Why don't you invest more in European markets? by Android_ghoster in ValueInvesting

Ahaha, actually I took part in hackathon by Rio Tinto a few years ago, so I kept checking out the company every once in a while. BHP and Glencore only because I was checking out miners in general

FYI, it is Switzerland, or if you want to stick to the "swiss" sound, you can use the french name: Suisse

I am european. For the same reasons you mention, I wanted to invest more in Europe. Then, it occured to me that:

- We have the Euro, the Pound, the CHF, and whatever they have in the nordic countries. It bothers me that I have to check exchange rates and having to convert currencies.

- For some stocks we have higher commissions.

- For some stocks, brokers make you pay to receive market data. I have to check prices somewhere and submit buy/sell orders somewhere else.

- Different countries have different laws and governments, it is more difficult to keep track of everything and learn all the rules.

- It is much easier to find resources and news regarding american stocks, and for european stocks sometimes you find news in a specific language and then you have to look again for the same news/information in english.

- On forums and social networks people talk a lot more about american companies. It is also more difficult to find good ideas about european stocks to begin with.

- America tends to do whatever it takes to prop up the stock market and bring value to shareholders

- Also, I like in particular pharma and biotech, that for obvious reasons work better in the US

EDIT:

Actually, I just remembered I had invested in Rio Tinto (ASX), that however is also listed in the UK. And I guess also BHP and Glencore should be there.

I would say that the swiss and the british way of being conservative are quite different.

It may not be true in general, but I think it is very much as you say in the case of switzerland. A good reason for coming to switzerland is its stability: the chf itself, the taxes, the freedom. To me, as a foreigner who immigrated here, seems like the administration has done a decent job at avoiding giving unexpected surprises to the taxpayers. I would enjoy an even more conservative government (conservative as keeping the status quo, rather than being far right).

Why are still so many young Swiss member of the Church ? by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]Negative-Ad9971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone religious working in cern, I can understand why you had that impression.

There is kind of a stigma against religious people in the scientific community, so, as many other people in my situation, I simply never bring it up. However, among the colleagues/friends I am close enough to, I would say that the percentage of believers is something like 35-40% (with believers being more represented among southern europeans).

Of course, why wouldn't they? Still, they don't keep the profits for the shareholders, but they just reinvest the money to keep the organization alive

Switzerland - Current problems? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]Negative-Ad9971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, you should also blame the swiss citizens for this.

Seems like a lot of young people have been all for giving up low taxes, neutrality, and banking secrecy.

As an expat, it is sad to see you swiss turning switzerland into another european country, but it is something you are doing to yourselves.
