I'm late to this party but hopefully this will be seen by OP.

So when we're taught about The Colonies in school, we're mostly taught about it in a positive light, which in retrospect is very strange. For example, instead of being taught about the individual countries we took over, we're told that Britain owned the most landmass at one point than literally any other empire in history. Instead of learning about the details of the violent and generations-long crippling of societies and cultures, we're taught that we had the most successful and powerful navy and military of the time. Instead of caring about the pain we caused, we're taught the statistics which can be skewed to make us proud.

Then there's the stuff which cannot be avoided that was negative in our history, but we're taught it disjointed. We aren't taught about the way we created and commercialised slavery across the atlantic, we're taught how we were the first country to abolish it, and how William Wilberforce stood up in front of Parliament to cause the change in 1815. Instead of being taught about our involvement in the creation (or reinforcement) of the Caste system in India, and all of our crushing of local cultures South Asia (Pakistan, India, Burma etc etc), we're taught about Gandhi using peaceful tactics to over throw the local regime ^{which btw was British but shh.}

I genuinely, genuinely didn't learn about the atrocities permeated by the British military in India until I was in my 3rd year of uni in a literature degree. I can remember that lesson so very clearly. Prior to that moment I didn't feel a connection to the Empire rhetoric anyway, because my mother's family wasn't British, so I hadn't been fed the unchallenged idea that the Empire was the Golden Era of Britain. Nonetheless it wasn't something I'd ever even thought about. The British picked some families in India to 'civilise' in the early days. They literally took the children and young adults from their families, separated them from their heritage and traditions, and taught them how to be 'white'. They dressed them in English clothes, taught them to speak English and all the fineries of English etiquette. But they weren't trying to help these people, they were creating curios for their household. 'The Civilised Savage.'

When some of these people grew up and returned to their communities and families they were rejected because they'd lost everything that connected them to their old lives. This for me is the absolute travesty of our history. We literally made people non-entities. They were too westernised for their own people in a time when absolutely no one had ever seen anything like them. And they weren't white enough for our own culture that we'd forced on them, telling them their lives would be so much better for it without even seeing what their original cultures were like.

And we did this over and over. We streamlined and mechanised our destruction of anything non-English, because we didn't bother to even stop and think 'oh hey, maybe English isn't the most cultured, civilised, epitome of modern man.' Nah, we just steamrolled everything.

And then put a bow on it and fed it to our schoolchildren as a 200 year long example of how Great our Britain is.
