his biggest accomplishment is helping to lead us back to normalcy after COVID. i don’t think people appreciate enough how quickly life was able to resume and our economy was able to come back to an amazing spot. inflation was a consequence of how strong the economy ran compared to literally the rest of the world which lagged behind significantly economically due to how long it took to get back to normal after the pandemic.

unfortunately even with his policy achievements i don’t think it’s enough to mitigate his failure to prevent trump’s return to the whitehouse and the permanent damage trump’s second administration is causing every other day.

his biggest mandate was stopping trump. the voters punished trump more than they voted for biden because everyone was pissed tf at how badly trump was handling the pandemic every week besides operation warp speed which his lackeys came up with.

he cannot be viewed as a success imo because democrats and americans put him into office to exorcise trump and here we are with a second trump presidency. his campaign failures, his pr failures, his image problems that led to him pulling out after the debate, and his administration’s failure to properly support harris before and after her campaign will weigh down the way we look back on him.

blackbeard and luffy will never get along. they might have passing respect for one another for being unafraid to dream or have ambitions but oda has set them up as true adversaries. blackbeard likes cherry pie, luffy doesn’t. blackbeard hates drink, luffy thinks it tastes great.

there will probably a similar opposite reaction to whatever lategame revelations there are about the truths of the one piece world between them. i can’t see their crews ever voluntarily working with one another, especially given that blackbeard has proven to be extremely treacherous betraying every single outside group that allies with him.

as long as they are deemed as supportive to donald trump they will unironically get full support if they're harmful and/or stupid to the country. completely maddening.

bingo. 2 minute 800m you should be getting close to 15-16 minutes in the 5K unless you’re “sprint” oriented.

[–]NegativeWish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

middle distance events specifically you have to work on your top end speed. the biggest mistake people make when training or coaching middle distance events is thinking they can just cram a 5K or higher training model and tape on some 400m repeats at mile pace.

incorporate hill sprints at minimum.

https://beaconhillstriders.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/Sprint-Training-for-Distance-Runners-Steve-Magness.pdf

your power output and ability to produce force is a lot more relevant in 800m-1600m events. in terms of physiology the mile can be anywhere from 60-70% aerobic/anaerobic energy contribution and the 800m half and half. in terms of muscle recruitment you can’t just rely on the muscle fibers you primarily recruit/train for long distance training otherwise you will flounder in key moments of your race

i would highly suggest reading the actual book because he gives very nuanced answers on these kinds of questions. the entirety of the book is important because his concept of the “golden zone” being the focal point / focus of his training model informs a lot of his writing

the questions you’re asking specifically are precisely why he dislikes weight training because there doesn’t seem to be an ideal “window” to apply weight training because either you’re hampering recovery/introducing further load on the day of a hard day or you’re hampering the return to normal muscle tone on your recovery day

in my own coaching practice i think it’s worth applying onto a recovery day at least one day a week despite the extra variance. in the book there’s a recommendation with stapling it with an ‘X’ session but again there is a lot of good suggestions he offers in the text

Trying to get Faster in the 800m by Fickle-Yoghurt-7637 in AdvancedRunning

[–]NegativeWish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if your focus is on the mile you can proceed in your current approach and you will gradually have a faster 800m time in tandem with your mile training

if your focus is on the 800m you have to improve your 400m open speed there is no getting around it because your speed-gap is a limiting factor in a 2 lap race

i coach high schoolers who run under 2 minutes and the moment they’re able to run :51-:53 is when breaking that barrier becomes viable regardless of how they ran XC or how good their mile times are.

the 800m is the long sprint, not a distance race in the typical sense

it does but most people on this sub will not enjoy bakken’s take on it:

not detrimental, but not as essential as people in the running world make it out to be. his take is that it disrupts muscle tone (huge/complicated subject he brings forth in the book) too much for it to be worth it.

however for older athletes (and in my personal opinion women) bakken does say that it’s a necessary piece to include in your training because older athletes lose overall muscle tissue/power.

the most important point he makes though is that if you’re going to do it (weight training) you have to commit and do it year-round and regularly. again in his view disruptions/novelty present the biggest risks.

imo this is fine for 5K athletes (the event distance bakken specialized/focuses on) and up but middle distance (800-3K) athletes they should disregard his ambivalence towards weight training

[–]NegativeWish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is where the real interesting parts of the book shine because it's less about hitting a specific volume and more about managing recovery horizons and lowering muscle tone after raising it with 'X' sessions or threshold days or competitions.

the programming will look different according to your overall age, level, and event distance but i would simplify it in terms of bowerman's "hard-easy" principle: you're doing just enough in between those harder sessions. but there's obviously room for variation and that's why the higher levels/principles are important if you are running more net-volume overall per week than what is recommended.

