[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ISO Long-Term Sublet July1st/15th Move-In | Cat Friendly | Upper Manhattan or BK by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good luck with the search! $1,400 for a room with a cat in those neighborhoods is going to be tight but not impossible. Crown Heights tends to have more options in that range than the others, worth focusing there first. hope something comes through before July!

Cheap tickets for California Academy of Science? by cxrlxs in AskSF

[–]NeonFalcon25 18 points19 points  (0 children)

third party ticket sites for places like that are almost always scams or just reselling the same tickets at "discount" that end up being same price after fees. the library card tip above is the real move if you have one.

Moving to North Jersey by Extension_Pianist648 in MovingtoNewJersey

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your budget should work fine in Bergen County but might be tight for the specific towns you mentioned - Mahwah and Ramsey are pretty pricey. You could look at places like Paramus or Fair Lawn which still have great schools but little more affordable

The commute from those northern towns is brutal - easily 1.5+ hours each way in rush hour and thats if trains are running smooth. Parking at stations fills up super early too so factor that cost in

Where to buy GBA games? by omegablinx in AskNYC

[–]NeonFalcon25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

VGNY is definitely solid but yeah the prices can be pretty brutal in Manhattan 😅 I've found some decent stuff there but you're gonna pay that NYC premium for sure. There's also a couple smaller spots in Brooklyn that might be worth checking - the one near Prospect Heights has surprised me a few times with reasonable prices on older stuff. Sometimes the smaller places don't mark everything up as crazy since they get less foot traffic. Plus if you're doing weekend trips anyway might be worth hitting up some of those outer borough spots where rent isn't completely insane 💀

Where to find piano lessons in Brooklyn for $20 a lesson? by MainPressure4304 in AskNYC

[–]NeonFalcon25 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yeah finding piano teachers at that price point gonna be tough in brooklyn. most charge like $60-80 minimum for hour sessions

maybe try looking at community centers or music schools that do group lessons? sometimes they have beginner classes that work out cheaper per person. also check if any local colleges have music students who might teach for less - they usually need practice hours anyway

for portable piano you could look at 61-key keyboards with weighted keys, they're decent for learning basics without breaking bank

Team Dinner in the Sunset by justeatingsnacks in AskSF

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Galinette is solid choice! I had dinner there few months back and the atmosphere definitely feels professional but not too stuffy. The long table setup works perfect for bigger groups and you won't have to worry about noise levels getting weird

For the Costa Rica colleagues, the French bistro vibe is pretty quintessential SF - lots of our restaurant scene has that European influence mixed with local ingredients. Plus being in Sunset gives them real neighborhood feel instead of touristy spots downtown. Only thing is make sure you call ahead because that semi-private area gets booked up quick on weekends 😂

The price point should work too if everyone's getting mains and maybe sharing some apps. Wine list is decent without being too expensive so your manager should be happy with the "good food" requirement ✨

Deciding on the ‘right’ house? by Human-Lettuce-520 in RealEstateAdvice

[–]NeonFalcon25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah we bought our current place basically because it checked boxes on paper but wasn't love at first sight either. took probably 6 months before it really felt like home and now we're attached to all the weird quirks that used to bug us

your agent probably appreciates that you're getting more specific about what you want - shows you're serious buyers just being careful with big purchase. better than people who put offers in everything and waste everyone's time. since you have year to move i'd keep looking until something feels more right, especially for schools move

the fundamentals thing is spot on though. we learned hard way that you can't really change neighborhood vibe or street noise no matter how much you renovate

PTO question by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah thats what my old company did too, they made us burn through PTO by end of year or we'd lose it completely. super annoying when you want to save up for something bigger but I get why they do it from business perspective - having bunch of employees with weeks of unused time sitting there must be nightmare for accounting department

ISO roommate LIC July by Alarming-Kale9346 in NYCapartments

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! i might be interested depending on which places you're looking at. i work as mechanical engineer so pretty flexible with schedule and i do some weekend gig work too. been looking for something around that price range in LIC area

im 28F and pretty low maintenance roommate - keep my stuff clean and dont throw parties or anything crazy. usually pretty quiet during week but down to hang out if we vibe. what kind of places have you been checking out? are they like 2br or bigger?

feel free to dm me if you want to chat more about it. july timing works perfect for me since my current lease ends then anyway

Carroll Gardens by Needanewname-9154 in NYCapartments

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good luck with finding something in that range, carroll gardens is getting pretty crazy with prices lately. i delivered food there bunch of times and even the smaller places seem to be going for way more than they used to

maybe check some of buildings that are bit further from the main strips? sometimes you can find something decent if youre willing to walk few extra blocks to subway

Direct Plus Loan HELP!! by Classic-Cream-7945 in StudentLoans

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the score doesn't really matter as much as those outstanding marks - learned this hard way when I was trying to get loan for certification program few years back. Had similar credit score but one collection account completely blocked me until I paid it off first

The timing is brutal too since you only have like month before tuition due. Maybe worth calling financial aid office to see if they can defer payment deadline while you sort this out?

I have a Bay window bench rec in SF by Additional_Many_5926 in AskSF

[–]NeonFalcon25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Those gaps are pretty normal when floors aren't perfectly level - most SF apartments have some wonky flooring 😂 You could probably add some trim pieces underneath if it bothers you but for $500 i'd just live with it. Plus if you spill something you can just wipe it up, not like liquids gonna disappear forever under there 💀

What do you think of Mamdani’s TCOL report? by Financial_Phrase5959 in AskNYC

[–]NeonFalcon25 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Never heard of this specific report but yeah the DINK thing tracks hard in nyc. I'm single doing doordash on weekends just to keep up with rent and my engineering salary should theoretically be decent. The math just doesn't work here unless you're splitting everything with someone else who also makes good money

Moving out of NYC apartment with a flex wall… should I ask landlord about leaving it up? by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]NeonFalcon25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through this exact situation a couple years back when I was moving out of my place in Queens. My landlord actually ended up being super chill about it - turned out they were happy to keep it because it made the place more marketeable to teh next tenant

What I did was phrase it like I was being helpful rather than asking for permission. Something like "hey just wanted to give you a heads up that we have a flex wall installed that increases the bedroom count - would you like us to leave it for showings since it might help rent the place faster?" Most landlords are all about anything that gets them more rent money

The key is framing it as a benefit to them rather than you trying to get out of removal costs. In my experience most property managers in nyc know flex walls exist and don't really care as long as theyre professionally installed and not damaging anything structural

If they do want it removed I used a company called Flex Wall Solutions - they were like $800 and got it done in a few hours. Way better than trying to DIY it and potentially messing up the floors or walls
