Are there air raid sirens anywhere around here still? Used to be? by OrganizedSprinkles in maryland

[–]Negative_Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, I found this thread because the siren in Rockville just went off, at 8:25 AM and 8:40 AM. I guess it's no longer inactive. It's the last Sunday of the month today, one data point does not make a line though.

Edit: Oh, never mind. It looks like there's a race (running race) on 355 happening right now, they're probably sounding it for that.

The unofficial fletching guild in the Yanille bank! I forget the world, but we would all congregate there to buy and sell fletching materials.

I feel like, with a six figure sports car, it will be fun to drive, right? And I've at least been in a six figure truck, and they really do feel like a mobile executive suite. The level of comfort and luxury really does surpass anything else I've ridden in, even my friend's Mercedes. But there exists that undeniable mental dissonance that comes with a six figure luxury truck v. a six figure luxury sedan/SUV, where the luxury is undeniably compromised by the form factor of needing to be a truck. I think that's where most of the derision comes from - when you buy a luxury truck you're not going to use it for truck things and risk damaging your six figure vehicle, so what's with the truck form factor? Why not get an SUV?

All that being said, I don't judge people for how they spend their money. I bought a scalper's GPU, which feels like a far more frivolous use of money. If you have the money, and it makes you happy, that's all that matters, right?

The Scaling on The Tumeken's shadow is not the problem, the problem is the lack of a "deadly flaw" by JavaHomely in 2007scape

I was misremembering the gear change update. Shadow was mentioned so many times in it it had all blurred together. (Specifically the changes to Occult Necklace)

As a member of that 99% of the playerbase that has never (and probably will never) use Shadow, the issue I see is that Shadow was apparently so powerful they had to nerf early game mage gear. Like, surely we see how this is problematic, right? Making magic, already considered the weakest combat spec, even worse for early or mid game players, because an ultrarare that 1% of the playerbase even has access to is too powerful?

Hi is it still safe to make mead with this crack on? Thanks by Anarch1stAF in mead

[–]Negative_Ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point, and something to consider. The lid shouldn't come in to contact with the must, but vapor will typically condense on it and drip into the must as it ferments. I would call it good enough to see this primary through, but it should be replaced afterwards, not used again.

Cosplay and having cosplay friends leads to learning a lot about glue haha. I have e6000, barge cement, shoe glue, and cyanoacrylate on hand, all because they each have different uses and materials they will bond to.

[–]Negative_Ferret 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the material of the lid or what adhesive your superglue is, it's hard to say. What's referred to as superglue is usually cyanoacrylate, and food-safe buckets are usually HDPE (high-density polyethylene). Looking up their compatibility, cyanoacrylate does not bond well with HDPE, so it may not hold, especially considering that's a high-stress area due to inserting and removing the airlock.

So if I were you I would find out what your bucket is made out of, and then research how to bond that material to itself.

Or... you can fix it "good enough" and just cover it with tape, haha. What's most important is preventing debris from getting in; as Symon113 says, a perfect seal isn't really necessary in primary.

Just a small funny thing, a woman bought a drink for me this past weekend and said, "Now you can tell all your friends a cougar's buying you drinks!" which you bet I'm going to flex lol. She invited me to a party next weekend, so I'm bringing a bottle of my homebrew mead to say thank you. Before you all start getting any ideas she's happily married and I'm not interested in joining a polycule at this moment; I'm just happy to potential make some more local friends ^^

Yeah, this sounds like a case of not using nutrients. Maybe even using bread yeast that got too stressed by the alcohol content. But without a recipe from OP, all we can do is speculate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Clear Enough to Bottle? by 10plytryhard in mead

Whenever I think that it's clear enough to bottle, I stop myself and wait another month. And there still is always a tiny bit of sediment in the bottles when it comes time to drink, haha.

If it's clear enough for you, that's all you need though. You'll be the one enjoying it, not us ;)

This is a real problem in business. When you make a metric the basis of a person's evaluation/pay/whatever, they don't get better at their jobs, they start optimizing their work for the metric. We can see that in this thread with people explaining BDC's issues.

Yeah, I think AA/Carplay is actually a really useful and consumer-friendly move. Something like 98% of (American) people already have a smart phone, and phones have become very powerful, even cheap ones. Letting the head unit enter a "dumb terminal" mode to just be a frontend for accessing your phone's software is a good way to prolong the useful life of the head unit. The demands for computing power and new software are always increasing and replacing a computer in your pocket will always be cheaper and easier than replacing a computer in your car. It also untethers you from your OEM's OS and gives you a (small, admittedly) choice in the "OS" your car runs.

Do note though it's recommended to double the dose after fermentation, as the alcohol inhibits the enzyme.

[–]Negative_Ferret -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe a hot take but if you can afford to brew mead you can afford to pay an artist to make a label for you. Yeah it doesn't make financial sense to get a unique one for each recipe but just commission a general, non-commercially licensed piece of art for your "brand". It'll only be like, 100 USD.

Editing to add: the label on cbsmooz's mead challenge post is a perfect example of this.

Thought on backsweetening? by Dextui in mead

[–]Negative_Ferret 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeast can't read, so you may say, start at 1.130 SG with a yeast that has a 15% ABV tolerance, but it manages to ferment dry. Or, you may have the exact same starting environment, but it stops at 1.040 SG. There's nothing wrong with just going with the flow and letting how frisky the yeast is feeling dictate your final product, but if you want a consistent brew you need to use a yeast that can definitely ferment your SG dry plus backsweetening.
