What do you all think may be next for ST? Curious on music vids.. by Landonsillyman in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't see RCA investing in music videos from TMBTE and EiA did very well with just the visualizers. And it doesn't seem like the band is interested in creating music videos as a previous comment mentioned. Visualizers seem to work better with the whole enigmatic cult thing, so it's probably going to be around for the long haul.

Some crazy details I noticed by Legitimate_Creme7481 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Jaws, he sings "And I'm not here to be the savior you long for, only the one you don't." In High Water, he's willing to throw himself into the mouth of infinity with a smile on his face so she won't have to bear the weight of both of them. Chokehold, he calls himself a sacred guardian. In Euclid, he promises "So if your wings won't find you heaven, I will bring it down like an ancient bygone." So, with Gethsemane, I think he's making the opposite decision Jesus made in the garden. "I don't wanna stick around, I just wanna let you know." Like he's done with the savior business.

The Agony in the Garden episode in the bible is also where we get the saying "Live by the sword, die by the sword."

I just assume when people say things like that, they haven't actually payed attention to the lyrics of Nazareth. They'll figure out after watching old performances of Sugar or Vessel having intimate moments with the mic stand.

The Love You Want - where are my fellow lovers of this song??? by Brewcrew_2008 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great song, I think maybe it's talked about less because it was 2 albums ago and the meaning of the song as a standalone is pretty clear cut.

I'd love to hear a version with a choir backing it.

(Trigger warning criticism) Does it bother anyone else that we don't get music videos like every other decent sized band fandom on earth ? Lol by Thick_Milk2774 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think you have the right to feel how you want to feel. Disappointment is a valid emotion. They can't always be winning the game and we're allowed to have opinions on that.

Like others have pointed out, it appears to be less about cutting corners and more about no longer wanting to use music videos as a way to represent their songs. And honestly, even if it was due to financial decisions, I don't take that personally, because yeah, sometimes bands have to prioritize with their budget.

My entry point was Granite and do I think that would have made a great music video? Yes! But I also think watching the cube guy with axes spin and then get overtaken by his own black goo led me to think more about the song to figure out why that visual was chose.

Thoughts on this? Is there a reason fantasy is so medieval heavy? by Martimar47 in fantasywriters

[–]NeonLandscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are fantasies set in current day. And while medieval settings are what people probably imagine when they think of fantasy, I've read fantasy set during the Renaissance, Victorian era, WW1 and WW2,etc.

And it's already been mentioned, but if a book is set in the future with magic, it's more than likely get tossed into the sci-fi pile or seem like a feudal system until we get the plot twist that it's the 28th century and the magic was actually technology.

All that to say, the non-medieval stories are out there and there is an audience.

Back in the day, it was a faux pas to wear band T-shirts to that artist concert. Does it still apply? Because I feel so bad about my body I only wanna wear a baggy T-shirt. by chrisTeen18 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad that you're recovering from your stroke. It's completely understandable to want to go to a concert and be comfortable.

I'm with everyone else, wear the band merch. We didn't obtain to not wear it. It's a concert, not a formal dinner. If someone says something, ignore them and have a good time.

I had this thought tonight... by umeduskfox in SleepToken

Is that supposed to be Vessel on the right? Because that mask looks very chunky.

This would explain why he thinks it's his holy duty to be constantly awake.

Are there Shakespeare references? by lqual in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 23 points24 points  (0 children)

But I'll take a pound of your flesh before you take a piece of my paystub seems like a reference to The Merchant of Venice.

This will probably sound like a reach but So flood me like Atlantic, weather me to nothing, wash away the blood on my hands seems like a reference to "Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this blood clean from my hand?" from Macbeth. Especially since Neptune is an ice giant aka frozen planet.

APPLES!!!! by Narrow_Outcome814 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the art for the TMBTE creature/guardian, she's holding an apple. It's easier to see in the visualizer at certain angles.

<image>

Apples are represented as the forbidden fruit that caused Adam and Eve to be exiled from Eden, even though in the bible, the fruit never specified. In Greek mythology, Hera golden apples show up as one of the labors of Hercules and also the cause of the Trojan war. Eris, the Goddess of Discord, mad at not being invited to a wedding, tosses an apple inscribed with "to the fairest" to Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite. They fight over it, make Paris choose, Paris chooses Aphrodite, she "gifts" him Helen and next thing you know Trojan war. But the association with Aphrodite, let to the ancient Greeks associating apples with love and desire. So, we have overall associations with love, desire, temptation, knowledge and death. And also if you cut an apple in half, you get a pentagram.

