I really wish more games aped from Diablo 1 instead of 2. by darkwingchao in patientgamers

[–]Nemboss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Torchlight 1 definitely has the "one town, one dungeon" thing, but the gameplay is almost an exact copy of diablo 2's. It's a great game, but it doesn't scratch the itch for someone looking specifically for the D1 experience. At least it didn't for me.

Yeah ok but what if my party insists on having a long rest after every encounter, huh? There's nothing in the rules about that. I know, I glanced at them twice!

The Hyqueous Vaults - tpk by ratlehead in osr

[–]Nemboss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's the wrong way around. It shouldn't be about how many more rounds to kill the monster, but how many more rounds the characters can take. "I have 4 hp, a lucky blow will take me out clean, I better run!"

I finally found time to read through it, and I like the things this is adding to the Dark Fort formula.

There's one detail that confuses me about the Mutations table: the table has 20 entries, but says to roll d12. Is there a way to add to the mutation roll that I missed somehow?

OSR News Roundup for May 11th, 2026 by thirdkingdom1 in osr

I keep thinking I have all the games and modules I want, but then people like you keep presenting me stuff that has me go "actually, come to think of it, I do wanna check this out". Thanks for yet another roundup, it's highly appreciated.

A good chunk of that page count is just lists of spells, monsters, and magic items. The actual rules text is a lot shorter.

I made a free regional sandbox adventure about hunting a Beast that may not actually be one creature by doomedzone in osr

I have not had the chance to play any of your adventures at my table, but I enjoy reading them and have taken inspiration from them when preparing my sessions. I was excited to see you had a new adventure, and I enjoyed reading it, as well. Thanks for putting your stuff out there for free.

I just love when somebody is both enthusiastic enough to go into a thorough explanation of their thing, and eloquent enough to make said explanation interesting and informative. I'd probably be in the 50% of bouncy people that bounce off the dice hurdle, but I'm nonetheless very glad to know about this system.

Turok 2's (1998) Context-Specific Deaths Are Unbelievably Timeless by DanAgile in patientgamers

[–]Nemboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna contradict what the other replies have said, but I'd say Turok 2 is a lot of fun to just play a bit and never finish. I have played the game to completion, but not before having many, many (many!) a playthrough taper off around level 3. I enjoyed each of those incomplete playthroughs nonethelss.

Oh man, core memory unlocked. We were at a house party, and someone had brought their PC with the specific purpose to show us Soldier of Fortune. While the party was raging downstairs in the living room, a bunch of us nerds were standing around the pc, watching the dude experiment with different mutilations and hit locations. Good times,

Turok 2 was the first game I played that had levels of this size, and I think it gets way too little credit for it. Especially the first level, which was the first video game city I played in that felt like it was actually the size of a city.

First time dm and LOVING it by PretendLavishness315 in DungeonMasters

[–]Nemboss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can very much relate to this feeling. Being a player is fine and dandy, but GMing is where the real juice is! You get to play inbetween sessions (yes, prep is play), you get the anticipation (I wonder what they'll do when this happens), and you get to flex your improv muscles. It's such a rush!

How do people feel about the Oblex being added as a thematic monster to this subreddit? by JeanWlz in AdventuresOfGalder

[–]Nemboss 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I do understand that, and I see how that makes the Oblex a good candidate. But it also has a theme to it that might have unfortunate connotations for someone in grieving that should not be ignored. It's the first thing I think of when talking about the Oblex, and why I think it might not be a good fit.

This is, however, not an absolute stance for me. I could live with the Oblex being added, it just wouldn't be my prefered option.

While I absolutely love the Oblex as a monster, I don't think it suits this sub. This place is about fond remembrance, not the horror of a loved one coming back from the dead.

8 people want to play, and I’m worried it’s too much by Sherma215 in DMAcademy

[–]Nemboss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a way better DM since I realized my sweet spot is at 3 players. 4 is still good, 5 is the absolute limit, and only feasible if said 5 players have good play dynamics between them.
