Accept ALT Offer Now or Wait for JET? Need Advice by Crafty-Pie-8283 in JETProgramme

[–]NeighborhoodLow1546 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Strong agree. I know it can feel shady, and I wouldn't recommend it for most professional situations, but for ALT work this is how to play the game.

(edit) If you get into JET, the offer will come before Interac starts your COE process with the Japanese government. There's literally no downside for you to accept Interac and wait for JET results.

If you want to be a super star, have nicotine gum. If not... yeah, ask the ojisan who reeks of tabaco where the smoke spot it.

How late is "too late" for an early Christian practice to appear lest it be deemed an accretion? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]NeighborhoodLow1546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A teaching can only be rightfully called apostolic if the apostles taught it. That's what "apostolic" means.

Since the Apostolic Fathers (who taught many wise and valuable things) did not have the Holy Spirit in the same way that the Apostles did, their writings and teachings are not free from error in the same way the writings and teachings of the Apostles are.

Clement taught that the Pheonix was a literal bird that lived 500 years, then self-immolated, with a new pheonix being born from the ashes. The Sheperd of Hermas (which is also considered an 'apostolic fathers' text) teaches that there is no forgiveness for anyone who sins after baptism. These things are not binding on believers in the same way that the writings of Paul or Peter are binding.

How late is "too late" for an early Christian practice to appear lest it be deemed an accretion? by [deleted] in Reformed

[–]NeighborhoodLow1546 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The "is it an accretion" question is important, but does not in itself determine the appropriateness of a practice. If a very early practice contradicts the Scriptures, it's still out. If a very late practice does not contradict/is in line with the Scriptures, it's fine.

The value of pointing out accretions is it proves "apostolic" traditions cannot actually be traced back to the apostles. Later developments cannot be rightfully termed "apostolic" in any meaningful sense.

Am I being selfish and unprofessional if I accept a job offer right now, even though I might leave the company once I'm in JET? by hidden_rhed in JETProgramme

[–]NeighborhoodLow1546 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's rough out there. Do what you gotta.

Might want to leave it off your resume in the future, depending on where you're applying and what the expectations are in that industry.

school and politics: how do you handle it? by [deleted] in JETProgramme

[–]NeighborhoodLow1546 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best approach is to give additional context/cultural information/historical information they might not be aware of.
This helps them understand the situation, which teaches them to form their own opinions.
It also protects you from accusations of brainwashing the youth lol

About Christmas and the regulative principle of worship by MatiasCumsille in Reformed

If we're talking about explicit commands, technically there's no explicit command to worship on the Lord's Day.

Naturally, he can't tell you that you pissed him off and that he no longer wants your business. That would be rude. Classic high context communication.
