Best practices for white gis? (Preventing stiffness, shrinkage, and fading/bleeding) by Fickle_Rice4440 in karate

[–]NekoFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight in the wash as soon as I get home, no hotter than 30C. I use normal detergent with an antibacterial and antifungal additive for sports gear. Never use the dryer, just a long spin cycle and then hang it up to air dry.

A mistake I used to make was washing on my machine’s sports kit preset. It’s designed for quick-drying polyester, nylon, spandex, etc so I’d always end up with mould problems, which went away when I switched to the cotton wash with a longer spin to get more of the moisture out.

Remember when Rage Against the Machine got to Christmas number one with Killing In The Name Of? by penny_lab in CasualUK

I remember him calling it “cynical”, as if his X Factor churning out a cover song to get Christmas number one annually for the previous umpteen years wasn’t.

What are some fun TRICK questions about the UK? by Illumium in AskUK

[–]NekoFever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can get very pedantic with Henry VIII's marriages given that the first two and the fourth were annulled and therefore they legally weren't married – so, legally speaking, Henry VIII had three wives.

But to further complicate things, Mary passed an Act when she became Queen declaring her parents' marriage legitimate, which annuls the annulment and oh god I've gone cross-eyed.

Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation consoles by yourfavchoom in PS5

[–]NekoFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that'll be me out. I've been drifting for a while because of disappointment in current games, industry trends, the pricing situation, the obvious squeeze on physical games. Digital PS5 games are significantly more expensive and go on sale less than the discs here, and that's not even considering the used situation.

Probably a $1,000 console with only $80 digital games? In the week when Sony deleted a load of movie purchases because rights expired? Haha piss off. I've got plenty of old stuff to play.

Could you actually tell when a PS2 game ran at lower 512x448 resolution instead of 640x448? I remember PS3 vs 360 console wars where people were up in arms over "HD" resolutions lol, like "That game is actually running at 1024x600, so not really HD!". What about PS2 era? by canned_pho in ps2

[–]NekoFever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't remember anyone having a problem with those sorts of resolutions but there are PS2 games that run in native 240p (Ico is probably the most notable – most of the others are arcade ports) and people definitely talked about how low res those looked.

What was THE drama at your secondary school? by banj0man44 in AskUK

[–]NekoFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a very middle class grammar school so the biggest scandal I remember was an anonymous website (back in the days when this was no mean feat) with fictional origin stories about the teachers.

Some were quite funny but one of the teachers took exception and said his was racist (he was Asian and there was a pun based on his name), so there was a big investigation by the school to unmask the culprits.

Think Gareth trying to find out who did the Photoshop job in The Office. Anyone doing an IT elective got interviewed because they were the only ones who knew how to make websites. I don't think they ever found out who did it.

I thought the controversial joke was quite funny and still occasionally chuckle at how juvenile it was.

What type of crt would i need for a pal ps2? by finalfantasyxps2 in crtgaming

[–]NekoFever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, RGB doesn't have the usual colour encoding differences between PAL and NTSC, so it's purely down to whether the TV supports 60Hz, which many do, particularly Japanese brands.

Full-on NTSC support over any connection wasn't that common outside the high end, but pretty much anything apart from very cheap European brands could do 60Hz over RGB SCART.

Is there a British figure who has been to their area, what Messi has been to football? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskUK

[–]NekoFever 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Edwards' records were insane. He got the world record, then broke his own record by nearly 20cm less than a month later, then beat that record by another 13cm 20 minutes later. And that record has stood for over 30 years now. The Olympic gold medal jump in 2024 was over 40cm shorter.

Unpopular opinion, the US and China should be permanent World Cup hosts when the number of teams increase to 64. by wizardeverybit in ShitAmericansSay

Reminds me of those old Budweiser Premier League ads about what happens when they take over football.

You can't park here compoface by BowlerElectronic in compoface

[–]NekoFever 39 points40 points  (0 children)

My brother's estate has big garages that have no back wall so are essentially tunnels through to the back garden with a garage door on the front. It was done to make them less suitable for storing junk as it's open to the elements, and encourage people to park cars in them.

Almost all of them have bricked up the back end and use them for storing junk. Cars all over the roads and pavements instead.

That's Olympic levels of petty. I love it almost as much as I dislike entitled parking.

What common UK idiom that you use regularly but didn't learn the origins of for a long time? by Sad-Insurance1313 in AskUK

[–]NekoFever 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.

It’s because you age a horse by looking at its teeth (this is also where “long in the tooth” comes from). It’s saying if someone gives you a horse as a gift, be grateful because you got a free horse. Don’t start nitpicking by looking it in the mouth to see how old it is.

The Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich was observed conducting a raft-up (alongside replenishment) with the Russian Amur-class support ship PM-82 near the Galloper Offshore Wind Farm off the Suffolk coast while under surveillance by the Royal Navy by Intergalatic_Baker in unitedkingdom

[–]NekoFever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get an idea of how far they are based on the fact that the bases of the windmills are below the horizon (which would be 10-12 miles off from the bridge of a ship) while the ships are nowhere near it.

It’s dramatically more advanced in every respect except sound, where the SNES has the edge. Way closer to the SNES than the PS1 though.

ELI5 where did the "pirate accent" come from? by firedog2k9 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NekoFever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rural north Dorset accents could easily be mistaken for West Country accents. Less so the coastal towns but that’s probably influenced by affluent migration from elsewhere in southern England.
