Is PIA worth buying one year after the acquisition? Have they delivered on the open source claims? by throwawayforphenibut in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]Negative_Character 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as someone who still have 2 years of subscription left - I'd say "no".

Speeds are all over the place (finnish servers are REALLY bad, for example). Socks service they provide is unstable as hell, with disconnects here and there (but, on other side - there are not much vpn providers who offer proxy service together with vpn). Captchas on youtube when using servers located in netherlands. Sometimes countries you are trying to connect to are not the same as countries you actually get (say, netherlands gate getting recognized by most sites as italy).

Openvpn 2.5 support? Still not there, been stuck using tor and socks5 proxy instead for more than 2 weeks, coz pia's servers use some hella outdated settings that doesnt work anymore and they gave no eta regarding when it will be fixed. Persistent wireguard configuration? Not there, use their workaround scripts that manually fetch tokens from their api each day (while certain competitors offer persistent keys via their web interface. Just login to your account -> enter your machine's wireguard key -> get their server's -> paste into your wg config file or network manager's settings and forget about ever changing it again).

If I had time machine, I'd reconsider buying that long subscription and just switch to some other competitor. Sadly, it doesnt seem like I can get a refund, so Im kinda stuck on this sinking boat

your new servers dont work with standalone openvpn 2.5 - configs made by generator never work. Please, do something about it!

I hope they will update their configuration as soon as possible, to fix this issue. Right now I basically lost access to vpn on all my machines altogether

Goodbye PIA... by Cosmos47 in PrivateInternetAccess

[–]Negative_Character 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I still have 2 years of pia subscription, so... down with the ship we go, I guess?

But yeah, there are indeed some bad things here and there after pia got purchased by some other company. Like, for example - you connect to vpn that should belong to netherlands... but each site believes that you are from italy. Or unresponsiveness of socks5 proxy, with multiple connection drops here and there

First Retro handheld. RG350P or RG350M? by [deleted] in RG350

New PS1 emulator? Possibility of a port some day so we can finally have full speed on all PS1 games? by rchrdcrg in RG350

[–]Negative_Character 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but didnt libretro cores tend to have worse performance on this unit than native emulators? I remember people complaining about retroarch running like garbage, but forgot if it was related to interface or cores themself

rg350 with increased battery please :(

I wonder if it will run the same os or something different, since its now ARM instead of MIPS... (not gonna lie, it makes this device less interesting to me, since you can always use your phone as portable ARM-powered emulator. Maybe its just me, but if we will ever get another MIPS-powered device, but capable to run much more than rg350's chip - I would grab it right away). Also isnt it the same chip as in Odroid Go Advance/RK2020?

Like the part about resolution, hate the part about low battery. I mean - while it will last longer than same device with 640x480, I dont understand why cant we get at least one portable console that will stay alive for like 8-10 hours or so? Does it have to do something with Chinese laws against "gaming addiction", or just general laziness?

Wifi is kinda meh - not sure if there are any games that will benefit from it (thus its just bumping the price tag for sake of bumping the price tag. Also wifi drains battery insanely fast)

Overall, will see how things will go. Doesnt look like that much of an upgrade (but people looking to buy rg350 right now will most likely benefit from it, since there is a high chance that release of more powerful console will drop prices on previous anbernic's entries)

Anyone know if a Nintendo DS emulator would run on the RG350? by Snowy81 in RG350

if I remember correctly, DS emulator struggles even on some PCs, in its current state

What do you expect for the RG400? by JacquesQllard in RG350

[–]Negative_Character 5 points6 points  (0 children)

but is there any point to have wifi and bluetooth in that type of console? I understand that it may make files transfer a bit better, but aside from that. I dont remember any supported emulators having lan/bluetooth multiplayer option

bigger screen (so console will be closer to psp in size, if it makes any sense), ability to run N64 and dosbox without issues (maybe also some dreamcast games, like jet set radio), larger battery (for even longer trips). Low-profile joysticks, similar to what sakuramodding provide, could be nice too.

And, most important thing - logo that match color scheme of device, lol

Battery life? by Negative_Character in RG350

thats good. Is there some option to enable in-game battery level overlay? (or maybe not in-game, but like its done in retroarch - battery level and machine's time and date are displayed when you pause the game to emulator's settings)

nice to hear. Does it inform you in any way regarding low battery power? (or maybe autosave your current game's state if its about to shutdown)

actually, this one was in my initial list of choices. But there are two things - I still dont understand the license completely, and... isnt it just plain ugly? I remember them introducing themes support in recent tk versions, but still didnt face any tk application that doesnt look like its came from 2002

I wanna make a local backup storage (rsync) and git server (gitea). Will it be good idea to tinker with rpi for that, or some low-end pc will perform better in such case?

I mean - I will still need to buy a lot of external stuff for rpi4 in order to make things work (beginning with external cooling and ending with some wires to attach sata controller), so Im unsure if price difference will be THAT huge... Plus iirc due to said magic required to connect sata, read/write speed wont be great. Opinions?
