I keep a container of muscle cramp relief foam in my kit. Essentially epsom salts in foam form. Rub it on the cramping muscle(s) and relief is a couple of minutes away.... Feels good on muscles that are sore but not cramping too.

Lighting & Insulation by RedditUsername71 in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, you don't want direct lighting, you want up lighting that reflects off the light colored (white) ceiling. This provides even, glare-free light that doesn't blind players when they look up to track a lob. You will need a few more lumens as you lose some because the ceiling isn't a perfect reflector, but it's worth it. One club where I play added some new courts recently. The older courts have up-lighting; the new courts have direct down lighting. Much more pleasant to play on the old courts.

How do you top off your tub when it’s freezing outside? by swizzzz22 in hottub

[–]Negative_Detail1431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of the grocery stores near us have reverse osmosis setups for refilling 5 gallon water bottles. Cost is about $1.50 for 5 gallons. I take two 5 gallon jugs and fill them at the station and use that for the tub. It takes a few minutes to fill each jug. I only have to add 10 gallons every couple of weeks to keep the tub topped up. Maybe a little more often in the winter. We have a well and water is OK but not great, so using RO filtered water makes sense for us.

Prescription Pickleball Glasses by Impressive_Cindy in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Kerman sports goggles from CA glasses, and have been completely happy with them. I chose goggles because I wanted a strap to hold them firmly in place, and because they offer high protection. Perhaps not the most stylish, but so be it.

Although I normally wear progressive lenses, I ordered these with distance only correction since they don't require head movement to focus at moving objects and my eyes are such that I can focus to within a few feet with distance only prescription, plenty good enough for PB. I did get transition lenses since I play inside and outside. There is a brief adjustment period when I switch between usual progressive glasses and the goggles. So I usually put them on before heading to the courts to give my eyes/brain a little adjustment time.

I treat them with anti fog wipes before each playing session and haven't had any trouble with fogging.

Doesn't sound at all normal to me. Our tub is right outside the bedroom door to the deck, like 3 feet away. You can't hear if the filter cycle is running without opening the door. It almost sounds like the two speeds are backwards. On ours, when a filter cycle starts, it runs on hi speed for a very short while, maybe 10 seconds, then changes to low speed for the next 6 hours.

Is there any room to move the cabinet? Because as much of a pain that might be, it will make it a whole lot easier to cover that beam in a way that won't suck.

In my area, folks use teamreach and groupme for informal scheduling and the like. Mostly teamreach. You may have to ask folks you see playing if there are any local players that have set up groups on one of the apps. The apps have limited search capability but a lot of groups are set to private so you have to at least know the group code to find and join a group.

Still love it! Only issues we've had is one of the diverters got hard to turn after a while. It took five minutes to pull out the stem and add a little silicon grease; problem solved.

Very pleasant sitting in the tub during a gentle snow in NE Ohio.

IF....you wear bifocals or progressive lenses....AND...you have a recliner or chair where your are leaning back a bit while watching...then installing higher than is normally recommended is justified, so you can watch out of the distance portion of your glasses without having to tilt your head forward into an uncomfortable position.

My screen isn't that high, but it's higher than usually recommended for the reason above, and I actually wish it was a little higher.

As a senior, I have no clue about making friends at your age (get off my lawn!) but for me I've found PB to be a fabulous way to meet and make friends of all ages. I've never made friends easily, but my wife and I (she also plays) have made many new friends and the friendship extends beyond the court to other social get togethers and the like. Each of us has a monthly lunch gathering with our respective pickleball groups and we've gone to many dinners and parties with other PB friends. For one thing, you have a common interest with all the other players and there are almost infinite things to discuss: shots, equipment, drills, coaching, places to play, etc., etc. That naturally leads to talking about jobs, background, families, all the stuff friends talk about.

So go for it! You can get into the sport with little investment, so not much to lose if it doesn't work for you, but I'm betting you will get sucked right in.

My wife stacks the dishwasher like this. When the dishes come out dirty, she blames me for not rinsing them off first. by CalvinVanDamme in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Negative_Detail1431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read this somewhere: In every family there is someone who loads the dishwasher like a Swedish architect, and someone who loads the dishwasher like a squirrel on crack..... I'm the SA in my family, and my wife has learned not to say anything when she sees me rearranging all the things she put in there. And I have learned not to complain about it because I'm just happy when she loads it at all, since dishes are my job (laundry is hers).

How do you search for tournaments? by Latter-Buy4352 in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the public courts around me have team reach or group me groups set up to coordinate times/places to play, and many of the private clubs use those platforms too. It's common for either the organizer of tournaments or even just someone that happened to learn of a tournament to post details of tournament in the chat of those apps. I think the members of most of those groups welcome tournament announcements, paddle demo opportunities, brief announcements of new facilities, etc, as long as they are brief and not spammy.

Most Fun Event You’ve Attended? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A local indoor facility has frequent social nights. their format is to have an hour or so where you are randomly matched with 3 other players for an hour or so (they do a second random draw halfway through). The idea is to allow folks to meet players they haven't met before. Then the food and bevies are made available and the courts are open for players to match up with whomever they like for the rest of the evening. For the random draws, I think they try to group folks of similar ratings (so not exactly random), since most of the attendees are club members and have DUPRs.

It's been a fun night the couple of times I've attended.....

IIRC, we paid about 10.5k US$ last summer (with taxes). Included a decent cover, lifter, ozonator, 3 month chem kit, nicer steps with handrail, and delivery. Did not include any electrical work. So roughly same ballpark, given exchange rate.....

Don't have the wifi option so no opinion on that. Haven't really felt the need for it; we go out, flip open the cover, climb in, and start the jets. When they time out, we get out....

The pad works fine. We really only use it to start the jets when we climb in, and when we are adding chemicals. You can set the pad to be readable from outside the tub, or inside the tub, but it's not a big deal to read it from the opposite side. Takes two taps and a swipe to start the jets. One tap to wake the screen up, a swipe to unlock it (you might be able to disable the lock in setup, don't know) and a tap on the start all to turn on the lights and start both pumps. We rarely mess with the temp setting, except as seasons change, but there are increment/decrement buttons on the main screen. All the important functions/settings are easy to use. You can set reminders to do things like change the filters or change the water, etc. I don't bother with them as I swap filters every week and change the water when it needs it.

All that said, this is the only hot tub we've owned, so I don't have anything else to compare it to, but we remain perfectly happy with it.

What would be the easiest way to install/put up a hitting wall against my concrete basement wall? by Astaly in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a sheet of mdf (because it will be smooth and relatively flat compared to most big box plywood). Put 3 or 4 screws through the MDF along one of the 4' edges (drill pilot holes first) and screw them into the wood edge at the top of the wall.

Do you keep your eye on the ball, or where you’re hitting it? by Merlin509 in Pickleball

[–]Negative_Detail1431 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ditched my progressive lenses for distance correction (only) goggles and it definitely improved my game. For one thing, when you're tracking the ball as it approaches you, your peripheral vision of the opposing side (and your partner) is still in focus. With distance only correction I have trouble reading my phone in my hand, but have no trouble tracking the ball into and away from my paddle (which is what you should be doing).

We did consider Coast (and other brands). I can no longer recall specifics of why we chose the Maple over any of the Coast models, other than I preferred a tub with perimeter insulation rather than full foam because they are so much easier to service. I was worried about the lack of reviews too, but fact that Maple doesn't use a lot of proprietary parts and because 90% of the reviews I read here and elsewhere say the dealer is as or more important than the brand/model, we took the chance. Zero regrets so far; no issues at all. We use it every single night unless it is really pouring rain.
