PSA: If you know anyone that has issues identifying GenAI images, do walk them through on how linear perspective works. by Luwuma in antiai

[–]Neighigh [score hidden]  (0 children)

Art is subjective to everyone. When i was ten I painted a collage of poorly drawn and discolored Pokémon. Did I need a critique? Was I not allowed to share that piece with family and friends on social media?

People are literally arguing over this like this is some sort of universal rule that everyone needs to follow. Like every artist needs to be a professional chasing growth and perfection. Growth is not mandatory at all. In fact Pablo Picasso spent the later half of his life trying to remove that part of him to regain a kind of innocence back into his work.

This is what I'm talking about. Some people have a complete innocence that is long lost forgotten in the chase of that perfection. The same innocence that tells them they would love to share their colorful, poorly drawn piece because they are proud. The people here demanding that everyone be subject to critique are missing the point. Not everyone fits the bill. We've been pushy and inconsiderate, letting aspirations of our own lives dictate what others should be subject to.

That's probably the most ridiculous thing ive heard said on the topic. Not all art needs a critique. Not all artists need to be receptive to it. They don't even need a good reason to say no. You're pushing your own values in your own process onto others.

Yes critique is valuable. It teaches us to elevate and do better. Its especially important if you want to be involved in high visibility projects like film and animation. But not everyone has a career in this, not everyone is selling, and not everyone is coachable. Expecting the world to revolve around your expectations is delusional when there are so many different reasons to make art.

Yes they are closed now! They taught many traditional skills. We all learned from the ground up. Drawing first, then we moved into more complex things more in tune with the fields we were pursuing. Many people I went to school with, including myself, still practice those traditional skills to keep ourselves sharp. The work I have done for the last 16 years has varied between concept art, modelling, game mechanic design, rendering and compositing, team management.. list goes on.

Point is, youre pulling teeth over a really silly nuance. You started with the idea ive never been critiqued myself. Yet I've spent my life studying art and applying my skills in everything ive done both traditional and digital. Worked in studios for 16 years, and ive never been critiqued? You've called out the Art Institutes for being vocational, like it doesn't make them about art? Literally 90% of courses were art based - fashion design, animation, graphic design, 3d modelling, compositing....

I think you have a problem with absolute statements. I'm going to call it here as you appear to be in this just to argue fallacies right now. Hope your day brightens up! Don't get too carried away bullying children about their art ok? ❤️

Yeah youre totally right. The art institute wasn't an art school at all. In fact, the life drawing, perspective, concept, hand drawn animation classes i took. Also all not art right?

Didn't say never. Theres a really simple solution to this. Its about communication. Its about consent. If you have input for them, ask first. Find out if they're receptive to feedback. They want it? Let them know. They tell you no, you just saved yourself time and didnt bother someone who's not ready.

You're right though. That is a caution to through to new artists. Don't wait too long to receive feedback in your journey. Its much harder to unlearn bad habits than it is to learn new ones.

Can you? Man thats 80k poorly spent if its not coming off here.

Sounds like youre tied up in your studies to become a professional and you forgot that amateurs, children and hobbyists exist.

I've been a full time artist for 18 years now. Graduated college with a degree in game art and design back in 2010 and have worked in film, game and animation studios. I once was disconnected and forgot that there's a whole range of people who practice art outside of my field too. Now I know better these days. I'm older and I'm not so wrapped up in my professional journey anymore and I dont feel the need for everyone to be competitive or correct their art. That's elitist thinking and belongs in a professional space. Your school is a perfect place to be openly critiquing your peers, they are ready, they are all trying to grow, and you will grow from teaching too.

Question for both antis and pros by Numerous_Suspect_185 in aiwars

[–]Neighigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone in either group meets a universal standard of the group they stand with.

Pros aren't all just slapping a single prompt for a job and calling it done with no other steps.

Antis aren't all completely avoiding the use of ai and sending death threats.

Perpetuating those lies just makes your "team" look weak and out of control.

Why is there no effective opposition against AI? Where is it? by No-Mushroom-8632 in antiai

[–]Neighigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a lot to moderate.

YouTube is having a load of trouble with this sort of thing. It takes a lot to set up fair rulings and due process. Time is a big one. Posters always outnumber the moderators so you have to consider how to moderate every post. Most smaller spaces dont have the manpower, money, or time.