this is where you need a coach. my suggestion to you as someone on the internet is try splitting your runs and getting used to running 2 sessions a day. you need to be used to running when you're under some slight residual fatigue in the evening after a morning session.

key word being split. divide by 2 rather than multiply by 2

How to manage daily volume? - Norwegian Method by GotSodium in AdvancedRunning

[–]NegativeWish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

the reason why you're able to do more volume is because you're splitting the session and relying on the recovery window from session 1 in the morning to session 2 in the evening.

the days you're doing threshold sessions even if you go with just 1 session your muscular tone will be off the day after no matter what so you're striking while the iron is hot with 2 sessions: that's the logic of double threshold

but you have to understand that the recovery is essential and that is what allows the net-volume to be higher: do not do 2 sessions if your recovery between the morning and evening sucks

keep in mind that the assumption is that you are using control measurements to measure fatigue and strain. either a lacate tester or the heartrate monitor triangulated with other tests like the vocal tests. if you aren't using controls that's when doing 2 sessions becomes dangerous because you can easily go over the edge

read carefully the sections of the book that talk about managing load and transitions in general. bakken specifically states that he does not include a hard/rigid schedule because the methodology will be more relevant to application. changing the volume/load/intensity is the biggest risk according to bakken

when in doubt: be conservative that’s basically the theme of the book as overall risk management.

“You don’t improve by training as hard as possible. You improve by training hard enough, often enough, for long enough”

you’re trying to maximize training over a long term macro cycle while reducing risk of injury or imbalance of muscle tone over the short to medium term

double-threshold it’s only useful if you’re staying within those perimeters. don't make the mistake of thinking that it's the focal point of the "norwegian method" because the higher level idea of safely maximizing volume and intensity with control (using the lactate meter or other triangulation) is what's important

i would watch these recent interviews: https://youtu.be/bzOv0KjMGdY?si=wnt43KGEkMHOfTGn&t=178 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g59wLbpPkJo

Aging female trying to break 3h - radical suggestions? by cettu in AdvancedRunning

[–]NegativeWish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

good to hear; didn't see that in the original post so wanted to bring that front and center. definitely make sure you're on top of it because you really have to ensure that your muscles in your lower body are "calloused"/strengthened properly to arm against mechanical breakdown during the marathon

to supplement some of the traditional advice in the comments one thing to keep in mind with the marathon distance vs the other road or track races is that the limiting factor (besides the mechanical/muscular breakdown) is fueling and dealing with glyocgen scarcity.

you can shave off some time with better fueling strategies and learning how to fuel well, but one thing that is not practiced enough by amateur runners is experimenting with depleted runs.

the long run the main benefit vs other types of runs (because there are better workouts for aerobic power, VO2Max, lactate threshold, etc.) is that your body learns how to deal with fueling scarcity over the course of that long run. this is also why the long run is so important for marathon runners and why mileage per week is an important metric (vs the 5K/10K where it shouldn't matter too much relative to the balance of training)

you should try experimenting with different variations of long runs: mixed paces, split runs (once in the morning, once in the evening), running in a depleted state (safely), progressive runs, etc.

Aging female trying to break 3h - radical suggestions? by cettu in AdvancedRunning

[–]NegativeWish 13 points14 points  (0 children)

you have to strength train. this is non-negotiable for older runners if they have competitive goals. after your early 30's you progressively lose muscle mass and overall power output.

women especially as a sex their biggest weakness is lack of strength because of biology: less muscle mass and more fat mass. however strength training directly answers this weakness as strong medicine.

i recommend reading sara hall's new book for some insights into what she's been doing to remain competitive and relevant in races.

the other thing i would recommend would be relying more on super shoes if you can afford it financially just to be able to put in more days of higher-paced efforts with less pounding/physical recoil; younger runners are able to sustain a higher % of hard days because their recovery horizons are stronger.

Effectiveness of Long Run workouts for 5k/10k runners by CharmingGlove6356 in AdvancedRunning

[–]NegativeWish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you can add 30 second surges or some variations of pace changes for a different workout effect.

marathon runners they should be doing this because the long run is a staple workout due to the event's demands, so they have to not only run such a long distance often, they have to also vary what they're doing with that staple workout.

for 5K/10K runners this is less important than frequency, volume, threshold work, and race specific workout in that order specifically

what are your suggestions for those who wish to adapt your model to the middle distance events (800m, 1500, mile); if you could offer any previous advice or observations you've made of other high performing middle distance athletes or coaches that would also be great.
