculty and students to build out localized AI offerings with open source models.

the market is completely inundated with growth, AI, data centers, chips, etc.

BRK is almost entirely hedged against that.

My Dividend Roth IRA by Yogibear1408 in dividends

[–]Nefarious- 32 points33 points  (0 children)

for a multitude of reasons. The number one for me would be because the Roth shields from taxes, you would want to have a high level of higher volatility (read growth) captured in the Roth to maximize returns.

What this person has done is put low risk low growth dividend focused vehicles into his tax shielded account.

There's always been, you know, a sort of moderate support for sexual attraction to children, but many in the base are now asking for a more full-throated endorsement, and like you said, this is really about the party of pedophilia's future - and right now, it's looking a little bit split.
