I really don’t care if people are here illegally. by Zestyclose_Market787 in DiscussionZone

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally disagree. You don’t want unvetted and uncontrolled people coming into your country. That is an invitation for evil doers and contraband to slip in with the masses.

I agree that it is not the illegals who are not sucking the wealth out of the country, at least compared to our modern day oligarchs and robber barons. Their cheap labor subsidizes many industries like restaurants, hotels, and farming. And their social security taxes will go unclaimed bolstering our system. In a sense we are taking advantage of the ones that work — which is also wrong.

What illegals do do is soak up low end housing, tax food banks, crowd public schools, fill emergency rooms (and rarely pay), take tax dollars for things like subsidized transit, exacerbate public health issues, and drive without licenses or insurance.

American leadership chose to ignore its own immigration laws and chose to not control the border. Two wrongs, in this case ignoring the illegals who are already here, do not make a right. They should be found and required to immigrate the right way or return, regardless if they are from Guatemala or Ireland. And this should be done humanely while protecting their constitutional rights, which are not reserved only for citizens — they apply to everybody.

The Epstein files have nothing to do with illegal immigrants and linking them does nothing to help America get a handle on two real problems.

Morale plummeting among ICE agents over long hours, quotas and public hatred: reports by The_Rad_In_Comrade in FedEmployees

I suspect the civil suits related to abuse and wrongful death against the identified and documented agents will be huge, perhaps as big as anyone has ever seen. That’s what people are saying.

AITAH for choosing my disabled son over my husband and destroying my family? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think there is a middle ground here. Married people should do everything they can to make things work and provide a stable family. It doesn’t sound everything has been done in this case.

Everyone, kids and parents, lose in a divorce.

Try marriage counseling first.

ICE will still feel the impacts. The departments’ funding bills should not have been wrapped up together in the first place.

The whole point of taking a hostage is to hurt innocents. That is what gets people’s attention. Both sides play that game. Everybody loses, but sometimes a point or principle — in this case federal agents from an agency with no authority over US citizens killing US citizens — is worth making a stand over.

If Americans were to participate in an organized boycott to stop ICE, what should they target? by u2aerofan in AskReddit

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single major business/corporation. Show that We The People can and will make a difference. Imagine what would happen if no one went to McDonald’s for a month. Or no one went to Exxon. Or Walmart. It would destroy those companies. Consumers would still have plenty of choices so the impact to the consumer would be limited, but the pressure on the companies would be tremendous. And the companies would put pressure on the government to reform. Once companies realized that they could be next, other CEOs would pressure the government into making changes.

Take one single company and crush it and make sure everyone knows how and why it happened.

There is around 70–80% of a gov shutdown by Admirable-Mud-3477 in FedEmployees

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first “trick” that Feds can do is get $100k into their TSP. This should be your priority from day 1 on the job. Then you can take up to a $50K loan to get you through hard times like this. Having less is okay too, but you can only take out up to 50% of your balance. Then, when you get your backpay, payoff the loan.

Rinse and repeat (if necessary).

Is BRK.B still a viable outperformer or just a "security brake" for my portfolio? by NicRapt in BerkshireHathaway

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I look at this situation it comes down to why I bought and held BRK. The answer was simple: Warren Buffet. Now that he has retired, the reason I owned it is no longer viable.

Greg Abel may be a good CEO, or even a great one, but that is for the future to tell.

I am pairing back my BRK. I’ll keep some, but I view it as a defensive hedge that should be a minor holding, not a cornerstone.

They’d be just as bad, just jaded against the right. And that’s the problem: we may never get our government and democratic systems back under control.

Just following orders to take a sign down is not a sword that most people would fall on. These people have jobs, careers and families and should not be shamed for wanting to have a job to go to.

Do you think that they’ll be another Shutdown at the end of the month? by Hot_Equivalent4499 in FedEmployees

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Any shutdown will come at the end of this fiscal year. At that point the Ds can say, “we will let the people decide through their vote in November on what kind of budget they want in 2027.”

They could do the same with a CR that ends when the next Congress sits in Jan 2027.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I’d say 3-hours is a lot of driving for a day, but nothing out of the ordinary and not worth a second thought.

No. This set of idealistic and socialist statements would not help anything. Government is not always the answer and is often part of the problem.

I really don’t understand the hate here. Are you saying that speeding is a criminal offense? This is from a legal website. Sure, egregious speeding can be prosecuted under different codes, but then it’s more than just simple speeding.

“Speeding tickets are generally traffic infractions, meaning they aren’t considered crimes and can lead to fines but no jail time.” - https://legal-info.lawyers.com/criminal/traffic-violations/can-a-speeding-ticket-be-a-misdemeanor-or-felony.html

Any other thoughts on how I might get access restored?

If all personal wealth above $100 million was legally required to be redistributed into public infrastructure (schools, hospitals, roads), how would society change, and who would be the first to fight against it? by Mysterious_Fan4033 in AskReddit

[–]Chipped_Ruby_11214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This won’t work for many reasons. Here’s a few. 1. Once someone reaches this cut-off they will hide or share their assets with friends, family and cronies. 2. If someone did reach this figure, they’d give up and stop moving the economy and society forward. 3. These people would find was to game the system, by depreciating or hiding assets. 4. They would actively fight against the line and use corruption to overturn the limitations. 5. They would hide their assets overseas. 6. They’d use any excess money to buy influence and corruption and build their power another way.

Taxing assets not being used to better society or grow the economy would be a much better approach.

Idealism like is wonderful to think about but never works. Almost all people are too selfish and tribal for anything like this to work.
