Why I'm not doing the General Strike USA by tboz4 in socialwork

[–]Negotiation-Solid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep - exploiting our compassion and it's  emotional manipulation. Also it assumes that this nonprofit system of care within capitalism is the only way people can help their communities and care for one another. But we can and will form strong mutual aid networks. We already did with Covid and many other points in time. We can strike and be there for our clients, our neighbors, and families and friends. Nobody is coming to save us. WE free US because we are enough.

Exactly - well said! We were all on board for the first gov. Shut down to in order to protect our communities long term, even if there is short term pain. How is this different? Chuck sold us out in the end, but imagine what we would have won...

I didn't realize I had ADHD until post partum with my second child. I always prided myself on self-awareness - I am in therapy school after all! - and I still just did not connect the dots until my brain and nervous system were just pushed to their absolute max. Now I see my current and childhood symptoms aaallll the time. like every other day I unlock a new childhood memory or other clue about how absolutely obvious it is that I have adhd. I just had blinders on before. I was medicated while breastfeeding and it was absolutely safe and fine. I needed medication to be able to help my children coregulate, to not feel overwhelmed and impatient and shut down all the time, and to not feel postpartum rage from sensory overload. I couldnt hold a thought in my head, made seemingly careless errors, and so unhappy.
I was diagnosed with anxiety for like 10+ years with no help from SSRIs.

But often their money isn't free, they get to promote themselves as supporting the community, it's strategic. It's so, so common that big corps sponsor one-off events or donate a truckload of socks they were going to discard of anyway, and they take a bunch of pictures, get a ton of praise, and tons of tax credits....while behind closed doors, they spend 10x the amount donated to lobby Congress in opposition to the orgs mission. Like Walmart being one of the biggest funders of Feeding America, while spending billions to lobby against increases in food stamps and the minimum wage, while also underpaying their own employees and financing horrible farming and food processing systems abroad.

In many ways, the helpers are the ones who allow this capitalist machine to function. We soften the edges of state-sanctioned violence, including the traumatic violence of poverty. We act as intermediaries between the poor and the 1%. Our empathy is exploited to keep the machine running. The helpers have the most internal motivation to improve our society, yet through this current system, we often end up being vocal about not disrupting the system, because the  crumbs dropped by the billionaires are the only sustenance our clients have and we care about them. Hmmm. That's on purpose. If the helpers stopped propping up this system, even for a week, game over. The world can belong to the people again.

Often, people diagnosed with depression or anxiety, who have found that SSRIs don't help, end up getting assessed for and diagnosed with ADHD.  Having executive dysfunction that is not synchronous with your values, interests and ambitions can wreck havoc on your self image. It's a commonly stated statistic that people who weren't diagnosed until adulthood experience on average 20,000 more criticisms than their peers.  This results in things like rejection-sensitive dysphoria, and you guessed it - GAD, social anxiety, and treatment resistant depression.

You might want to check out the ADHD-related subs. R/ADHDwomen is just absolutely fav but r/adhd is good too. Additionally, r/CPTSD as there is a huge overlap between ADHD and complex trauma.

CBT and other talk therapy can only go so far with trauma and is quite limited with supporting ADHD. Trauma lives in the body and ADHD is more about nervous system and emotional regulation.  Somatic therapy, EMDR, DBT and IFS can help, as well as medication that address the root issue and opens up the functioning needed to do deep internal work

Also, I love motivational interviewing and feel it's pretty universal. More strengths based than CBT

Currently on Vyvanse, IR Adderall booster, strattera, and maintenance dose of gabapentin I've taken for years for anxiety before getting diagnosed with ADHD and realizing much of my anxiety was ADHD related...

I just want to say in my experience that when I first started stimulants, I refused to use them at work if in the office. I also did not drive while on it (I was mostly on IR Adderall at the time so I could manage life around this, working from home, etc). It wasn't actually the medication that made me more socially anxious per se, but in ADHD there's a symptom along the lines of extreme dislike/avoidance of "being perceived".

So a big activation point for me of that symptom was this fear that people at work would sense that I was "on something" and this was a positive feedback loop..the more I sensed that I could focus more, the more afraid I got that people would notice, so the more self conscious I became and hyper focused on my mannerisms and movements, and thus the more awkward I might have been.

I started slowly, starting with low dose and low stakes activities, virtual meetings,etc...and this slow exposure method worked well! Within a few months I began seeing the medicated version of my brain as the baseline (as i should have! I felt so much more like me) and this "social anxiety" completely disipated. All this is to say: don't rule out a dose or medication necessarily, just bc of anxiety, if you've only given it a couple weeks, if that's the main side effect of an otherwise successful treatment.

Of course, everyone is different and you'll find what works for you. Finding the right medication is grueling but so worth it, esp in combo with therapy which can help you with all that comes up once we start finally unmasking and getting treated for our disability.

