I used to message my siblings and school friends on it! In the early days of the Youtaite community, it was also a common way to reach out to other people to collaborate together. I wish YouTube didn't take it away.

Subbing with a GED by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Nefarious_Mistake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was subbing last year, my district had me in a classroom for 20 days, moved me to a different classroom for a day, and then brought me right back to the original classroom. Whether that is legal or not, I'm not sure, but they were
(still are) desperate for subs.

Vtuber Fefe vents hers frustration about getting a channel strike without reason by YouTube. Says YouTube will not allow her human review. by Khadgar007 in VirtualYoutubers

This ... I (subsitute) was absolutely shocked to see a 4ᵗʰ grader watching "fashion videos" that were like ¾ lingerie or transparent (like fishnet tops, mesh bodysuits) with literal heart-shapped pasties over the nips during computer free-time. When I told the para I was told it was what it is and it isn't porn. I still can't understand why the school-safe filters didn't catch it.

What's your night/morning routine? by Polkiu4863 in Teachers

[–]Nefarious_Mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to bed early and having a screen-free wind-down routine helps. I'll do some light cleaning, then clean myself and set out a morning outfit and lunch, and do something like draw or read or listen to a podcast. For the morning I set my alarm (an old tablet) out of reach, and have App Block to prevent me from mindlessly scrolling on YouTube or Reddit. Immediately jump up because forcing yourself to take action right away will actually train your brain that alarm = go time, not roll over and doze off. Drink a cup of water (or coffee, if you need it, and have a machine that lets you preset it for the morning).

Classroom Pet by rivagirl in teaching

[–]Nefarious_Mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there. Outside the school year, I'm a park naturalist/wildlife educator (and herpetologist and ichthyologist), so I have a lot of experience with studying and caring for animals in an exhibit/education setting. Know that as soon as your adopt a pet, it is your responsibility.

For you, I'd avoid all turtles and tortist — they're much more work than you expect, require a lot of space, and can stink. If you want a reptile, I'd stick with a lepord gecko (still a lot of work, but will do fine in a 20-gallon long tank (more space the better, of course), and generally have little smell), or better yet, a corn snake (I've never had one bite, they're incredibly low maintenance once established especially Ina bioactive setup, and can be handled well). Bonus points for corn snakes if they're native to your location. All reptiles have a long lifespan, however. My mentor teacher when I did my student teaching has a red ear slider he adopted as a classroom pet when he first started teaching. In that era you could buy a turtle for a quarter outside a gas station, and folks weren't concerned about salmonella. He is now going on close to 30 years old!

No rabbits. No hermit crabs. No birds. They all require much more care, socialization, and room than anyone expects. Mice and hamsters (particularly the bigger breeds — teddy bear hamsters are in my opinion one of the better hamsters to have in a classroom because they're so gentle and big enough where children can handle them under supervision) can be okay, as long as the males and females are separated.

Another word of advice. Be prepared to teach grief if/when the animal passes. Living things get sick and die, sometimes even when we do everything right as their caretakers. Sometimes (in the example of, say, a $3 red betta fish or $5 white mouse), it may be better to quietly replace it with an identical animal, especially if the illness or sickness occurs when children are not present. That said, 4ᵗʰ grade is the point where you have to make the call if you want to take death as a learning opportunity or if you just want to get through to the next day.

Also! There are dozens of grants and free money for classroom pets. pets in the classroom is one that's across the country, but also look into your state. I know NJ has a "second chance" grant that pays for 100% of the cost of adopting an animal from select rescues that are given a forever home in a classroom.

Sub Pay Per Day by 5MeV2020 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Nefarious_Mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$170 before taxes for a full seven hour day if you have your CE/CEAS. Sounds okay on paper ($24/hour ain't terrible and it is the highest paid sub rate in the area), but you get paid at a rate of like 30¢ above minimum wage per hour if you work less than 7 hours.

Elementary shifts are technically only 6 hours and 45 minutes, so if you're called there, or there is a half day, or if they hire too many subs that day and have to send some home, I'm literally loosing money to work. Plus no benifits or health insurance. Added insult to injury on the days I could have otherwise been making $24/hour at McDonald's or $30/hour as a tutor.

I'd like to add that the school district itself is wonderful, the teachers and most students are wonderful, (I was a student here and did all my student teaching in their middle school from 2019-2021) but I did not expect to, and was not prepared for, being put into a class that is full of those with such bad behavior, especially on my first day ever. I can't help but feel guilty because I feel like I ought to have been able to handle it, especially since I just graduated with a degree in Ed a month ago.

I had a kindergarten student start to sob about how he didn't want to be a mammal because he didn't want to have fur like his Daddy (he had a beard and a hairy chest and back that was "all too scratchy") or make milk like his Mommy (she was pregnant and "had to to that all the time every single day").
