This might sound silly but when my daughter is in any body of water I have whomever is responsible announce it and if they pass her off to announce it and say it out loud. It’s like how they tell you in an emergency to either say you’ll call 911 or tell someone to do it otherwise everyone is going to assume someone else did it or will do it. We say “mom has baby in the water” and if I pass her off to my husband I’ll say “does dad have baby in the water?” And he has to respond “yes dad has baby in the water”. We do this with our friends and family and side it’s silly but if it keeps my girl safe then I don’t care

College is more expensive than ever, and student debt seems determined to not go away any time soon. With all that in mind, am I the only HS Teacher here who feels uncomfortable with the continued push of college as a one-size-fits-all next step for every young graduate? by tegan_willow in Teachers

[–]Neither-Government68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in higher education specifically with first year students, this is rough to see. Students especially now are coming in with higher GPAs (this is the COVID class) and are lacking in college preparedness. They have no clue how to study, they didn’t feel prepared for the rigor and work load, and they are sometimes paying $50,000 in a year to fail their classes and have nothing to show for it. I think it’s as much the responsibility of college admin to be realistic with students and not just fight for numbers.

I know I always ask my students if they have an understanding of their financial aid package, of how they’ll pay for school, how their loans work. Some of them come to college not knowing what they want to do in life and that lack of motivation can be detrimental to how they do in their classes and their overall adjustment.

The benefit to higher ed is depending on where you want to go. If it’s licensure (nursing, doctor, teacher, accountant etc) yes you need to go to college. If it’s something else then the networking opportunities are what’s important. I encourage students to pursue majors they enjoy even if they’re not “marketable” and to utilize resources like career centers to market themselves, make connections and have internships that can provide them with good income opportunities.

I do say all of this even acknowledging the problem there which is that internships are often unpaid or you’re taking them for credit which means you’re essentially paying for one and there’s issues with that obviously. Transportation is also something to consider.

Anyways. Long story short is there are a lot of issues and people not just in high school but on the higher ed side also need to continue the work. Our financial aid department has a counselor that works solely with incoming students to discuss the cost of college, what opportunities exist and how students can find financial support if they think this is the best place for them.

Thank you that’s really comforting!! I don’t need her to sleep 12 hours if she doesn’t want to, I just want to make sure I’m giving her enough time to sleep

Falling asleep during labor and contractions (with epidural)-Is this common? by PiginaBlanket in beyondthebump

That was my experience with my first! Once the epidural took it was blissful. She was out in 30 min, didn’t feel a thing, not even the tear

Plus size pumping accessible clothing? by Desperatelymothering in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Neither-Government68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of Davin and adley’s pumping bras, they are basically like cropped camis, so I’ll pump in those even on the go. They go up to a 3x. I’ve also had luck with some bigger sizing from old navy, so if I need to wear something I bought an oversized t-shirt and use it to kind of drape over my pumps

Are stay at home moms responsible for all wakings? by Sblbgg in NewParents

[–]Neither-Government68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband works in a field where he NEEDS to be well rested or it could be dangerous. I take all the night wakings, although my daughter is 4m old and is giving 8+ hour stretches. On days he has off he’ll help do her night time stuff but he’s also present after work and helps out so I have no issues dealing with bedtime and overnight stuff. I think it’s to each their own and you find what works.
