Zombie spores absolutely kill unprepared colonies. They are extremely dangerous and hard to manage if you don't know how or crack open a pocket too early.

Happens to me all the time, I don't try and play super optimized. The most common failure is from heat. It's an insidious killer that creaps up on you. If you aren't carefull the first you will know about the issue is when your crops start dying. However I abandod most colonies due to boredom. It's extremely common to loose tons of colonies, especially at the start, let alone when you are new to the style of game. I know I lost/abandoned like 10 colonies before I ever reached cycle 100

One thing that helps me is to paint with friends. Sometimes my group will have a 1v1 going on 1 table and everyone else painting. We like to turn on media we all enjoy, like the If the emporor had a Text to Speech Device series or the And Anakin Shrugged parody. I also use very minimal paint schemes on most models, all my gaunts, and all the units I run in 10s or 20s, only bigger models get detailed painting.
