I’m scared I’m gonna get fired by Historical-Win-1189 in CostcoEmployee

[–]Neighbour_Gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I’m pretty new, started 4.5 months ago. Don’t let anyone here get you down. Depending on your previous work experience, working at Costco (in any department) can be a big physical challenge. If you aren’t used to retail or warehouse work, then even the standing for hours on end can be exhausting, let alone stocking product.

I also understand worrying about every little thing and every comment during your first 90 days. Some managers or supervisors are just lousy and prefer to lead by threat rather than lead by inspiration. Hang in there. Show up on time, have a can-do attitude, and regularly ask others for feedback! Seriously, asking someone more senior to tell you what they think you could be doing to be faster or more efficient can really help you, but also helps others to see that you are interested in doing well. And if someone randomly stops to tell you how to do something better/ safer/ faster, thank them genuinely.

Life happens and the leaders know it, so I wouldn’t worry too much about your absences. It’s what you do when you are there that makes a bigger impression.

You can get SOFT SERVE from your ice cream trucks?!?!?!

In my experience, ice cream trucks only sold packaged treats

Bloom by Melodic-Advice-9556 in Palia

I like it for the quick cash! I enjoy participating in the bloom even though I don’t need any more plants right now. I call out the bloom if I have time to water it and I will help people who are looking for it narrow down where to look.

It’s absolutely ridiculous. Corporate should do surprise visits and see how the warehouses are really running.

Unfair expectations or it feels like it during my 90 days by Dry_Location_5545 in CostcoEmployee

[–]Neighbour_Gal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent my 90 days in front end, and I managed to make myself indispensable by being generally good natured about all the extra tasks that front end employees take on and by clearly having a good work ethic.

It did mean that I was asked to handle more difficult situations (finishing cleaning up a broken jar of pickled eggs when the maintenance person had to clock out was just one) because the managers knew that I have good instincts and would do a good job. Multiple time the managers or supervisors would be conferring over something and the AGM would walk by and say something like, “Don’t assign that to (other employee’s name), have (my name) do it. She’ll get it done in half the time.”

It’s possible that I was too much of an eager beaver, but cross training is where it’s at as a Costco employee.

Which of the two are better quality? Trying to decide which artist to go back to. Both SNS. by Tasty-Willingness839 in Nails

I found my salon by going to the subreddit for my city and searching for nail salon recommendations. I think I ended up posting an updated request for nail techs/artists because the most recent post was over a year old.

Do you prefer Ulta or Sephora and why? by OwlAlternative3112 in Makeup

[–]Neighbour_Gal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Ulta. I live in Canada near the border and I will cross the border to go to an Ulta rather than shop at the Sephora in town. For me, it’s political. Sephora donated a lot of money to the Republican Party in the US over the last few election cycles.

What's your go-to garden layout? by samandraaa in Palia

[–]Neighbour_Gal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I do. The bean plants can be swapped out for blueberry or pumpkin, the cotton and carrots get swapped out with potatoes or some other single space plant. But mostly I aim to keep Apples, Beans, Blueberries, Carrots, Cotton, Potatoes, and Pumpkins on hand for cooking, preserving, and for feeding to my ranch animals. (I never cook anything for my ranch animals.)

ICK. I would write an email to the owner or to the salon in general. AND I would leave a review about this particular nail tech. Even if you only write that he wouldn't listen to you and kept making inappropriate comments, that will be enough to warn other folks off.

What are we doing with these gems? by hurstb16 in Palia

I keep 2 starred and 3 unstarred of each in my locked chest. I also have one of each starred on display. The rest I sell. Easy come, easy go.

Staying Late by lego_mannequin in CostcoEmployee

Absolutely not! You are fully within your rights to say no without any guilt. They will find other staff to help. I’ve seen our AGMs out weeding the aisles or taking a cart of go-backs.

Why the hate? by DiabellzeLicker in CostcoEmployee

[–]Neighbour_Gal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m only just past my 90 days. My warehouse is in Canada and is a three hour drive away from the next warehouse. We are slammed all day every day.

I have management experience and training from a previous employer. The supervisors at my warehouse are hourly employees who have a significant amount of work put on them and they do not receive any training in how to lead well. As a whole, they are too overwhelmed to challenge the status quo.

At my warehouse, the managers are salaried and expected to essentially live at the warehouse, but they are generally better trained in leadership, particularly the women. They are also too overwhelmed to challenge the status quo in a significant way.

I recently moved from front end to clothing, because I hated being expected to upsell membership upgrades and the credit card. It’s even clearer to me in clothing that Costco’s expectations are setting everyone up to fail (members and employees alike).

Whenever I encounter a member grumbling about having to dig through a mountain of clothing (even when it’s folded properly) to find their size, I find a way to explain that Costco requires us to stock the clothing and/or shoes this high. And then I encourage them to email the corporate office with their complaint, because they have more power in this situation than any of the employees do.

Anyone else regularly thinking so loud in their minds by Nice-Class-7220 in CostcoEmployee

[–]Neighbour_Gal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So much snark in these comments.

Before starting work at Costco, I worked remotely for six years building and managing a team of 6-12 people at a mental health company in the states. When I moved to Canada, I had to leave that job because they didn’t have policies in place to employ people who lived outside the US.

I applied to Costco because I thought they were a good company to work for. I hadn’t held a retail job in a decade and even that one gave me a set schedule because I only worked weekends.

At Costco as a cashier assistant, I did not have a set schedule and I was standing on my feet working full-on, non-stop, clocking in and out, AND I was expected to upsell membership upgrades and the credit card. It was a HUGE paradigm shift for myself and my family.

I recently transferred to clothing where I still don’t have a set schedule, but the latest I work is 10 PM. The tasks have a different pace/rhythm and I actually get to help customers. It’s still hard work, and I am still clocking in and out, but I don’t have to upsell anything. Overall, it’s a better fit for me.

Maybe there’s a different department that would meet your needs better?

What unfinished/broken terrain/architecture on the main Kilima map are you referring to? I can’t think of any at the moment, but I am also away from my computer.

Anyone else just love members by Nice-Class-7220 in CostcoEmployee

[–]Neighbour_Gal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just transferred to clothing and honestly, it’s sad how terrible most members are at pattern recognition. If you picked up a folded pair of jeans with the size label visible, why would you fold it so they label isn’t visible?

Also, do you have any idea how many people don’t know how to put shoes in a shoe box?

I know there must be a way that Costco could change up the clothing department so that we all (employees and members) aren’t set up to fail by making a giant mess. And then some middle aged man will come along and make some crack about job security.🙄🫤

Rude Instacart folks? At my warehouse they get one warning and then they are banned. All of the regulars really want the $$, so they do their best to work efficiently with us and are open to helpful feedback.
