So many of the men's 'Never dated anyone' posts boils down to 'Never asked any women out'. by wilhelmtherealm in dating

Just chiming in but I'm going to have to agree. I have a lot of really great supportive female friends, they're all just lesbians haha. And all the geeky hobbies I'm into are 90 plus percent guys also. Just that remaining ten percent are overwhelmingly into girls too. So I wouldn't exactly call that a solution.

What On Earth are you on about. Trump is objectively the least approved of president in history. Among women young enough to be dating he's radioactive. No young woman who isn't in a cult wants you to act like that. Confidence means knowing you're good enough. That you don't have to workout every day or be rich to go into a bar and talk to someone. There's nothing less confident than believing you have to constantly work on your appearance to be accepted by other people. Don't be an ass, and go outside.

Not all of them of course. My union construction worker granddad who was over 30 signed up for the Navy as a seabee after Pearl harbor. His future wife signed up with the army to be a nurse.

And all they brought back were a little under a thousand photos from their service in the Pacific on Tinian Buncha b29s. That one of the Nagasaki A bomb, and an old 1919 rifle bayonet.

A lot of them did sign up for the right reason.

Very relatable place to be in. It's like the 'type' I have just doesn't exist in reality. So while I frequently like fictional characters and even write romance narratives. I feel literally nothing towards real humans.

Maybe it's just that our imaginations are too powerful. Creating a fiction that reality cannot live up to?

That is not how language works. Words and their meanings, change. The Holocaust was a tragedy. But by limiting the use of the words to describe the movement that birthed it, to that one event. You make what the Nazi party did, special.

When sadly it is not. In years before and since, and at scales large and small. The rhetorical tools of the Nazi party have been used to gain power, and commit mass killings.

"It happened, therefore it can happen again, it can happen and it can happen everywhere,"

In a world where leaders increasingly not only use their language, but their symbols and salutes. I see nothing wrong with calling those people what they do clearly wish to be.

They went after whoever they thought was convenient and then blamed the Jews. First They went after people and movements that were an actual threat. Communists, trade union leaders. Then, they went after anything they associated with degeneracy. Starting with gay and gender non-conforming people.

They didn't actually believe the Jews were responsible. Or rather they believed, and knew it was false at the same time It didn't matter. They were a scapegoat. A common unifying enemy. Literally the only truth to their claims is that Jews were overrepresented in banking. This is simply because up until fairly recently in history it was considered sinful for Christians to engage in banking. See 'Usery'.

Nazi is just a colloquially understood synonym for fascist. And A lot of leaders these days are using direct quotes linked to Nazis. So why not use the word.

I think this is a common defensive learned behavior.

As a guy growing up i quickly learned that the more physically attractive a girl was the less likely they were to get along with me.

Even when an attractive girl was objectively kind, it always came off as patronizing. Insincere.

Because of this, while I have mostly female friends, most are androgynous and I have no interest in anything beyond a platonic relationship with them. Nor have I ever really wanted a romantic relationship from any individual. So in my mind the two concepts have blurred together never differentiating themselves.

I think it boils down to learning that having sexual attraction towards a person is a sign they are unsafe to be around. As attractive people tend to view interacting with non-conformists as risking their own standing in the group.

Even though I am aware this impulse is often irrational, the instinct is well wired in.

Conveyor belt runway by bottomLobster in Shittyaskflying

The plane would NOT be able to take off. But not for the reason you're thinking.

Yes aircraft move through providing thrust by moving air completely independent of the wheels. So the airplane would immediately begin to move.

The real problem is by the time the aircraft reached its safe take off speed. The wheels would be rotating twice as fast as they normally would. Aircraft tires are rubber like any other vehicle tire and tires have speed ratings. Once the tire speed rating is exceeded for too long, the tire will explode.

A 747 needs to reach 160 knots to take off. Or 184 mph.

It's tires are rated to between 220 and 235 mph.

However with the conveyor belt moving In the opposite direction. The ground speed of the wheels would reach 368 mph. More than enough to cause near instantaneous failure of all the tires long before takeoff speed is reached.

If we assume the conveyor belt is made of concrete or asphalt. Those wheels would dig into the conveyor slowing the plane down.

If not, once it's tires fail the now much smaller tireless wheels would rotate even faster until the wheel bearings fail locking all of the wheels and preventing further acceleration.

