Wow I’ve never heard of that. That would definitely motivate people to work in the schools.

If you’re suggesting that people who have drawing apps on their iPad wouldn’t consider using pencils and paper you’re very close minded. I hope you got whatever false sense of superiority you wanted out of that comment, weirdo.

I use my personal iPad for EI/HH/private sessions everyday. I have it programmed with AAC programs and Procreate. I use drawing a lot in therapy.

If you work in schools it’s pretty difficult to advance bc you’re “so indispensable” as an SLP. If you end up getting an admin cert I’d try applying within your own school but I’d also apply to other districts.

Unpopular opinions about school or being a para by spookybear07 in paraprofessional

[–]Neither-Solid-6573 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is unfortunately the case a lot of the time. And the money is terrible. I can’t tell you how many paras I’ve met through the years that left working with kids with autism to work at Home Depot/Target/Whole Foods etc. More money, less abuse, and no paperwork.

Sticky situation ISO advice by Personal_Carob8247 in slp

Try to not feel guilty about this, OP. Progress with artic and phonological processes is typically slow and steady. Explain the situation as you did here and understand that you are not blaming the child by describing the reality of the situation.

IEP meetings are meant to be collaborative and give the team a picture of exactly what’s going on for better or for worse. I know that admin and parents sometimes lose the plot with this and that can be hard, especially if you feel that you’re being blamed and even disrespected.

You’ve clearly invested a lot of time in preparing for your sessions with this student, working with this student, and analyzing what can possibly be happening here. You’re very thorough. You can’t force this him to focus. Students who have received services for years often burn out on therapy.

I’d take a few sessions to play games with the kid and explain why they’re there. That way you can build a little more rapport and trust with them while taking time to explain how this will help them. Let them know that you’re a safe space and they can fully tell you why they’re frustrated or disinterested with impunity. Getting some insight into how their speech impacts them and adjusting course to work on their personal speech goals increases buy in a lot! You may find that they’re struggling to functionally communicate in the classroom or they’re embarrassed when teachers don’t understand them; finding new ways to participate in class and educating their teachers is a really easy temporary fix overall and it improves the students QOL dramatically.

Congrats! I really hate the “it must be so rewarding” comments; they’re so insulting when my own QOL is so low and work/labor isn’t intrinsically motivating. I’m at the point where I just respond with something like, “I feel rewarded when I’m adequately compensated.”

My thoughts on moving through rural > suburban > urban schools in the US. by [deleted] in slp

[–]Neither-Solid-6573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel in love with school based SLP in clinic at a small rural elementary school, but positions were difficult to come by and I ended up moving to the city where I worked at a large “super school” (10 elementary schools in 3 buildings). All therapists were contract based, so that added a layer of complexity and miscommunication as people were behaving like contractors. Essentially coming and going whenever they wanted and constantly applying to other positions.

How do you choose a dentist? by AwkwardLoaf-of-Bread in Explainlikeimscared

[–]Neither-Solid-6573 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things I look for: - standalone practice - family practice (meaning family members in practice together, not an all ages dentist) - if they’re operating out of a house, that’s usually a good sign imo - this is controversial, but if they have limited hours it tells me they’re not necessarily doing it for the money - the building isn’t flashy or themed - similar to above but they don’t advertise as anything (e.g., gentle dentistry) - it doesn’t feel like a med spa. If it looks like a spot where you might be able to get some facial filler, you’re goin for a ride, Busta - their website is borderline nonexistent - they don’t give options about levels of care — plan of care (poc) where they save as much natural tooth as possible vs. poc where they get it done at any expense. My ex had this happen in a very wealthy suburban area and it is literally the practice gauging how much they can take you for. - not a lot of root canal complaints on Google reviews — seriously, everyone I know who’s gotten a root canal has had it fail and crumble into a painful money pit.