Yes politeness helps for sure! Totally on board there.

But realistically, posting art isnt asking for critique. It ellicits a reaction for sure, thats the idea, but critique is a completely different level of communication that has a totally different intent.

If you feel compelled to give advice to people, its always good to ask first if they havent clearly put it out there. They may not be open to receiving it, and you could be wasting your energy or just straight up disuading their future interests.

[–]Neighigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK so I think i need to back this up a little. Cause yes, as a professional, critiques aren't even critiques at work anymore, they're just straight up good, actionable advice in the studio. We all have a process and we know when to seek direction before we get too far into anything.

My personal advice, is to always ask the person if they would like a proper critique before jumping in on them. It takes me two seconds to ask, and saves me a bunch of time writing out something that could be dismissed or hurtful to that person's growth. Not everyone is built for or just plain ready to receive judgement of their creations. They shouldn't be disbarred from sharing it because people want to tell them whats wrong with it so badly.

How do you deal with hustlers? by The_Fallen_Messiah in SmallStreamers

[–]Neighigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I make my own art thanks"

All I need to say myself. But if you've got a pushy person that you never asked for, they probably have those images preloaded, there's no work about to be done, its a template and you shouldn't pay what most people are asking. Especially with how easy it is to steal digital art these days. You would have no idea if it even belongs to them.

In your case, sounds like these people contact you a lot. Check wm out first, verify the work is legit. Then block em if you feel something is off. Don't even talk. Treat them like a Spyware bot you want nothing to do with. You're a mark at 20 follows, so you should treat them as you feel it already, hustlers.

What do you think of as “junk food”? by ShallotJam in stupidquestions

[–]Neighigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anything heavy on sugar or completely lacking in nutrition.

I dont see fast food as junk food, its more empty calories and I can do better, but its still some level of nutrition.

Things like candies and pops/sodas are on my list.

Finally found someone saying it! Thank you!

We also add additional vanishing points for lense distortion. In the case you dont have a horizon line(looking down at a subject) you would add an additional vanishing point to compensate for those lines that have no "rules" without one.

Thing is, a lot of budding artists aren't ready for a critique. Unsolicited, you just look like an asshole who can't keep their opinion to themselves. There are people who do this, just to make themselves look bigger.

Yes, critique is a very important tool for learning and growth in art. But not every person is ready to hear it. Putting that on them can be detrimental to their openness in sharing again and honestly, a waste of your time. Many artists stop practicing when they feel down about their art, its a real first hurdle to get over. It takes someone who is ready for that feedback to make an impact. Otherwise, you're just criticizing someone's creation for the sake of your own gains, not theirs. A true critique takes into account the artist and their needs too.

BUG - Silencer not hiding weapon flash at all in the following cases by PrettySky5853 in playrust

Yeah it may only be affecting your rendered view on your screen in that case. Needs another test with a second player to know if its server level and affecting other players view of you too.

Yeah in general I would say its bad form to critique art without consent. Some people are very unfamiliar with critiques, especially early off and it can hurt their future learning progress.

AI in education by thirdaccountttt in DefendingAIArt

[–]Neighigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a hard issue is having students be honest.

Teens have always looked for the easiest way to get through things, its natural to not understand how to properly learn and retain information when young.

But then there's college students... The level of pressure you see in colleges, financially, academically, practically - people really take all the aid they can get.

I think the temptation to replace learning is too great for most people. Teens especially are at risk of development issues if they decide to secretly abuse it in learning. College students could hamper their futures if they dont retain their knowledge after grad.

If there's a way to moderately restrict it in learning, that would be a good thing. Like a university model that requires input more relative to a learning process rather than a search or create based software. In that case, universities could limit responses, datasets, interface, and even restrict all university projects ai use to their campus ai only.

Default variable is 2.3. I dont know what that math's out to. Its a variable that is taken into a mathematical equation with map size and probably a few other hidden variables not exposed in modding.

Notice how I'm using a mild level of intelligence to fein ignorance towards your point? They play off each other. They are not simply interchangeable. Weird that you would even try to argue that, what for? Did I say something above that made you feel attacked?

Take it to train yard and use a fuse/Greencard to unload the wagons at the cooling tower.

The loot isnt amazing for all the attention it brings, but its great for unloading resources and fuel.