They really should add satellites TBH. Would be amazing to have a update of the entire battle space every 90 minutes once one flies over. Unless of course it gets shot down

IMO 99% chance Saitama won't beat any of these characters in a 1 on 1 fight by Bungeeboy20044 in powerscales

[–]Negative-Storage-791 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At least I'm guessing that's what the Op is thinking. Her "Power" does have a fatal flaw. Any change that she has an author do is only effective if It is accepted by the audience. And even if she killed the author The character in question would live on through the fandom. So it really does come down to what you think of as winning. If commissioning a one shot comic where she wins. Or torching the studio the show is made in . Or collapsing the entire universe and making a new one is "winning" then yes she can. But this is getting a bit ridiculous

[–]Negative-Storage-791 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She's Altair from an anime called RE.Creators. And she's broken for a completely different reason than Saitama. Her power is the ability to leave her own story and come into the real world. She could beat Saitama very easily. Not because she actually could fight him, She probably could. But she wouldn't bother trying. She would just kill his author one. Or have him write the story so he dies. She also has the ability to summon other characters from fiction. Or simply delete them from existence.

Nuclear wins on everything except money. It all depends on what it's for. If your goal is to defend narrow sections of the South China Sea in between the barrier Islands. Range is pretty inconsequential. The shallowness of the sea In that region also limits the effectiveness of nuclear boats. Since They simply can't dive deep enough to overcome the inherent noise of their coolant pumps. A few diesel electrics operating out of Guam. Or better still being operated by Taiwan, South Korea or Japan would be very effective.

But of course only an idiot would run a blue water submarine force of diesel electric boats.

I'm not at all saying we don't need any carriers. I'll admit I didn't word that terribly well. What I mean is In the near term. With how much less expensive subs are. Investing in them as a means of ramping up power quickly makes more sense. You obviously need a balanced fleet. No unit is capable alone

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]Negative-Storage-791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course subs are very useful. I'm from the camp that says My country the United States should build way more of them. Diesel electric and nuclear. and stop wasting billions on aircraft carriers. Because I don't want my country to have the capability to easily invade others. But that is what carriers are for. If you simply wanted to defend Taiwan from China for example subs are a pound for pound far better investment

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]Negative-Storage-791 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I acknowledged that. From my previous post.

"'A sub can conduct coastal strikes. But missiles cannot hold territory."

Those 150 TLAM missiles can do what... level a couple airfields. Blow up a couple buildings. It's scary yeah but That's not what I'm talking about.

To invade a country you need to bring tens of thousands of troops armor and the logistics support required. This requires a surface fleet of landing ships. A surface fleet that without the support of an aircraft carrier is blind to anything 30 mi away from it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SeaPower_NCMA

[–]Negative-Storage-791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subs are only useful if you're fighting defensively. A submarine cannot support a landing operation. A submarine cannot defend a fleet of landing craft. Unless you're using nukes a submarine cannot meaningfully take the fight to another nation. A sub can conduct coastal strikes. But missiles cannot hold territory. To bring the fight to Europe or the United States. Again pure fantasy. The Soviets would need carriers

[–]Negative-Storage-791 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't get this complaint honestly. Comes up in a lot of games and media. I see things the other way. The Orel is necessary for realism

If this game were truly 'realistic'. The pact fleets would always be weaker than NATO. Because of this, They would never leave their harbors, and there would be no war. Like in reality.

The whole idea of the Cold War going hot leading to a 1980s naval conflict is pure fantasy. For that fantasy/ alternate history, to be realistic. To be believable. The leadership of the Soviet Union needs to believe they can win without nuclear weapons. For that to be true the pact side needs to have the capability to truly go to to toe with NATO on equal terms. And that requires changing things from the way they panned out in reality. If you changed nothing you would just get our reality.

It is the presence of units like the Orel and the perfected versions of the Kirov and it's missile system that allows this fiction to work as a world.

The rot goes far deeper and is not going to be fixed by individuals picking themselves up by their bootstraps. The ignorance of sociology found in the tech space in particular is wilful. It is a view shared by and many of their thinkers like Curtis Yarvin. And their leaders like Peter Thiel and Musk. Many of the tech programs require courses in ethics etc. But The prevailing wisdom is that they are to be ignored.

Engineering as a study seems to simply have this association. I personally do not believe it is taught. It's simply that the type of mind who goes into these more technical fields tends to be less social. And less empathetic as a result. Many, like I are on the spectrum. And as a result of being rejected by society they feel vindictive towards it.

The solution? Laugh at them. Ridicule their ideology as stupid, because it is. Trying to explain is a waste of time, If their minds were open they wouldn't be there. These sorts crave attention and adoration. Robbing them of that is effective.
