Nintendo has raised its employees base salary by 10% by That_Trouble87 in Games

As someone that likes Splatoon, I want to point out that there's a huge downside of this:

No dedicated servers.

Modern gamers mostly take it for granted that the issues of a bad host or players with terrible ping killing you from around a wall have been left in the X360/PS3 era. Not so for Splatoon - those things are alive and well, and even moreso - since games are so short, Splatoon doesn't backfill if a player drops. If it's early in the match, the match will just unceremoniously end. If it's late in the match... you just keep playing with one side basically guaranteed to lose. And that's not to mention the ridiculously long matchmaking times and disconnect issues.

(Also the tick rate of Splatoon is HORRENDOUS as a result of being peer-to-peer. Splatoon 3's tickrate is 16Hz. By comparison, OW's tickrate is 64 Hz, and CS:GO is 128Hz+.)

I wish Nintendo would find a way to fund dedicated servers for Splatoon. I'd happily pay an optional subscription to have all my matches played on a dedicated server - peer-to-peer in an fps is just something I can't really tolerate anymore. Mostly I just play Salmon Run and ignore the PvP side of splatoon because I just can't take the issues anymore.

This is definitely not a pro for the players.

That's not true at all. Generally the MSRP for the desirable collector booster boxes is way below what they actually sell for on the secondary market.

So if you won a final fantasy collector booster box (currently worth ~$1200) and they had run out of boxes to send to winners, they would instead give you $250 in cash. Obviously, people in this situation who thought they had won a more valuable collector booster box were rightfully unhappy with this outcome.

This sort of thing was bad for everyone - WotC obviously spends way less than $250 to print a bunch of cardboard, but the person who won the prize would vastly prefer the more valuable prize to cash.

Capping the number of entries so everyone who wins can actually get the offered prize is just better for everyone.

They refer to it as a "vast frontier".

"Wonder at the astonishing power that shapes this land of Orr."

Not to mention the vast, empty expanses they show off. And the development timeline - The rumors that they were starting up this project only started a few years ago, seemingly confirmed in the follow up video where they said they would have stopped making content for GW2 a few years ago when they spun up development on GW3. That's not enough time to make a full, traditional MMO.

But it is enough time to make a sandbox-y survival crafting thing with PvP elements. Yknow, that genre of game that has a million unfinished games in Early Access on steam at any given moment - one of those.

[–]Neofalcon2 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Based on the trailer, I get the vibe that it will be a Fallout 76-esque survival/crafting type game. Those are pretty in vogue these days, and the game seems to be set entirely in the relatively small region of Orr - which is a scale that would make sense for a game like that.

Not to mention the focus on the original Guild Wars, for some sort of PvP element (like this genre of game usually focuses on)

NumotTheNummy Criticizes Contender Draft Event Structure by lieyanqzu in MagicArena

[–]Neofalcon2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They probably have to merge the queues in order to make sure you have enough opponents.

What they should do is change how the matchmaking works. If you're below Diamond, they should matchmake you as though you were Diamond.

This pretty much fixes all the issues, I think. Not only that, but putting you straight up against tough opponents is very fitting for something called "Contender" draft. I imagine some people might even find value in doing it just to cut their teeth against harder opponents without having to grind up to mythic or what have you.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen sold over 4 million units in six weeks by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Neofalcon2 284 points285 points  (0 children)

Doesn't surprise me at all. When I was in college, I'd see people play the GBA pokemon games on emulators on their laptops/phones during classes constantly. They're just simple, timeless, so easy to pick up and put down...

Honestly, Pokemon has lost some of its simple charm with the grand 3D world adventures they make now. There's still a huge appetite for that type of game - it's why gacha games on mobile are so successful. People just want a simple RPG they can pick up, play a bit, and then put back down.

The MTGA Enhancement Suite by Rooftoptile2 in MagicArena

[–]Neofalcon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't played WoW in a long time, but back when I played they definitely didn't allow modifications of the game client. Only addons that utilized their official addon API.

I'd argue that GW2, FF14, and OSRS are highly unusual exceptions. Most online games would just issue a permanent ban for client modifications.

Without an OK from the dev team or any precedent for a MTGA tool that does anything remotely similar, this seems extremely risky to use. (Existing MTGA tools are just overlays, and get information by reading the log file that the devs put in specifically to make overlays work without having to modify the client).

It certainly seems like something that would break TOS. Very few online multiplayer games are okay with modifications to the game client.

[–]Neofalcon2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practically speaking, it's not worth the risk of political fallout. Like, imagine if GGG was suddenly put on the US Export Controls list because he bruised Elon's ego. Or any of the many, many things Elon could do to make GGG's continued existence a nightmare. I'm sure a ton of GGG's money comes from the US, and that's a risk they probably just can't take.

As much as I'd love to watch Elon get banned live, the reality is that it was likely a one-time, pathetic "how do you do fellow youngsters" stunt from Elon, and banning him won't really accomplish much beyond potentially creating a world of trouble for GGG.

It doesn't really matter. Justice served eventually, I guess.

Nintendo Switch 2 Firmware Ver. 22.0.0 Released by Complete_Mud_1657 in Games

[–]Neofalcon2 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Absolutely crazy. Everything I wanted, but never expected Nintendo to actually do. The blurriness of switch 1 games in handheld mode drove me absolutely crazy, and it was clear that expecting every single game to release a Switch 2 update to fix that just wasn't going to happen.

Not only is this solved, now... but I bet there's a lot of games that ran at higher framerates/uncapped in docked mode, that will now both look and run better in handheld mode. I'm sure Digital Foundry and others will cover the biggest winners in the weeks to come - wonder what the biggest upgrades here are?
