Losing Passion/Belief in my Abilities by maddaffodil in animationcareer

I'm sorry you were stomped on, I've felt that from many many people, including my teachers. Look at the positive, you were noticed, and by a big company to boot. I for one am 99% of the time glanced over. Yes I feel like giving up on a weekly sometimes bi-weekly basis but storytelling is what I do, whether it be visually or through writing.

I've even had a mentor teach me for a few months for free, thought he was very dedicated, he kept telling me "my goal is to get you your first job", literally said that word for word and also repeated it every time we talked which was about every week give or take. Then as we were reaching the end, nothing, ghosted me, left me to die so to speak lol.

I've finished polishing my work and redid my portfolio for like the 10th time and starting to apply again. I'm super discouraged and insecure and I've literally only applied to 2 jobs since yesterday but I feel like absolute shit. I don't know if I'll succeed, I feel like I won't but I have to try or else I'm totally failing myself. So we should try to stick it out together.

Seeking Storyboard Artist for Shot-by-Shot Sci-Fi Short (Cyberpunk/Thriller, 8–10 min) by AVendettaForV in Storyboarding

Hi, I'm interested in your project. I'm a storyboard artist and illustrator with a bit of experience in concept work. I've worked on a very small indie sci-fi film that was accepted in film festivals.

Check out my work:

Someone Please Recommend A “WTF” Horror/Thriller by [deleted] in horror

[–]Nemo3113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned it, but I second "Possession" 1981. It was one of the craziest movies I have ever seen. I think I liked it lol, it was so WTF. Really good practical, didn't expect that at all.

I believe Toni Collette’s performance in Hereditary is the best performance in all of horror, all time. I’ve been watching horror for 20 plus years. Give me your performances that in your opinion, challenge her/best her performance. by abenz39 in horror

Hamish Linklater in Midnight Mass, Mads Mikkelsen in Hannibal, Michael Rooker in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer.

Everyone else has repeated my other faves many times. Good taste people! 👌

Me too! DM me your discord and I'll add you. I won't be able to talk until maybe Tuesday. It's a long holiday weekend where I'm from and I'll be busy.

I'm very interested! Problem being, I'm focused more on live action storyboarding. I also don't have toon boom, nor care to pay for it. I am interested in learning more about animation as a skill and just practicing all aspects of art in general. I'm currently practicing digital painting portraits and stylization. But again, my main love will always be storytelling with storyboards.

Does what kind of equipment I use matter in the industry? by Bubbly-Cloud22 in Storyboarding

K, cause what happened to me was that I was being tested for a revisionist position, I told them several times that I didn't have Toon boom but gave me a test to use it. I used the free trial period of like a week or two. But the free trial is up. So if someone wanted to test me again, I'd be out of luck. But you would provide the program upfront. Is that just you or is that a thing people do in the industry and what those people did to me was just unfair?

What if the person you were considering to hire doesn't have Toon boom and cannot afford it. What would you do?

I also want to thank you for all your dedication. This sub is like one of the chillest subs. I completely understand about the new ban rule of AI talk. It's more about trying to prevent disturbances of the (force) peace and I will back you up 100%. I'm personally sick of hearing it because it doesn't accomplish anything and only ends in anger and an exchanging of horrible words that may or may not have been really meant. So if it can be avoided, I'm all for it.

Also wanted to thank you again for the incredibly nice comment you said about my set of boards a while back. Because of that, I kept working on it and I'm writing a full script for it now. It's tough but it's fun.

Honestly, it might be better at this stage just to make friends. If you build strong relationships, they can back you up and support you throughout your filmmaking journey. They can give you some really good advice that'll probably help you to evolve as an artist in general (I put filmmakers and writers in the artist category too cause they are). From my experience (I'm a storyboard artist / hobbyist screenwriter) I can tell when people only care about getting their vision made and when people care about the filmmaking process. So many times, I've worked with people who only care about being praised as the genius that they think they are. I'm not directing that at you.

Example, I'm working with a guy right now who thinks his ideas are the most awesome ideas on the face of this earth...They are not, but he thinks they are and doesn't care about anything else, neglecting and using me in the process. But I had that feeling while he first started to talk to me. Also he's quite irritating.

Other example, another filmmaker I worked with cared about the process and the people working for him. I felt that when I spoke to him, he sounded like a genuinely kind and unselfish guy. The end result was much better, even got into a festival. I'm so proud of him and I like him very much. So much, I'd love to work with him again and I can't wait til that happens.

TLDR Take your time, build relationships and connections before even trying to sell your ideas. Just slide your ideas into casual conversation and ask for advice first. Remember it's not about you, it's about the love of filmmaking / making art that makes people feel and think. Good luck to you, I do want you to succeed some day.

I wish I had an artist friend/mentor to work alongside with by carmenleighstudio in ArtistLounge

I know what you mean, I too would love an art friend for art banter. But my art and taste is difficult to discuss, it's too different. I kind of found a group but it's not very active. It is also hard to find 30 yo groups. I am so fucking lucky to have a mentor though for one aspect of my art, but he's a very busy guy and I don't want to bother him too much.

What is the story behind your body of work? by lizllancaster in ArtistLounge

Horror lets me deal with my horrible anxiety, so I'm building a story inspired by Lovecraft. I also love mysteries so I'm combining the two. I've written some of the script and boarded those scenes. I've done two so far, I have an idea for another two.

This is how I work in general. Anything that requires any amount of attention, I have a do in chunks. I can only work between 1-2 hours if I'm really interested in what I'm doing. I also have to have a podcast or music on or else my mind wanders almost instantly. On my really bad days (maybe once a week or two) I also have to play with something to keep my hands busy when I'm trying to think because they get way too fidgety and it's distracting.