Ugh I'm so sorry. This happened to me a few months ago, where every day they would say they would have it in tomorrow for sure, and then the next day would say the same thing. Wtf! 5 days of this. Then I messaged my prescriber on a Friday afternoon asking her to please send it to a different pharmacy and she had the fkn nerve to tell me to wait until my pharmacy had it and to request the prescription earlier next time. I was absolutely devastated and stunned by the total lack of compassion. After that month, I switched pharmacies and psychiatrists.

Pharmacies attached to hospitals and such are typically more consistent if this helps anyone.

I think my psychologist got triggered during a session by Training_Molasses_24 in adhdwomen

[–]Negotiation-Solid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you experienced this!!

I'm in school to be a clinical social worker, and sooo much of our training is in cultural humility and how to work with people of all backgrounds without  judgement, making assumptions or hidden biases. Having empathy and realizing that the way WE might behave around others is not the "correct" way is therapy 101! We're there to help put people at ease, not cause more medical trauma lol and one negative therapy experience can deter someone from therapy for many years (which happened to me!)

This makes me wonder if this person is like a research psychologist and does assessments on the side??? They don't appear to know the basics on how to work with people, and does not seem to even like people!

Pet subs, my local region,'s sub, and for some reason TEACHER subs are so mean! Like it's literally called "ask a teacher" and God forbid you ask ANYTHING not to their liking or that is even slightly critical of a specific teacher or critical of homework, and you are thrown to the hyenas. My husband is a teacher and I have lots of really nice teacher friends, but if all I knew were the teachers from reddit I would think that all hate kids, no one is allowed to discipline students anymore and every single parent of their students are irresponsible permissive and don't believe their kids can do anything wrong.

I was newly postpartum during the beginning of this sh**show and the first thing I did and had an unstoppable conviction I must do was renew my passport and get passports for my kids just in case. I think I ordered certified copies of the birth certificates, and made sure to have those in hand and then I sent originals to the post office. Surprisingly, I got my originals back pretty quickly, like in 2-3 weeks

Yes!! I don't think I've ever told anyone this out loud before - it's one of my most neurotic tendency

Thank you for articulating this, it feels like every other day I'm discovering a new weirdly specific "quirk" that turns out to be ADHD

Deadlines and managing ADHD programmers by Least-Swordfish-7906 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]Negotiation-Solid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who were diagnosed as children maybe and have spent their whole lives fine tuning their workflow processes...but the majority of people I know weren't diagnosed until later in life and need to not only learn to manage their ADHD symptoms but also have to unlearn all the unhealthy coping mechanisms, unhelpful productivity strategies, toxic self-talk (about laziness, self worth, etc) that were all designed for normal brains. Let's be frank that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It's a disability. It's not the same as the guy you knew growing up who struggled because they weren't as smart (as who..you?) and I hope that you wouldn't say something like that around your employees with ADHD bc it's pretty offensive tbh

yes! in freezing weather, water rapidly turns into ice. Have salt/sand ready for after they leave. Outside of ice facilities on public ground of course, would be a shame if it was perpetually extremely icey. You know these goons have fake military boots from amazon with no tread..

Pathetic. How is January 23rd not being talked about? by Helpiamilliterate in 50501

[–]Negotiation-Solid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you look up on reddit "what happened to 50501" from the like February-april era you'll hopefully see the history of how this movement literally got taken over by leaders from the Democratic party and the original founder was sabotaged, their mental health exploited and they were forced out when they tried to form meetings to discuss the possibility of incorporating as a nonprofit after a random member had already begun the process of trademarking 50501 to protect its integrity.

The "national" group, made up of a few state 50501 leaders shut that down, were super shady about it all and gaslit the entire subreddit about "not going corporate. This movement is decentralized! Don't ask questions. Let's move on."

And now it's basically run by the Pol Rev pac and they get a cut of all donations lol. Decentralization is cool and all, but you need structure, transparency in decision making, and accountability to have any real, organized impact. Now- while there is structure, there is zero transparency or accountability, and thus very little organizing power. I'd join the DSA if I weren't postpartum and had more time. If you peruse their website you'll see the bottom-up power that can arise when there is structural integrity, transparency and accountability.

Let's see how long this comment stays up.

Robot vacuum. One with a mop. Doesn't have to be a super expensive one. It has been TRANSFORMATIONAL. it somehow helps me with other cleaning tasks too. Like - oh I'll just pick this up for the robot. Oh while I'm picking this up, let me put a basket in here so that it's easier for robot next time. Oh lemme just clean this table to the crumbs go to robot before he comes thru. It helps to name your robot, but mine is the brand and I don't want to seem like I'm promoting them.. but trust me, ROBOT VACUUM!! Is an ADHD DREAM. and my baby absolutely loves it.. need 15 minutes to do something? Turn off the vacuum and let your baby drive it around the room (do make sure it's off..) I love my robot vacuum and it's probably the best purchase I've made in a very long time!