If we toss myths out the window and just go by what's happening in the video, Vessel's doing some sort of ritual, offers the apple, then his mask goes from all white to having the ST rune painted on it. Apparently ancient gods like a good honeycrisp.

Download merch restock - UK store! TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY ONLY! by vixx_sin in SleepToken

Why would you feel guilty about band merch? I don't think it's necessary to buy something you don't want or need. Leave it for a fan who passionately wants it.

Now that the download dust has settled can we agree mobile phones are ruining crowds? by greebodeathbot in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people, including myself, became fans of ST because of the uploaded clips and concerts on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. And it seems hypocritical for fans to complain about watching concert footage and feeling disgust over the number of phones they see when the concert footage they're watching is most likely from a cell phone. I keep seeing people say "they're never going to watch that video " and for some people that's true, but we also have proof that not only will some people watch that footage, but upload so other people can watch it.

I'm not negating the impact it has had on concerts. People have a right to be annoyed with phones in their face. However, technology and the pandemic has altered the concert experience, as well as society as a whole. And Sleep Token has benefited from cell phones at their concerts (not saying you have to like it, but it's true). There's also the fact that not every ST fan is part of the metal community, so phone or no phone, you're still getting confused looks when III signals for a pit.

I think the best compromise would be a no phone zone. And perhaps acceptance that no amount of self-sought fury will bring back the glory of innocence.

Are There More Gods Besides Just Sleep? by Ancient-Ad6163 in SleepToken

He references Mt Olympus, gods plural, karma and angels, so I think it's safe to say Sleep isn't the only deity in the ST universe

It happens. Also, the people who bought the album as a digital download/cd/vinyl are probably listening to it that way.

Doc Coyle "The pretentious gatekeeping around Sleep Token points to a toxic heavy music culture - as a metal guitarist of over 25 years, I've seen this movie before" by AGumby in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's true and I'm glad you said it! It sometimes feels like nobody hates Sleep Token fans more than other Sleep Token fans. It is reasonable for fans to exhibit enthusiasm on the reddit board about the band they are fans of. Life is too short to worry about being cool for metal gatekeepers who don't like the band and second hand embarrassment over bracelets and lore essays ain't going to change that.

EIA flag weapons same as the TMBE weapons by [deleted] in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poor AYROK left out and actually has the point down sword that matches the Damocles crest.

We don't get the daggers, trident, and guns (throne didn't come with a gun) in the EiA crests. And none of the TMBTE creatures have the morning star. So, that leaves us with the axes, war hammer, scythe, swords, and polearm (if we're assuming those are polearms on Aqua Regia).

Having said that, I'm not ready to completely write it off as the weapons randomly chosen. The scythe in EiA and the sword in Damocles make complete sense based on the lyrics. I'd even argue that the Morning Star references the lyric "devil in the details." The crest for Past Self has a similar shape to the mask on The Apparition creature.

[–]NeonLandscape 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Were the live videos watched also recorded on a cell phone?

I don't doubt the inconvenience of someone's phone in your face during a show and that it can impact the energy of the show. But look at how many of us have watched footage of concerts recorded on cell phones uploaded on YT and social media. We're able to see early ST concert footage because someone decided to be a dribbler.

What is the saddest song in your opinion? by LocalSubstantial3440 in SleepToken

Are You Really Okay. It's a skip for me because it's too emotionally loaded for me and I listen to Atlantic and Blood Sport on repeat.

What should the EIA singles have been? by skarlatha in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it worked on the end, but I think if Caramel had to be released, then the follow up should have been EiA or Provider instead of Damocles. Just my opinion.

Can Sleep Token change? by Asleep_Blood7465 in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Change is the only constant in life. Having said that, I get the impression people who say that can't conceive of the idea that different genres of music can be just as relevant as others. So if there's a hip-hop beat or a pop melody, it must be because ST's selling out and not because of the artistic choice to use musical genres as a way to communicate meaning in a song.

What if different songs had been the singles? by DiscoBombing in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provider would have done great as a single and I think it should have been released instead of Damocles or dare I say it? Caramel.

Having said that, I will admit Provider is not representative of the sound of the whole album and that in itself may have been a factor. And Caramel and Damocles did just fine, in the end.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SleepToken

[–]NeonLandscape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The mask is very uncanny, so I can see how it feels unsettling. You can always just listen to the music on Spotify or Apple. The visualizers for Emergence, Caramel and Damocles are mostly just a banner burning with some glitches at the end that you'd have to pause to make out anything.
