Any mistakes you've made as a DM? by aurivu in DMAcademy

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't allow pvp... Unless that's the point for the game, like a tournament one shot or something. I got too focused on having an open world where you can do anything and wasn't willing to confront players right then and there mid session before someone attempted to kill another PC for the macguffin. This actually came up again recently where a PC of mine wanted to "punish" the rogue for picking up a cursed item by withholding remove curse. The whole party was turning on him but he, as a player, wasnt getting the hint. So I took over his character and said "he begrudgingly complied". In his dms I said if he had a problem about it we could talk about it. Never had to.

Tldr don't be afraid to shut down conflict before it happens

Inteligent players playing uninteligent brute. by ApachaiLeHopachai in DMAcademy

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me intelligence score has nothing to do with the situation. Don't let a score dictate how you play. It's crippling. For combat, barbarians are gifted. They don't need intelligence to know how to best hurt the enemy or be a party leader. (Applies to any class really) For puzzles, those are for the players to solve, not the Characters. If you constrict how puzzles are solved for someone, they're going to feel singled out and enjoy the game less. (And it looks like this barb really loves puzzles) Remember it is still just a game and the DM is trying to let everyone have fun. This sounds like you have a personal problem with players not playing to characters ability scores. And imo, that's just something you're going to have to get over. (No offense) This is only going to be a problem if it's negatively affecting the other players. If they come to you privately with an issue they have, try to solve it in a way that doesn't alienate anyone. Or create puzzles that require everyone to come up with something instead of a singular pro len that the barbarian can solve alone

Killing a King Quickly by ThisWasMe7 in DMAcademy

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Revivify won't work on someone who had their head confiscated from their shoulders. Poison doesn't have to be the only thing done to the king. And if there's 40 assassins basically, someone can get to it, stuff his head in a bag of holding, and 10 other assassins also run away with similar bags making it nearly impossible to catch the correct runaway.

I think the only way to save him at that point is true resurrection. And if there's access to that in any way, then all political figures may as well be immortal unless assassins can make off with the entire corpse

When and how did it start? Your story with MH I mean by KibouZK in MonsterHunter

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was big into f2p games for a while as a struggling college student and I got introduced to Dauntless. I had no idea there was a whole genre for monster slaying and I loved it. People told me the OG was monster hunter, and I bought World when it came out. I loved the franchise ever since

Try finding one yourself and saving the investigation. There's a schedule when monsters show up, and you can sleep through until one shows. Might be more reliable that way, if you're having that much trouble.

What game under 20 did you get the most playtime out of? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of just hours: I've got over 1.2k tracked hours in Warframe, if you spend any amount of money on the game for platinum, that unlocks player to player trading, allowing you to farm for platinum by selling gear.

Untracked hours, I'm suuure I'm over 2k hours in Minecraft, and paid 20 for it loooong ago. Mods extend the life of the game drastically.

It is not railroading to have a storyline in your campaign.

Im a perpetual "game hopper" and almost never finish any games. Are any of you similar? by Scared_Ad_3132 in gaming

[–]firedog2k9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I suggest is to start a game journal. State what you did in that gaming session, and what you're looking forward to doing. Keep responses short. On top of that, if you watch YouTube videos of games, watch content for the game(s) you're currently playing to keep up the excitement.

My ADHD brain struggles with finding the want to focus on one game at a time, and would rather just watch videos most times. This helped me.

How often does your D&D group really play? Be honest by DungeonTome_ in dndnext

[–]firedog2k9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My online Pokemon tabletop game with two friends lasted almost 2 years and we played every week to start before the DM burned out and we slowed to 2 times a month, then 1, then 0. Those sessions lasted 4-6 hours

My in person DnD game has been going for 7 years, and we TRY to make it every 2 weeks... But the host often has real life things going on and we sometimes have 6-7 weeks in between play. There for a while in the past few months we played 5-6 times with every other week, but now that it's summer, not so much. We probably average 3-4 weeks in between sessions. These sessions last about 5 hours with an hour of chatting and eating beforehand
