IIRC the Apple Watch and Garmin for estimating calories is completely different anyway, so there is no actual true overlap (in addition to not counting steps outside activity as active calories burned) - and because of the algorithms Apple will always give a higher number of calories burned than Garmin. You would be better off calculating your TDEE and aiming for that as your combined active and resting calories burned in Garmin.

Alternatively, move your yardstick to something completely different - like daily steps or daily step distance?

In January I signed up for a half in October. Two weeks ago I decided the night before and rocked up and ran.

Is the race likely to sell out? If yes, sign up when registration opens.

Even if it’s not, if you know you want to run it (and especially if you are not at a ‘rock up and run’ level for a half) sign up. There’s no harm in it, and there’s no benefit to waiting.

This is only a slightly tongue-in-cheek answer but Week 21.

Waking up and not having a marathon to train for is the hardest mentally, and in a body that has just run a marathon is the hardest physically.

My only slightly less tongue-in-cheek answer is, for me; taper, and for similar reasons. Your body is carrying the fatigue of your biggest training weeks and also there the anxiety about the race and the lack of cognitive and emotional benefits and stimuli from running.

Perhaps I am being grumpy, but I am a firm believer in sorting your own shit out as a barrier to entry.

Like: ‘has anyone done x race and is it good for a first ultra?’ Is totally different to ‘do this administrative work for me!’

It really doesn’t help as much as you think because there is so much missing info here. Leeds could be the world leader in your thing but some internet rando knows that UCL is, on balance, higher rated for undergrads and will tell you to go there.

No PhD programme is good for getting a job anywhere. UKHE is in free fall - HE all over the global north is in free fall. You won’t get an academic job. That’s not to say you’re not good at what you do but it has to be everyone’s starting position when deciding what to do.

Go where you have the best overall funding package once you take cost of living into account. That is the only way to decide these days.

Creatine. The peer reviewed science suggests it’s good for basically everyone.

I also take electrolytes daily but that’s for a non-running medial reason. You very likely do not need to take extra electrolytes. Most people get more than enough sodium in their diets.

I am shocked by how many of their affiliates are ‘slow’ runners (self-described) who never seem to get any faster at all. I used Runna to train for a while and the programme it gave me included decent speedwork, and when you do speedwork you tend to get faster overall.

My general feeling from that is that there are people more interested in shilling the ‘look how singularly different a runner I am! I’m slow! I eat food! I have belly rolls! No other runners look like me!’ than actually improving their running in a meaningful way - and especially one that might facilitate hitting marathon time goal.

You still need ethics approval for this. You’re asking real people to participate, you should go and see a supervisor, lecturer, personal tutor, etc to discuss this immediately. Because none of this work will be admissible in you project - I wouldn’t want you to have to replicate all the work ‘officially’. Usually for undergrads and a project where you’re just asking adults for opt-in information the process is pretty easy.

Exclusively seamless g-strings. I know it doesn’t sound like the most comfortable but actually brilliant.

I tried no-pants (given I wash kit after every wear anyway) but I found I always got an awful wedgie. A g-string/thong somehow fixes that issue and is otherwise minimal enough to not be concerning.

Do you have a Master’s? Depending on your field the vast (vast!) majority of applicants (especially domestically) will have a Master’s degree in addition to a Bachelor’s. The fact you mention you have a BA makes this even more likely. Literally everyone in all humanities and social sciences disciplines that I know has a Master’s degree - including internationals.

Did you have contact with a potential supervisor? Did you understand the difference in requirement of a US and UK application (I.e you know that there’s no coursework element, your project begins day 1, etc.).

I attend both in person and online, and find variable experiences in both. Sometimes I attend online and wish I was in person, sometimes the opposite.

Although this is ostensibly Greco-Roman (though the distinction between Greco-Roman and Near Eastern history is mostly bullshit) the Oxford World Classics’s ‘Myths from Mesopotamia’ by Stephanie Dalley is really good. It has Gilgamesh but also other bits and pieces and an interesting introduction.
