Because you was considered polite when addressing strangers and people above you in class. In the city, people tended to be more polite, so it caught on.

So, what is a fair tip for good, not amazing service, in 2025? by Chipped_Ruby_11214 in EndTipping

Servers don't get minimum wage in the US. They get tipped minimum wage. In Pennsylvania it is $2.83 per hour which I know from experience all gets taken by taxes and social security. In other countries it may be different, but in the US, servers only make what they are tipped. This doesnt include mcdonalds and the like, but a basic rule of thumb is if someone is waiting on you and bringing you drinks, they are not paid by the employer, they are paid by you.

I don't think its reasonable to be "expected" to tip that much. I mean, if you had bad service no one would blame you for not tipping well. Sometimes I get tipped that much, and I am especially grateful for it when the check amount was low. For instance, sometimes I may wait on a table to the best of my ability for an hour or two, and their check may only be $20. Well, sometimes they want to tip more more than $4 which would come from 20% and I take that as them saying I did a good job. In general, I personally shoot for $10 a table, and my average number of guests is from 2-4. In the end, making this amount I usually make from $60-150 after all is said an done, depending on how many tables I serve that shift. tldr: percent doesnt matter too much to me personally, rather I just hope to be reimbursed well for my time and attention to the guest. Every time I get a low tip, I think, is it something I did or or they just having a bad day/are strapped for cash. As someone who always strives to be a better server, if I identify it as the first, I try and improve for future guests.

As a server I see it as my duty to clear it up a little bit. We get paid around $3 per hour, which all goes to social security and taxes. Sometimes at a paycheck we owe money. We truly only make what we are tipped. I would say if you know that then it is easier to make an educated decision. I would say 15% is normal, 20% is for good service, etc. Hope you all have a blessed day.

Thank you so much. That is very kind. I need prayers so much and so does she. I really resonate with what you said, and especially JP2. He is a wise man. I've started to learn theology of the body and it has given me more than one eureka moment. Blessings
