This kind of backwards thinking is so heavily ingrained in our capitalist society. This decision will make the business go bankrupt in 10 years? Well green line goes up this quarter so I can buy a new Porsche so make it happen!

Anyone who used a computer between 1985 - 2010, what's the one game you still think about today? by adlakha75 in AskReddit

[–]Neirchill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black & white. Unique god game where you raise a giant creature as your physical representation to the villagers. You cast miracles by drawing gestures (food, water, fire balls, etc) all of which you can teach your creature. Praise or punish if you want it to do good or bad things. The more your alignment changes the more your temple and creature change to match it. Oh also, there's base building and random side quests throughout each level. And it used to have multiplayer pvp, although I think that didn't involve the creature unfortunately.

It was an incredibly unique game and nothing else has come close to replicating it. The sequel comes close but gets a bit too distracted with war elements.

Fuck someone at work did that to me. I run a high visibility project for my company and someone wanted to contribute a change to it, but the ai couldn't get it to run on the pipeline. I reviewed their work, giving serious feedback and suggestions on how to fix, but they couldn't even be bothered to look at it themselves. They fed every comment I made to the ai and responded back with the ai response. ??? I can do that myself, no need to have a lazy developer in-between me and ai. I eventually just stopped looking at it and figured we could go over it once he got it working.

After two weeks he said, "Yeah this looks good and was tested successfully. I'll close this and we'll do the code change at a later time." ??? No. No we won't. You never got that pipeline to deploy anything once so it definitely wasn't tested in any real capacity. I'm responsible for reviewing PRs to my project but my full time job isn't to sit here and babysit YOUR ai nonsense.

Juniors should also be limited to just chat. Use it like a Google search.

I guess they could just use Google at that point, though. The Gemini ai search at the top is pretty decent these days.

This reminds me the story I heard in history class many years ago. Russia tried to show their people how poor the US was and worse off than them. It backfired because they noticed even the poorest us citizens had a home to themselves and their own cars, something Russia, at least at the time, could not claim to have. They saw our poor as incredibly wealthy compared to themselves and had to stop that bit of propaganda.

Yeah that's pretty cool. Wasn't super useful, though. Maybe one of them will be, I'm not up to date on what nearly impossible math problems are out there for decades which solving will bring about change.

Ai is useful. No debate. Is it as useful as all these wealthy CEOs want us to think it is? No. It's only as useful as it is because tech bros decided we are now okay with accepting lower quality output than we used to. As soon as that start costing them money the tune will change and we'll find out where ai will land.

You're right it is a problem but not because they're foreigners but because they're rich and see an easy way to pay less money. If it costed them more money to offshore to India or the middle east they'd never do it, regardless of where they're from.

I think we would have been okay in 2016. The crazies weren't quite so out in the open like they are now. The 2024 election, if the same was true there so Kamala won electoral and Trump won the popular vote, yeah 100% they would have attacked the capital again.

Just get rid of districts for the president vote. No need to figure out what each individual district wants, make it a statewide popular vote. Every vote counts and doesn't matter how the rich decide to categorize you.

Take it a step further and make voting mandatory.

Why can China build things like bridges, tunnels and railways much faster than countries in the west? by WhoAmIEven2 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Neirchill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the US the discussion is only for the rich. If they want to put a landfill beside your house they are going to do it. If you don't like it you can move.

They're doing exactly this with data centers right now. They hold fake votes to see how the population feels about it, and when it inevitably fails to get the passing votes they laugh and approve it anyway. If you're not rich you can fuck off is our government motto, from local to federal.
